    Music Advising

All incoming music majors, minors, and participants are advised by the Director of Instrumental Music and the Director of Choral Music. Due to the complexity of the Music Field of Study degree and the needs of proper placement in any music ensemble or course for any student, there is a need to meet individually with any student wishing to enroll in any music course. Music advisors can then access student records, monitor class availability, and register students for appropriate courses in both the music major track, music core and academic core courses, and place them appropriately in performing music ensembles. The Field of Study degree in Music is unique in that music majors must be placed in the correct courses during their first semester in order to stay on track to complete the curriculum in 2 to 3 years. Misadvised music majors can potentially lose an entire year if placed on the incorrect level of music major requirements. Every effort is made to assess the level of musical competency during the initial advising session with the music advisor. This is a difficult task, even for seasoned music professionals, and cannot be accomplished by general advisors. Standardized testing and auditions are used for placement in Music Theory, Class Piano, Applied Private Lessons, and Performing Ensembles.
As each student moves through the music major curriculum, they meet with their advisor prior to pre-registration for the next semester. During this session, the faculty member assesses student progress in the current semester, addresses any problems, and plans the appropriate courses for the upcoming term. This in turn leads to seamless transfers to area four-year institutions and establishes a model that increases music department enrollments.
    Music Department Top Advising Goals:

    • Goal 1: Inform all Richland students, incoming and returning, about Richland Music Department opportunities.
    • Goal 2: Advise all declared and soon-to-be declared music majors of the proper sequence and pacing of music coursework for successful transfer.
    • Goal 3: Prevent students from being misinformed about collegiate music opportunities to enhance any degree experience and/or fulfill music degree requirements.
    • Goal 4: Complete “follow-through” advising with all music majors and minors throughout their work at Richland that sustains proper progress for student goal completion within degrees and skills.
    • Goal 5: Present students with the Richland Music Dept. experience as being the complete first 2 years of the 4-year Bachelor’s Degree in Music.
    • Goal 6: Teach students that the music degree is about developing skills over years within the course work and not about checking off courses on a list by simply completing them.

Interested Students sent to the Music Dept. for Advising

    • Procedure 1: All students declaring themselves to be music majors or interested in being music majors would be sent to the Music Department for all advising.
    • Procedure 2: Any student interested in any music course(s) would be sent to the Music Dept. for advising on that course, its co-requisites or pre-requisites, and its relationship to other companion courses.

Student Needs and Music Degree Issues

    • Music Core: Music Majors need to begin the standard Music Core sequence of courses along with the Academic Core sequence of courses in order to be on pace with any students starting out as freshman at 4-year universities. Defining the 5 areas of the Music Core for students is essential. (MUSIC THEORY, PIANO, APPLIED LESSONS, ENSEMBLES, RECITAL ATTENDANCE)
    • Skill Minimum: Music Majors need to complete a Music Degree Skill Minimum along with a DCCCD Music Degree Minimum, which are currently not equivalent.
    • Music Course Level Placement: Placing students in the proper levels of Music Theory, Piano, and Applied Lessons needs to be done through student testing and interviewing as the schedule is built.
    • Music Faculty Review of Standards: Richland Music Faculty are constantly reviewing and staying current with collegiate music standards for music courses and degree programs across the US to help advise students for successful transfers to 4-year colleges and universities.

Yet Richland's Derrick Logozzo boldly claims:
The Recording Arts and Music Technology Area at Richland College is an intensive program of study designed to teach the developing musician various technological and business skills that prepare transfer-track students for upper-level Bachelor’s Degree work.
Interested students also become prepared quickly to begin entry-level work in the music industry right after Associate’s Degree training at Richland. Using various software platforms in recording and audio engineering, developing press kits and websites, learning about music careers, and becoming a live sound engineer are all skills acquired in our program. Richland’s approach to Recording Arts involves a student becoming a solid musician first and using music technology in an artistic manner to provide the most career options in one’s future. Recording Arts courses are taken through the Continuing Education Music Industry Series which allows the Richland student musician to complete the Associate’s Degree in Music and these certificate-styled courses simultaneously without abbreviation to essential musical training.

The Richland Recording Arts Equipment Collection includes:

    • Solid State Logic AWS 924 Delta recording console
    • Full variety of recording microphones
    • Four Live Sound rigs
    • Recording Lab with 3 synthesizer workstations and full rhythm section instrumentation
    • Recording Arts Classroom with 16 workstations including Apple iMac Computers and Pro Tools software
More subterfuge and holding students hostage with nonsense.

Edited to add that for spring 2020 none of these classes are offered. ZERO!

    UNT music department
Can I graduate in four years? Yes, it can be done, but five years is much more typical. In order to graduate in four years, you will take nearly 18 hours every full semester, in addition to approximately four summer school sessions.
5 years folks. That means when the student transfers they will be exceeding credit hours at UNT with required recital each semester, an ensemble and more. Students may need to retake music theory if they don't test up to level. Extra MUAP to achieve the proficiency required and prepare for junior and senior recitals may be needed. More piano to meet proficiency may be required. The core courses may be different and require more hours. It goes on and on.

UTA's music education degrees are 134 hours plus recital hours and all that mentioned above. Those are 5 year degrees as well. So, it is imperative that students not take anything over the Guided Pathway and degree plans while at Richland.

As a music major at A&M-Commerce you’ll have many opportunities to participate in studio recitals and master classes with your studio professor and with nationally recognized guest musicians.
Richland is the only college in DCCCD of the 7 and possibly the only one in the state forcing students into a class that does not exist and is certainly not transferable. At every other college for all instruments there are masterclasses and renowned guest artist masterclasses as part of the instrument and voice studios.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Derrick Logozzo routinely holds his classes so late that the next classes have already started. The Richland Collegiate High School student that was placed in a mind blowing 30 credit hours was consistently late for their English class that was after Logozzo's Big Band Jazz Ensemble. Where is the oversight?

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

UT Austin out-of-state tuition is among the most expensive in the nation. Here's why. | The Daily Texan

UT’s out-of-state tuition is the 10th most expensive among large public schools in the nation, according to a recent analysis by HeyTutor.com of data from a 2017–2018 National Center for Education Statistics study on American tuition rates. Out-of-state students paid $36,744 per year, more than triple the amount their in-state peers paid on average....For UT to offer low in-state tuition prices, the 10 percent of out-of-state students have to bear the excess costs, Knight said.
The Richland Music Advisors putting students in excess hours that could place them in out of state tuition can have dire consequences.

Excess credit hour policies increase student debt
Excess credit hour policies assess a tuition surcharge for any credits taken beyond a predetermined threshold....
The researchers found that four years after states adopted excess credit policies, overall median student debt increased between 5.7 percent and 7.2 percent. And the impact of those policies on student debt was concentrated among low- and middle-income students.
The researchers realized that student debt could be increasing in these states because of an information gap between state policy makers and individual students....

“Students are only exposed to the policy when they’re close to the threshold, and at that point, it becomes too hard to make a substantive change to their degree program,” said Dennis Kramer, a professor of higher education at the University of Florida and the report’s co-author. “These policies also shift the cost burden from the states to the individual students.”
A typical bachelor’s degree program takes 120 credit hours to achieve, but of the states with excess credit policies the fee thresholds average 145 credits, and students may not learn about the policy until they get to around 130 credit hours, Kramer said.
“We do think there is an opportunity for these policies to become enhanced by robust advising and degree planning,” he said....But as more states move toward performance-funding policies and focusing on metrics and outcomes, they’re looking to use incentives as a carrot to get students to a degree...

And students are more aware of how many credits they need to achieve a degree if they’re keeping track of them semester to semester, Kramer said, adding that a student in their first or second year of college isn’t worried about having excess credits -- that comes when they’re close to that barrier.
“We’re not advocating for these policies to go away,” Kramer said. “We’re hoping for opportunities to enhance these policies. Most higher education scholars would agree providing incentives for students to complete their degree in a timely fashion is a good thing.”
    State Rules - Texas A&M University-Commerce
    Undergraduate Funding Limit Rules

This legislation is an attempt to offer a financial incentive to encourage students to complete degree programs in a timely manner. Students are then subject to penalty for excessive hours.
If you are a Texas resident and you enrolled in any Texas public institution of higher education BEFORE Fall 1999 you are exempt from the Undergraduate Funding Limit Rule.
If you are a Texas resident and you enrolled in any Texas public institution of higher education for the first time in Fall 1999 or later, the following provision applies to you:
Students affected by the 45 hour rule
Texas Education Code §54.014 provides that there is now a limit on the number of hours an undergraduate Texas resident may attempt while paying in-state tuition. Students who started Fall 1999 through Summer 2006 and attempt 45 or more semester credit hours beyond the hours required to complete their degree could be charged tuition not exceeding out-of-state tuition rates for these excess hours.
Students affected by the 30 hour rule
Students who started Fall 2006 and thereafter and attempt 30 or more semester credit hours beyond the hours required to complete their degree could be charged tuition not exceeding out-of-state tuition rates for these excess hours. Students who have not selected a major are considered, by state law, to have degree requirements of 120 hours.
Developmental courses are excluded from these rules.
For example: If your approved degree plan requires 120 semester credit hours, and you started your higher education between Fall 1999 and Summer 2006 then for every credit hour you attempt beyond 165 (120 + 45), you will be charged out-of-state tuition rates.
If you started your higher education Fall 2006 and thereafter, then for every credit hour you attempt beyond 150 (120 + 30), you will be charged out-of-state tuition rates.
    {Please note that all hours in which a student was enrolled at any Texas public institution of higher education, community college or 4-year public institution, are counted for the 45 or 30 hour cap whether or not the hours are accepted for transfer at Texas A&M University-Commerce.}
You may appeal this rule by filling out the 30/45 Hour Appeal Form
The Transfer Center and Advisors from the Advising Center understand Texas state law perfectly from my experience with them. They have all noted that they are bumping heads with the Music Advisors and all are questioning why students are taking all of those crazy credit hours they have been placed in by the Music Advisors. Students that go across campus to talk to folks outside of the music building get the shock of their lives. I have had students telling me that the Transfer Center people don't know what they are talking about. Not a mystery to me who is telling them that nonsense. Though numerous documents indicate students are to go so Career Services, explore colleges to transfer to and visit the Transfer Center as Freshman, the Music Advisors do not tell students any of that and do not send the students for the appropriate services. The Music Advisors keep insisting that they need to do all the advising and course placement for students. As we can see the results are disastrous!

Derrick Logozzo claimed in a recital class that the Guided Pathways was incorrect. That is a bold faced lie. The numbers of credit classes are perfect. The only change necessary is to spread the private lessons out evenly at 2credit hours per semester and not 1-3 in only the Sophomore year. Logozzo doesn't want his instrumental students to follow the Guided Pathway and take only 1 ensemble per semester for 4 semester and only 1 (2 credit hour private lesson) Muap per semester for 4 semesters. He wants them to fill numerous chairs that will put them way over credit hours and possibly in out of state tuition. The Music Advisors are dooming these students to possible mountains of student loan debt as well. Malfeasance in advising demands the advisors be removed!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Excessive Hours – Office of Records and Registration – The University of Texas at ArlingtonWhat is meant by Excessive Hours?

Texas Education Code § 54.014 specifies that resident undergraduate students who initially enrolled as an undergraduate student in an institution of higher education fall semester 1999 and later may be subject to a higher tuition rate for attempting excessive hours at any Texas public institution of higher education while classified as a resident student for tuition purposes.

    • Undergraduate students who enrolled initially in the fall 1999 semester or subsequent semesters cannot exceed more than 45 hours of the number of hours required for completion of the degree plan in which they are enrolled. Any hours beyond 45 are considered excessive and may result in additional tuition charges.
    • Undergraduate students who enrolled initially in the fall 2006 semester or subsequent semesters cannot exceed more than 30 hours of the number of hours required for completion of the degree plan in which they are enrolled. Any hours beyond 30 are considered excessive and may result in additional tuition charges.

    Purpose of Excessive Hours Policy

The purpose of these policies is to encourage students to complete their degree programs in an efficient, timely manner.

What counts toward the Excessive Hours Policy?

Courses that count towards the excessive hour calculation are those attempted at any Texas public institution of higher education. This includes:

    • Hours earned in courses in which a grade is earned on the transcript;
    • Courses dropped with a grade of “W”, “F”,”Q” or equivalent;
    • Hours excluded from the student record resulting from Academic Fresh Start;
    • Hours excluded through use of Grade Exclusion;
    • Hours replaced through use of Grade Replacement.

Degree plan hours include the total number of hours required for a student to complete his or her degree plan. If you are an intended or undeclared major, your degree plan hours default to a count of 120. Students with excessive hours are encouraged to contact their academic advisor to review their degree plan and insure that it is complete, accurate and to verify the hours required for completion.

You may apply for graduation; however, application for graduation does not preclude out-of-state tuition.

Exceptions to the Excessive Hours Policy

The semester credit hours counted toward the limitation include all hours attempted by the student except:

    • Semester credit hours earned by the student before receiving a baccalaureate degree that has been previously awarded.
    • Semester credit hours earned by the student by examination or under any other procedure by which credit is granted without registering for a course for which tuition is charged.
    • Credit for remedial education courses, technical courses, workforce education courses funded according to contact hours, or other courses that do not count toward a degree program at the institution.
    • Semester credit hours earned by the student at a private or an out-of-state institution.
    • Semester credit hours that are repeatable for credit.

    Requirement to update academic records

UT Arlington students who also enroll at other institutions of higher education have an obligation to ensure that UT Arlington has a complete and accurate academic record. Students who enroll in coursework at other institutions must transfer all records of that course work to UT Arlington’s Office of Admissions, Records and Registration at the conclusion of each semester.

    Recommended Action

We urge you to work with your academic advisor closely to determine the shortest path to completion of your degree. For a list of academic advisors: http://www.uta.edu/universitycollege/current/academic-planning/uac.

If you do not meet the admission requirements for your desired major or cannot graduate in a timely way from the degree program in which you are enrolled, we strongly recommend that you consider changing to a different major. UTA offers bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees within 12 academic units. For guidance in choosing a major that is a good fit for you based upon your interests and skills, please work with your academic advisor.

One of Derrick Logozzo's pet students, who is way over hours and could face out of state tuition when transferring, laughed it off and opined that they would just appeal it as if it was no big deal. Not so simple. Clearly these state universities that will get zero (as in no) state dollars for you are taking a stand. UTA is suggesting changing majors or applying for graduation knowing you will likely be paying out of state tuition. A & M Commerce allows only 1 appeal during the final graduating semester and the form asks for the extenuating circumstances that led to the excess hours. Other colleges also offer a last semester appeal for documented hardships. Many of these poor students find out from a letter in the mail after transferring. Not a happy surprise!

The Music Advising will be cleaned up on my watch. The Music Department needs to be admitting only candidates that are actually qualified. The department needs to put the students in college level theory and 1 lesson and 1 ensemble. The students need honest and thorough evaluation so that only those with the ability and work ethic to succeed in music go forward in the program. All music students need to see Career Services in their first semester to make sure they have chosen a degree path that is right for them. That should be followed by further advising with real advisors and an appointment with the transfer advisor. The transfer advisor can put them in touch with the admissions offices for the college(s) of their choice and get them paperwork so they can register for only classes that will transfer to the school(s) of their choice. It would be best if students had met with their school(s) of choice before ever coming to Richland, but that doesn't always happen so drastic action to get and keep them on track must happen in their first semester.

    Texas A & M University campus form:
    1Excessive Hours Appeal Form

The purpose of this form is to give students with extenuating circumstance the opportunity to appeal the excessive hours fee.

(REQUIRED)Current Contact Information Phone Number:Email Address:3Digital SignatureDateI certify the information provided above is true and correct. I am attaching supporting documentation detailing and documenting my unusual/extenuating circumstances. I understand the contents of this appeal and that the decision of the Appeals Committee is final. Once you click the submit button you will have an option to e-mail the form via several services, including your default e-mail program. Be sure to attach any supporting documentation before sending. If you have trouble submitting the form automatically, save the form to your computer and email it, along with any supporting documentation, to excesshours@tamucc.edu.
Whining that Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan put me in all those hours will not rescue the students from out of state tuition. These colleges are waiving out of state tuition for legitimate cause only. These rogue Music Advisors need to be removed immediately and students need to be under the care of real advisors and the Transfer Center so that they will be placed only in courses on real degree plans.

Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Major in Music Studies (Choral Concentration Teacher Certification in Music, Early Childhood Through Grade 12) | Texas State University

Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Major in Music Studies (Instrumental Concentration Teacher Certification in Music, Early Childhood Through Grade 12) | Texas State University

Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Major in Performance (Jazz Concentration) | Texas State University

Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Major in Performance (Instrumental Concentration) | Texas State University

Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Major in Performance (Vocal Concentration) | Texas State University

For transfer students, 31 semester credit hours in Music (or equivalents) may be transferred from a Texas public institution of higher education for the Music Field of Study and be applied to the Bachelor of Music degree with a major in Music Studies at Texas State University. More information about the Field of Study is available in the Academic Policies section of this catalog. The transferable Texas Common Course Number (TCCN) is listed below the Texas State University course number in the following course list.

    Code Title Hours
    MU 1315 Music Theory I 3
    TCCN: MUSI 1311
MU 1316 Music Theory II 3
    TCCN: MUSI 1312
MU 2315 Music Theory III 3
    TCCN: MUSI 2311
MU 2316 Music Theory IV 3
    TCCN: MUSI 2312
    MU 1115 Aural Skills I 1
    TCCN: MUSI 1116
MU 1116 Aural Skills II 1
    TCCN: MUSI 1117
MU 2115 Aural Skills III 1
    TCCN: MUSI 2116
MU 2116 Aural Skills IV 1
    TCCN: MUSI 2117
MU 2303 Survey of Music Literature 3
    TCCN: MUSI 1307
4 semester credit hours of Ensembles from the following: MUSE 3124, MUSE 3125, MUSE 3140 and MUSE 3141 4
TCCN: 4 hours from MUEN 11XX and 21XX
8 semester credit hours of Applied Study from the following: MUSP 1220 and MUSP 2220 8
    TCCN: 8 hours from MUAP 11XX, 12XX, 21XX and 22XX
    Total Hours 31
That constitutes exactly what is in the Guided Pathway at Richland. The new Music 1307 is now part of the core curriculum. So for the millionth time, anyone who is going to transfer to a 4 year state university should take what is on the Guided Pathway and no additional hours that clearly are never going to transfer.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

    2018-19 Collin College Catalog

    Please refer to
http://www.collin.edu/academics/programs/index.html for the most current information.

The Music field of study (FOS) provides approved courses for music majors who intend to transfer to a college or university and further their musical studies. The curriculum offers the required music theory, ear training, keyboard skills, music literature, private applied study and ensemble participation that all music majors must complete during their freshman and sophomore years. Upon completion of the field of study curriculum, a certificate will be awarded to acknowledge completion and readiness to transition from an associate level to a baccalaureate (BA/BS) level, at any Texas public institution. The college is also home to several ensembles and musical groups, allowing you to explore your abilities with other like-minded musicians in a comfortable setting. College facilities even provide a venue to share your talent with the world.

A Field of Study is a set of courses that will transfer and
apply to a corresponding bachelor’s -level degree at a Texas college or university. Both the Field of Study and the Core Curriculum courses are transferable for full academic credit to any public college or university in Texas. Students who complete the Field of Study block of courses will earn a certificate in that Field of Study. Did you know that you can also earn an AA or AS degree in addition to the Field of Study certificate?

    Certificate Music Field of Study
    31 credit hours

    2181 Piano Class III
    MUS I
    2182 PianoClass IV
Baccalaureate Music programs require piano proficiency
although the piano skills courses are not part of the guaranteed transfer block. Students are encouraged to take the keyboard competency courses in addition to completion of the Music Field of Study prior to transfer. Students may take a barrier exam to identify the need to take the courses

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Associate of Arts Degree Requirements
The following requirements must be met for an AA
    :1.Earn a minimum of 60 college-level credit hours.
2.Complete the General Education Core of 42 credit hours.
    3.
Earn a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
    4.
Earn a minimum of 18 credit hours at CollinCollege.
    5.
Complete a minimum of 18 additional credit hours of degree requirements and general studies electives.......

The certificate of completion for a specific FOS is awarded to guarantee transfer of the courses contained in the FOS curriculum freely among Texas public colleges. The FOS courses are statutorily required to be accepted as the first two years of program coursework in a related bachelor’s degree
So, an Associate's Degree, which in Collin County puts one at core complete plus the Field of Study in Music, is 70 hours plus any piano class needed for proficiency should one decide to take it. Of course, 66 hours is the most that a state university is likely to accept so that must be kept in mind. One may wish to cut out a few core classes if they are positive that they are going to transfer and complete their degree, but this is a very reasonable program. Collin College does not have rogue advisors placing students in excess hours from what I am told. I am sure a lot of Richland students are wishing they had driven a few miles further from home and taken classes at Collin College.

There is Eastfield College doing it right. The student takes 1 private lesson / MUAP (2 credit hours,) 1 co-requisite ensemble MUEN and recital. 4 semesters of this is guaranteed transferable as part of the field of study and will not put the student in out of state tuition. Until, recently, Richland's Music Department had no MUAP available in the summer. That was a good thing. Then students can do 4 regular semesters and use the summers for more core classes and transfer with an Associate's Degree with a field of study in music and no excess credit hours.

    NOTE: Pre-College Music Theory course.

Melissa Logan has apparently enrolled all (or virtually all) of her 31 top choir students in voice lessons. First this is a community college. Community members and credit students from high schools should be coming in just to sing in the choir. For recent high school graduates who are under the new state law and could face out of state tuition that are not music majors, there should very few taking private lessons and those who do should be carefully counting credit hours. The 4 year universities welcome students into their ensembles who are not music majors, but come from high school programs. Richland should have numerous choir members that are recent high school graduates and a number of older students that want to just make music. So, 31 Chambers Singers and 31 voice major students signed up for private lessons and the non-existent Voice Masterclass tells the whole story.

The Department of Music offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Music Education and Performance. As a music major at A&M-Commerce you’ll have many opportunities to participate in studio recitals and master classes with your studio professor and with nationally recognized guest musicians. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Chorale or University Singers. Placement in these ensembles is determined by auditions held at the beginning of each semester. Participation in these ensembles is also open to non-music majors by audition and we welcome students, regardless of major, to join us!......The Texas A & M University Commerce Pride Marching Band is the largest and most spirited student organization on the Texas A & M University Commerce campus and draws its membership from the entire student body, representing numerous states and most majors.
Dr. Crawford retired and Melissa Logan was hired to replace him. She has run off the community members in droves. There are virtually none left. The ones who invited me to return to my Richland choir have either passed away or left. I was at Richland for 5 years and sang in the top choir, filled in for the accompanist of the top choir and accompanied the pop choir as well. Logan kicked me out of my own choir twice when I tried to register and also kicked me out of opera workshop when I signed up as continuing education. I have tried to get voice lessons and am always wait listed and bumped out as she is still "advising," which translates into holding lessons for students that she is likely putting in lessons over hours they can transfer. Richland is supposed to be first come first served, so if returning students can't be bothered to register during priority registration, then they should lose their spots. All universities register those closest to graduation first, but holding spots past the early registration dates provided for returning students is totally unethical. I left Richland with a vocal scholarship and received my Bachelor's of Music from E.T.S.U. The Richland choral program has been totally decimated. When alumnae are not welcome and degreed professionals cannot sing in their own choir there are serious problems. Logan is now taking young people and placing them in numerous credit hours that will not transfer or count toward any degree and that may well place them in out of state tuition. Logan in addition to not following degree plans, is not sending students to Career Serivces or the Transfer Center. Many of her students do not have any degree plan chosen that will lead to gainful employment. She is wasting their in state college tuition hours on music without advising them of that fact. It is painfully clear that students are music education (voice concentration) or voice performance majors when that may be a poor choice of majors for them as they are not likely to be able to complete a four year degree in those disciplines.

Melissa Logan has also put gobs of students (likely her own choir kids) into Fundamentals of Theory again. That is not for music majors and will not transfer (more hours toward out of state tuition hell.)

Crawford said if there is one thing he has loved about being choral director, it’s the challenge of taking somebody from Point A to Point B – singers and musicians in general, especially at this level because this is such a diversity of backgrounds.

“If you would look at my chamber singers, which number about 40, you would see everybody from 18 years old to 70 years old, with a variety of backgrounds,” Crawford said. “I’ve taught on all levels—elementary school, high school, junior high, at a four-year college, and I’ve had a professional group.”
Sadly, Richland is not serving its transfer students, students in other majors or community members well with this disaster of a choral program. Please note how large and diverse the choirs were under Dr. Crawford, who welcomed all ages and backgrounds.

UT Tyler Registrar | Excessive Hours | Policies
Students wishing to file an appeal of excessive hours-related tuition increases due to extenuating circumstances may submit a fully-documented Application for Appeal for consideration by the Student Appeals Committee. If such an appeal is approved, a waiver of the tuition increases due to excessive hours will be placed on the student's account for a single semester. Students who wish to appeal these charges for multiple semesters must file an appeal each semester.

For students who have filed for graduation, an exemption to the payment of higher tuition for excessive hours in their graduating semester is available in the form of an automatically-approved Application for Appeal. While supporting documentation is not required, the student must formally request this exemption by submitting an Application for Appeal cover sheet and a typed letter noting they wish to claim this exemption. Because an active application or graduation must be confirmed before this exemption is processed, if a student submits this special appeal before applying for graduation, the appeal will be held without action until the Applying for Graduation process has been completed......

    Student Appeals

Submitting an Appeal to the Student Appeals Committee:
If an extraordinary situation other than grades adversely impacted your educational progress, you may submit an Application for Appeal form to have your appeal request considered by the Student Appeals Committee.

All appeals submitted for consideration by the Student Appeals Committee, unless specifically noted as meeting an exception or special circumstance outlined on the Application for Appeal form, must include each of the following:

    • A typed statement including the specific extenuating circumstance(s) leading to the appeal, and the specific outcome the student wishes the Committee to consider granting.
    • A current degree plan, signed by the student's academic advisor, with the expected graduation term noted.
    • Thorough documentation to support each extenuating circumstance noted in the typed statement.

Students should take the necessary time to document their appeals thoroughly before submission to the Enrollment Services Center (STE 230). As each appeal and the extenuating circumstances leading to them are unique, each student must arrive at their own decision about which documentation they feel best documents their claims and supports their appeal.
Appeals submitted without appropriate documentation (and those submitted with no documentation) may be subject to automatic denial, as noted on the Application for Appeal form.
Students will receive an email notification at their Patriots student email account regarding the outcome of their appeal after the Student Appeals Committee has reached its decision.
    http://www.sfasu.edu/controller/busi...ess_credit.asp
The State of Texas does not provide funds to state institutions of higher education for excess semester credit hours attempted by a resident undergraduate student. Since funding will not be provided by the state, and as permitted by state law, students who exceed the maximum semester credit hour limit of their program, based on the chart below, will be charged an additional $200 per semester credit hour.
    https://www.uta.edu/records/courses/...sive-hours.php
Students with excessive hours are encouraged to contact their academic advisor to review their degree plan and insure that it is complete, accurate and to verify the hours required for completion. You may apply for graduation; however, application for graduation does not preclude out-of-state tuition....
    Recommended Action

We urge you to work with your academic advisor closely to determine the shortest path to completion of your degree. For a list of academic advisors: http://www.uta.edu/universitycollege/current/academic-planning/uac.

If you do not meet the admission requirements for your desired major or cannot graduate in a timely way from the degree program in which you are enrolled, we strongly recommend that you consider changing to a different major.
    https://www.tamuk.edu/registrar/RGAD...ive-Hours.html
Yes. They are held to the limit for the degree plan in which they are enrolled; no exceptions are made for students who change majors....

No, financial aid does not cover excessive hour fee(s).

Meet with your academic advisor to carefully review your academic goals and current degree plan to determine if all future coursework planned is necessary toward your degree.
    http://catalog.uthscsa.edu/generalinformation/excesscredithourspolicy/UNIVERSITY PROCEDURE

    Students’ Responsibilities

    • Undergraduate students must submit all official transcripts from previously attended institutions as excess hours are not based on Health Science Center data but on statewide data.
    • To avoid being charged nonresident tuition, resident students must be aware of the number of credit hours required for their degree and avoid taking more than the maximum hours above the program requirement.
    • Students should seek advisement from their respective department so that they may be assisted in creating a plan for degree completion, considering the impact of previous coursework, current semester credit hours attempted, and total allowable semester credit hours for attainment of the degree.

Students are encouraged to use the table below to identify the maximum number of hours that they can take based on the hours required for their degree.

    Excess Credit Hours

Tuition Charged for Excess Credit Hours

The State of Texas will not provide funds to state institutions of higher education for excess semester credit hours earned by a resident student. Since funding will not be provided by the State, and as permitted by State law, TAMU will charge tuition at the non-resident rate to all students that exceed the semester credit hour limit of their program.

    $10,030 approx. annual resident tuition*

    $35,208 approx. annual non-resident tuition*

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Procedures and Policies - West Texas A&M University - Acalog ACMS™
    Excess Undergraduate Credit Hours Rule

The state of Texas will not provide funds to state institutions of higher education for excess semester credit hours earned by a resident student. Because funding will not be provided by the state, and as permitted by state law, West Texas A&M University will charge tuition at the non-resident rate to all students who exceed the semester credit hour limit for their program.....Students who have exceeded the allowable number of semester credit hours may receive a waiver of the non-resident rate if they are in their final semester, will graduate pending successful completion of their course work for that semester and there are extenuating circumstances that precluded their graduation within the allowable number of semester credit hours.
Tuition Fees and Deposits - University of Texas Permian Basin - Acalog ACMS™
    Thirty Credit Hour Limit Rule

Beginning the fall 2006 semester, first time freshmen, and entering freshmen thereafter, will be under the 30 Plus Hour Rule. The rule states that students who attempt more than 30 credit hours over their degree plan at Texas State funded institutions of higher education and have not yet earned a baccalaureate degree will be charged out-of-state tuition. Attempted hours include hours a student is registered for through the census class day. Any courses dropped prior to the census class day will not be considered attempted hours by the State. Students who have transcripted course work prior to the Fall of 2006 are grandfathered from the 30 Plus Hour Rule, but may be affected by the Forty-Five Credit Hour Limit Rule.
The following semester credit hours are not included in the calculation:

    • semester credit hours earned by the student 10 or more years before the date the student begins the new degree program under the Academic Fresh Start Program of the Texas Education Code, § 51.931;
    • hours earned by the student before receiving a baccalaureate degree that has previously been awarded to the student;
    • hours earned by the student by examination or similar method without registering for a course
    • hours from remedial and developmental courses, workforce education courses, or other courses that would not generate academic credit that could be applied to a degree at the institution if the course work is within the 27-hour limit at two-year colleges and the 18-hour limit at general academic institutions
    • hours earned by the student at a private institution or an out-of-state institution;
Excess Hours Beyond Degree Requirements The Texas Legislature established that universities will not receive funding for students entering higher education in Fall 1999 or later or who exceed 45 semester hours above the degree requirements. For students entering Fall 2006, this limit is 30 hours above the degree requirements. Effective Spring 2013, the Board of Regents has determined that MSU will assess an additional tuition charge of $150 per semester credit hour for excess semester credit hours in which students enroll above these limits. To avoid being charged extra tuition, students should be aware of the number of credit hours required for their degree programs and avoid taking excess hours. Numerous drops, withdrawals, and changes of degree programs can also affect this status.
Excessive Hours : Student Business Services
    : Texas State University

    Undergraduate Excessive Hours
Texas Education Code §54.014 specifies a maximum number of semester credit hours an undergraduate student may attempt while paying Texas resident tuition. Students who exceed the maximum hour limitations will be charged the non-resident tuition rate.
    6,643.58 vs. 14,239.58
Music students have long brayed about how they were not worried about excess hours and were sure they would be able to successfully appeal. DCCCD and Richland College should require their advisors to post publicly on the college's webpage the name(s) of the Texas state universities that will guarantee Richland music students in state tuition regardless of the number of hours they have attempted. Misleading students and placing them in peril of having to pay out of state tuition for a music degree is beyond reprehensible.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

A choir student of Melissa Logan responded to my information here on Twitter:

Richland College Music students registered for excess hours by Melissa Logan. Music students are not sent to the Transfer Center & academic advisors as they should be so they are not on degree plans and may face out of state tuition at 4 year college. https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richland-college-music-advising-derrick-logozzo-melissa-logan-out-state-tuition-nightmare-5481/ …

    Replying to @realscamdotcom

she’s the one with the degree not you so keep her name out of your mouth thanks
I was at Richland and left with a vocal scholarship to E.T.S.U. I graduated from there and have hours toward a Master's in Music and a second Master's in Russian history. I suggest you have your paying parents read the links I provided, and have them go with you to the Transfer Center at Richland. Ms. Kim Herman will get you the information you need in writing (i.e. on the Guided Pathway for Music to start with) and put you in direct contact with schools you are interested in transferring to so that you can take exactly what you need to transfer there. https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richland-college-music-advising-derrick-logozzo-melissa-logan-out-state-tuition-nightmare-5481/ … https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richland-college-music-advising-derrick-logozzo-melissa-logan-out-state-tuition-nightmare-5481/index5.html#post127619 …
    • my parents aren’t involved with my education so there is no need. I appreciate Ms Logan’s guidance and am here to stand by her decisions as they have helped me in the past. She knows what she is doing and is only helping me in my journey to transferring. Sorry it didn’t work out for you, but they are helping many other students.

    • I read them by the way, and am aware of all of that. We take proper precautions so I can transfer successfully.
Melissa Logan has no clue what she is doing as the posted records here clearly show. Logan doesn't need to be playing junior high school and mothering these adults. They need to see real advisors and go to the Transfer Center. Her babying them and registering them for excess hours that are not on any degree plan and not transferable, can run them out of financial aid at Richland and put them in out of state tuition at a 4 year Texas state University is not helping them.

How is this student going to graduate and secure a teaching position with such a poor command of the English language? Richland needs to bring in a new department head and choral director and clean up this horrific mess. The advising is inexcusable. And, the fact this mess was not handled back in November and it is now having to be discussed publicly to get appropriate action and make those in need of this information aware of it means the music department is going to be a hostile environment for those who are doing the right things and speaking out about issues that need to be addressed. The advising and other serious issues in this department have been ignored for way too long.

This student's comprehension is not good either. I graduated with a Music Degree and hours toward two master's degrees. I don't want my child or anyone else to have to pay out of state tuition or quit college due to not being able to pay their tuition because dishonest and incompetent advisors were using these students to fill Richland College Music chairs.

This following student was advised by both Melissa Logan and Derrick Logozzo. I suggest all of the students and parents follow how this student and all the other students who were advised do in the future. Where will they transfer to and will they be able graduate? What will they do when the bill for out of state tuition comes?

This is the student from the previous post valiantly defending Music Advisor and Choir Director, Melissa Logan.

Melissa Logan popped out of her office door a few months ago when advising another music student into disaster. She wanted to know what the easiest science class is. I answered rock jock science. Since Richland does not have near enough practice rooms, I was stuck out in the hall between classes. She was happy to hear that Geology was the answer. Logan is supposed to know the degree plans to the colleges her students are likely to transfer to. Advising is the most important job she has. She should never have had to ask. The question should be what science classes can the students choose from that are on the required core classes list(s) for the college(s) they are considering transferring to.

Students ideally would have appointments with a real academic advisor and the Transfer Center before they even start classes at Richland. If they haven't been to the Transfer Center Logan should send them there during their first semester of enrollment before they register for another semester. Melissa Logan asking college kids sitting in the hall for advice on what classes to register her students for would be hilarious if the consequences weren't things like losing financial aid, ending up having to pay out of state tuition or having to change majors.

Melissa Logan, as we can see from the records, is incompetent and should have been removed long ago. Note the caliber of students she auditions in and retains. I, as a degreed professional who came out of Richland with a vocal scholarship and completed my Bachelor's in Muics, am not welcome in my own choir nor have I been able to get a voice lesson for professional development. Logan has run off the community members and those needing professional development to cater to people who have no business majoring in music and are not going to represent the college well. How will this student ever transfer? What school district would hire this student as a teacher?

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

I earned my Bachelor's in Music from E.T.S.U., now known as Texas A & M Commerce. Notice the caliber of students in the program from music majors to other majors that just come in for choir. Commerce does not have the train wreck students that Richland is bringing into their program. The auditions there weed out those who do not have the background and training to succeed. The first semester of theory and stringent requirements for MUAP weed out more immediately. Junior barriers are looming from day 1 and everyone knows what is expected of them. Richland is just throwing warm bodies in chairs and stringing along music students that are not able to meet the standards of a real school of music and some who are clearly not attending class and doing the required work. The program is a complete mess.

    Texas A&M University-Commerce Vocal Division - Home | Facebook

Note that Fundamentals of Music is not offered at any real school like this. These students come in with a record of success and ready to work hard. They will start with Theory 1, 2 MUAP hours and 1 ensemble while they prove themselves. The top singers will audition for the Chamber Singers, opera and musical productions as they matriculate through the program. No Sophomores there will be drowning in over 100 hours of crap. Richland Music Advisors have destroyed the program and harmed so many trusting students.

This is more from the star student in Melissa Logan's choir. Too bad her crystal ball is broken. I still have a degree and hours toward two master's degrees and she is still struggling to pass for a junior high school student. Richland needs to do real auditions, interviews and placement testing before they put clowns into the music degree program who clearly will not do well. This student needs to be grateful she was dropped from her classes and go to Career Services and the Transfer Center and register for classes that will lead them to gainful employment. What a complete buffoon! More tax dollars at waste and another student that is wasting hours in a program that they will never succeed in as they already figured out they are "mediocre" at best.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

The US Department of Education has established a requirement that students receiving Federal Student Aid complete their degree within 150% of the time frame. Time frame is evaluated by the number of hours attempted. Students who are unable to graduate within the 150% time frame lose eligibility for financial aid when the hours needed to graduate and the hours attempted exceed the 150% limit.

For example, if your associate degree requires 60 semester hours to complete, you must be able graduate with no more than 90 credit hours attempted. If you have attempted 45 semester hours and have 25 hours remaining, the total hours needed to graduate are 70. You are no longer eligible for financial aid without an approved appeal.

Likewise, if you are pursuing a bachelor's degree that requires 120 semester hours to complete, you must be able graduate with no more than 180 credit hours attempted. If you have attempted 135 semester hours and have 50 hours remaining, the total hours needed to graduate are 185. You are no longer eligible for financial aid without an approved appeal.

In addition to the Appeal documents, you will also need an Academic Plan that outlines the courses required for graduation. You will need to strictly adhere to this plan to remain eligible for financial aid.
Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan have advised students well into out of state tuition territory and while wallowing in out of state tuition from hell they may also end up over the 150% maximum and have to pay out of state tuition with no financial aid left. Disastrous!!!!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

    16
TOTAL CREDIT HOURS REQUIRED FOR THIS AA DEGREE 60

Note: State universities are required to accept only 60 hours in transfer; therefore, it is strongly suggested that students check with their receiving university regarding the acceptance of any credit hours over the 60-credi-hour maximum. Students may have to make a choice between completing the Field of Study or the degree.
    Texas State Universities
    30 Hour Rule
First time undergraduate students enrolled in an institution of higher education fall 2006 and thereafter will be charged tuition at a higher rate if they exceed 30 semester credit hours over that required for a degree program. Courses dropped or withdrawn are counted as attempted hours and count towards the 30 and 45-hour rule.
    Financial Aid Maximum:
The US Department of Education has established a requirement that students receiving Federal Student Aid complete their degree within 150% of the time frame. Time frame is evaluated by the number of hours attempted.
BS. All music majors should begin in Music Theory 1. Fundamentals is not a college level course and is not on any music degree plan and cannot be transferred. With out of state tuition and financial aid limits, only those students who have the skill level of a Freshman music major should be admitted as a major period. Students should follow the Guided Pathway to the letter with the exception of spreading the 8 MUAP hours out evenly at 2 each semester for only 4 long semesters and by taking only 1 ensemble per each long semester as well. As only 66 hours will transfer that Guided Pathway (60 credit hours which mirrors the degree plan above) plus recital (4 credit hours) and piano classes are all that will transfer. Students should be practicing their principal instrument for a minimum of 3-4 hours a day and piano for proficiency for a minimum of an hour a day. Much more may be necessary to cover the scales, technical exercises, etudes and standard literature for the instrument to be ready to transfer. Some universities will ask for a list of repertoire. Students would be well advised to take some of the core classes in the summer so that they may have the necessary practice time during the long semesters. The administration claims that this following of the Guided Pathway / degree plan has been standard all along, but the representative samples of students coursework shows that the advisors have been intentionally placing students in dozens of hours over for the simple purpose of filling ensemble, private lesson and music class chair without informing students of the dire consequences.

Let's do a little music math. Degrees for Texas state universities may have credit hour requirements of 120-134 hours plus recital which is required but not on the degree plan. Students that transfer may have to repeat MUAP (private lessons) in order to pass junior barriers and /or prepare for junior and senior recitals. The degrees are based on four years of attendance, but most music major programs end up being 5 year programs which several colleges readily admit. That means extra MUEN, recital and MUAP hours in those additional semesters at the 4 year college. Some core classes from the Associate's degree (that transfers as a block) may not be what is required at the 4 year university and extra hours may accrue on that front. Many students fail or drop classes along the way. Some may need additional MUEN and specialized classes at the 4 year university to cover other areas of performance or teaching they wish to have. So, it is imperative that students not take extra hours at the community college. The music math is monstrously frightening. UNT degrees list at 128 hours.

UNT Music Degree 128 Credit Hour

30 Hour Rule = Out of state tuition at 158 credit hours.

Financial Aid limit = 192 credit hours

128-66= 62 (plus 3-4 recital credits 66) minimum to earn degree if not 1 extra hour is required.
Extra semesters with recital, MUEN and MUAP required, plus other hours of failures, withdrawals, core classes that don't meet the requirements and more hours taken for various reasons equals more and more hours tacked on to these totals.

A Richland student with 126 hours is only 32 hours from out of state tuition and 66 from losing financial aid. Students will transfer and could easily need another 70-80 hours or more.

A Richland student with 116 hours is only 42 hours from out of state tuition and 76 hours from losing financial aid.

The advising at Richland is so horrifically bad that students could end up in out of state tuition and have financial aid cut off for these excess hours Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan have placed students in.

    I posted typical student records:
https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127351 This student is at 121 hours and is 18 hours short of graduating. This student is going to attend for another full year and graduate with approximately 150 hours. That is 8 hours from out of state tuition and 42 hours from financial aid being cut off.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127352 This student has 136 hours and never graduated as they need 7 more core hours. This student is 22 hours from out of state tuition and 56 hours from losing financial aid.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127353 This student graduated with 126 hours. That is 32 hours from out of state tuition and just 66 hours from losing financial aid.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127355 This student has 91 hours, plus more MUAP this summer. They lack 19 hours of core classes after 3 years and thus will be pushing at least 130 hours at the end of this school year if they return to the den of the advisors from hell!

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127360 This student graduated with 128 hours. That is 30 hours from out of state tuition and just 64 from losing financial aid.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127365 This student has 90 hours and is taking summer MUAP. They are short 20 core hours so when they come back this year they will likely rack up enough hours to have 130 hours before they transfer.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127366 This student has 116 hours and is short 8 core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127368 This student has 66 hours. They need 8 more Music Theory hours and 23 core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127370 This student has floundered since 2014. They have 98 hours but cannot graduate because they still lack core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127372 This student has 86 hours. They never graduated as they still need 16 hours (two years) of music theory and 19 more core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127373 This student has 137 hours but never graduated as they are short 4 core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127374 This student has 100 hours. They are short 17 core hours after 5 years.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127378 This student has 110 hours and is 17 core hours short of a degree.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127379 This student has 93 hours. They are short 8 hours of music theory and 5 core hours. That theory means another year of classes. Derrick Logozzo put almost all of the music majors in that fundamentals of theory crap that won't transfer and is not for music majors just for the purpose of keeping these students trapped at Richland filling chairs and accruing hours that will cause them immeasurable harm later.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127380 This student left with 126 hours and still short 10 hours of core classes.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127382 This student has 114 hours and as most left with no degree as they were short 10 core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...81/#post127352 This student has 94 hours and no degree as they are lacking 14 core hours. More students taking 4 or more ensembles every semester as Derrick Logozzo personally registered them for those wasted hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127406 This students left with 139 hours and most likely an Associate's degree. They too were on Derrick Logozzo's take a gillion ensembles and lesson road to ruin.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127414 This student has 33 hours of music crap Derrick Logozzo threw them into and 0 / zero core hours. Ridiculous!

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127437 Welcome to the 129 hours Associate's Degree. Luckily other advisors put this student in core classes....

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127438 This student has 111 hours and is short 14 core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127440 This student has 127 hours and still needs core hours to graduate.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127442 This student has 87 hours and only 6 of those are core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127444 This student has 139 hours and still needs at least 4 core hours. Melissa Logan and Derrick Logozzo have advised them into total disaster!

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127448 This student has 71 hours. They need another year of theory (8 hours) and 16 core hours. They filled chairs in 4 ensembles a semester for Logozzo like armies of trusting students have been forced to do for years.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127448 This student has 103 hours and still needs a year of music theory and 8 core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127448 This student has a whopping 140 hours and hopefully passed everything needed to walk.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127451 This student has 127 hours and an Associate's.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127451 Melissa Logan drowned this poor girl in 161 hours. She is already in out of state tuition and in 31 hours can kiss financial aid goodbye!

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127454 This student graduated with a whopping 121 hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127456 This student has 84 hours, plus more MUAP this summer and 11 core hours remaining.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127457 This student has 99 hours and still needs 11 core hours and another year of music theory. Piles of garbage music lessons and classes that cannot transfer thanks to Derrick Logozzo.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127458 This student has a whopping 122 hours with another year of theory and possibly more core hours reminaing. Melissa Logan just keeps throwing him in choir seats and Muap that he will never beable to transfer.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127459 This student has a 114 hour degree.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127460 This student has 83 hours and is short 8 music theory hours and 14 core hours. They were just another chair warmer for Derrick Logozzo.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127461 This student has 93 hours. 45 are MUAP of which only 8 will transfer and they still need 26 core hours. Derrick Logozzo's advising is criminal!

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127462 This student has 122 hours and still needs 6 core hours to graduate. A fifth year at a 2 year college for a full-time student???

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127463 This student has 136 hours of chair warming for Derrick Logozzo and can't graduate as they need another core class. Insanity!

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127465 This student has 37 hours and only 3 core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127465 This student has 51 hours and still needs 16 hours of music theory and 26 hours of core classes to earn their 60 hours Associate's degree. Melissa Logan will spend the next two years provided they last that long drowning this student in garbage that will never transfer. Welcome to out of state tuition and kissing financial aid goodbye!

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127467 Meet Derrick Logozzo's professional chair warmer!

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127476 This student has 93 hours. They left because of Derrick Logozzo totally misleading them. They thought they were about to graduate, but in reality Logozzo had put them in a few developmental classes but no actual core classes. They had no idea they needed 32 core hours plus another year of music theory. So, they are at least 40 hours short of a degree and have given up due to the dishonest advising and use of students to fill seats in music classes.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127477 This student has 91 hours and the craziest list of dozens of hours that will never transfer thanks to Derrick Logozzo. They need more core hours to graduate.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127478 Typical Freshman railroaded by Melissa Logan into gobs of classes that will never transfer.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127483 Typical Freshman railroaded by Derrick Logozzo into gobs of classes that will never transfer. Not anywhere even close to the Degree plan with 1 MUEN (ensemble) and 1 2 credit hour MUAP (private lesson.)

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127481 This student is the usual multiple semesters and 4 ensembles a semester Logozzo student with 109 hours and apparently short 1 credit of core classes from receving an Associate's Degree.

    https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127482 More Logozzo chair filling.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127483 And, yet more chair filling road to disaster Logozzo student.

    https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127484

    https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127485 Student with a 114 hour degree.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127485 This student has a 120 hour degree.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127489 This student has 41 hours and two more years of music theory. Despite me sounding the alarm on excess hours in November of 2018 Logozzo has continued to put students in 4 ensembles every semester and mountains of private lessons (MUAP) in multiple instruments that will not transfer.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127492 This student bailed the music Titanic.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127493 This student has 58 hours and still has a year of music theory and 21 core hours to go. Melissa Logan is drowning them in hours that will not transfer.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127494 This student has a hodge podge of hours in different disciplines. What degree plan does Melissa Logan think all of that mess is on???

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127495 This student has 62 hours and still needs a year of music theory and 22 core hours. Melissa Logan is using this student to fill 4 ensemble chairs each semester for her and loading them down with mountains more pure crap that will not transfer. Yet another student that will get advised into spending 4 years at a 2 year college and tricked into taking mountains of garbage to fill the advisor's own classes.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127496 This student has amassed 76 hours in two years thanks entirely to Derrick Logozzo. They were registered for 4 ensembles through this spring as well long after is was made known that was a serious issue. They still need a year of music theory and a whopping 22 core hours.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127497 These are more examples of Melissa Logan's destroying students academic careers with her advising.

    https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127498

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127504These are more examples of Derrick Logozzo's 4 ensembles a semester and more piles of crap that won't transfer victims.

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127499 This student may be one of Logozzo's high school students. 30 hours in the spring semester????

https://realscam.com/f16/dcccd-richl...tml#post127508 These students have hours out the wazzoo and both advisors going berserk on them.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Gross incompetence and malfeasance in action. Melissa Logan in her paperwork available today claims that Fundamentals of Theory, F1 and F2 are part of the music core. This faculty member has kept her students there an extra (third year or more) at the two year college by handing them documents on paper in writing that they need to complete Theory Fundamentals F1 and F2 to complete their music core. She is supposed to know the Richland Associate's degree plan and Guided Pathway for music. Fundamentals is not on either of those. No university has Fundamentals of Theory on its degree plan as it is not for music majors.

Logan has also been sticking students in Opera Workshop in droves when that is not on Richland's 60 hour Associate's Degree or Guided Pathway. Most universities will require their Choral Education majors to take only 7 ensembles total for their Bachleor's degree of which only 4 can be transferred in and most of those ensembles will be large choral ensembles.

Diction is useful and required at the university level, but it should only be taken if the school the student is transferring to requires it be taken to enter their program as it is over the 60 hours on the degree plan at Richland. Piano Proficiency is required of all music majors, but it is not in the block that will transfer and should only be taken for credit in consultation with the university the student is transferring to. Some only show 1 or 2 piano credits on their degree plans, but a student will be forced to take piano until proficiency is proven or piano proficiency exams are passed. As piano proficiency is required for all degrees and absolutely essential for choir and voice teachers to be able to accompany all their students when needed, all singers should be practicing piano a bare minimum of 1 hour a day so that they become skilled players that can play anything needed.

Voice Masterclass is not a supposed to be a separate class. That credit class that doesn't exist on any degree plan puts students further into out of state tuition. Masterclasses are supposed to be part of the voice studio. Melissa Logan should not be requiring students to take it. Music Literature 1 and 2 are also no on the Richland Degree plan. Music Lit 1307 is the course that is to be taken by music majors as a part of their core requirements. More hours that are not transferrable that students are forced into by this totally incompetent advisor.

The Associate's Degree should be earned as it will transfer as a block to any Texas state university. Anything over 60-66 hours will not transfer. About all Logan has managed to do is advise her students into out of state tuition. All the adjuncts are painfully aware how little their students practice and how poor attendance is in the classes as the students are drowning in garbage classes Logan has put them in. Logan is also supposed to be "constantly reviewing and staying current with collegiate music standards for music courses and degree programs across the US to help advise students for successful transfers to 4-year colleges and universities." She needs to be fired immediately for such incompetence.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

One of Melissa Logan's students tweeeted:
Jul 21Music is the top 20 of hardest courses and isn’t no where to be found in highest paying LOL what am I doing
Exactly! If the music advisors were competent they would be sending students to Career Services to get the students set up to do coursework that would lead to a real paying job so that they can eat when the parental units stop throwing money at them. Students could then consider numerous vocational and certificate programs that pay well and will lead to real careers. Then the students that had a future job in mind that required a degree would be in the Transfer Center and seriously pursuing something viable and following a degree plan to the letter to do it. Richland has armies of students taking piles of hours that will not transfer and not give them any marketable job skills while their parents who are kept in the dark think that they are really pursuing a college education.

Logan student retweeted the following as they like many other choir students spend their days posting pure garbage on social media as they don't appear to be serious about anything.
not to suck my own dick but all my friends are fuckin pretty

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

    Transcript

Music at Richland College... equals excellence. Richland College is a great place to learn and perform with the best. We are the first two years, of a four-year music degree experience, and we have a place for everyone in our music department. Music majors, music minors, as well as students who just want to learn and perform.
    (Xylophone music playing)
Richland is supposed to be the first two years, but Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan routinely stick students in Fundamentals of Music Theory, which is not on any music degree plan and adds an extra full year to their time at Richland. Freshman and Sophomores take Music Theory 1-4 and the accompanying ear training everywhere else on the planet as Fundamentals won't transfer and rockets the students toward out of state tuition as it is 6 wasted credit hours. Students at real music schools don't end up with more than 100 hours in their first two years nor do they take dozens of hours that are not on their degree plans as they don't want to pay out of state tuition at their 4 year Texas state university. Richland is a disastrous start for anyone that needs to transfer and finish a degree. For folks like me that started at Richland, left with a vocal scholarship and then completed a music degree it is no better. I got kicked out of my own choir there. Older students and community members have disappeared from the choir with the new director Melissa Logan running the program right into the ground.
Richland College is centrally located near world-class performance venues, in central Dallas, Texas, such as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Opera, Dallas Wind Symphony, and Fair Park Music Hall.
There are approximately 20,000 students enrolled at Richland, through a series of on-campus, as well as distance learning courses, in virtually every academic discipline, making Richland one of the largest two-year colleges in the U.S.
For more than 30 years, Richland College, of the Dallas County Community College District, has focused on teaching, learning, and community building, on its 243-acre campus. Students at Richland are internationally and ethnically diverse, speaking more than 90 first languages.
    (Woodwind and brass music playing)
The music majors are held hostage with mountains of credit hours that will never transfer and put in danger of out of state tuition and losing financial aid to keep the music department chairs filled.
As a two-year college, Richland offers the Associate Degree in Music, which we view as affordable quality... as we like to say, "low tuition for high-quality experience." The Richland Music Department has high transfer ability to most any public or private university.
Richland isn't affordable when it is putting students in dozens of hours that won't transfer and puts the student in out of state tuition or losing financial aid when they transfer due to exceeding the 150% maximum. The records show that armies of students come through and many accrue well over 100 credit hours, but as Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan don't follow the degree plan and put students in few core classes, they don't graduate with the 60 hours Associates Degree as they haven't even got anywhere near the 32 core class hours to get that Associate's in Music.

Recent music graduates have attended Berkeley, UNT, SMU, and Juilliard, as transfer students.
Recent graduates are also conductors, educators, performers, and retailers in all areas of the music field. Richland College has established these successes through many connections over the years, with various music professionals and university professors, nationwide.
The success stories are few and far between. That is obvious from the records posted here.
The Richland College Music Department has very unique course offerings, such as, Digital Music Composition, Jazz Improvisation, Music Technology courses, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Fusion Percussion Ensemble, as well as Steel Band.
Richland also has six levels of music theory -- from developmental -- to advanced.
That Fundamentals of Theory is great for community members, but no music major or potential music major should ever have been placed in that class this is not on any music degree plan.

Jazz Improvisation needs make as it is advertised and students come in expecting to get that course.

Richland is the only college in DCCCD with a Steel Band I believe, but only 1 member was someone outside of the Richland Music Department, so it needs to be promoted much better by the district.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble isn't taught by a jazz person and there are no voice instructors that specialize in jazz and pop.

Music Technology Courses are offered at Cedar Valley. Richland only has 2 of the numerous courses offered and cannot award any certificate or enough training for anyone to seek employment in that field and this fraudulent promotion of a program that doesn't exist at Richland and Derrick Logozzo luring in students wanting to pursue that needs to stop! You can enjoy smaller classes in many areas that affords the individual student more personalized attention, to development and various needs.
The jazz combos have a capacity of 15 when that should be limited to around 8 and make with 4 students as those should be trios, quartets and quintets etc. The chamber strings, brass, woodwinds and other groups are way too large as well. They should be capped at 10 and make with 5 enrolled as they are promoted offerings.
The Richland College Music Department is a very balanced department, with equally strong areas in instrumental and vocal music, as well as music theory & literature, and methods courses. Richland also provides music education and conducting course components, that prepare students wishing to specialize in those musical fields -- at four-year institutions.
There are no conducting classes and never should be as only 66 hours will transfer and those are junior level or higher courses.
Students study and perform in over 17 different ensembles, in all areas of music: symphonic, commercial, jazz, pop, world, and choral. Richland has strong symphonic ensembles, not usually found at two-year institutions, nationwide, such as wind symphony, chamber singers, and string orchestra.
Richland has only been able to have so many ensembles because Derrick Logozzo routinely puts students in 4 ensembles each for multiple semesters when only 4 total will transfer to a 4 year university. The program is going to have to be carefully evaluated and restructured to ensure students no longer accrue excess hours and that there are adequate practice rooms and facilities to properly support such a program.
The Richland Music Department also provides a great chamber music experience, with chamber strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, and piano groups that focus on specialized literature, particularly without the use of a conductor. Richland provides consistent quality performing opportunities in our daytime recital concert series, as well as our evening concert series, occurring each semester.
There are no piano ensembles. There is no small choir doing challenging music. If Richland wants to attract students to participate in these groups, then real changes are going to have to be made.

Our music department has over 500 enrollments in music... in over 100 different music courses, each semester, with all-state and professional-level students, as well as students interested in all areas of the music field.
500 music students plus armies of adjuncts can't share 11 general practice rooms and the 4 percussion practice rooms.
Richland College has spacious facilities and a newly renovated performance hall, with state-of-the-art technology in lighting and recording. We have a technology lab, recording lab, and a piano lab, with the latest technology in ear training software, notation software, and Pro Tools software.
Richland has only 11 general practice rooms for armies of adjuncts and students to share. There are only two large ensemble halls with 18 ensembles. Richland needs to make dozens more practice rooms available and other changes to make this program what has been promised.
Richland's intermedia group fosters unique collaborations, between music students and projects in the theater and video game departments.
How much collaboration has there really been???
Our students get hands-on experience, recording live musicians, on stage, in our hall. From the set up, through the session and mix, to the final master, the students control the project.
Only 1 audio class is available out of a whole long course sequence. Anyone wanting to pursue that kind of work needs to go to Cedar Valley!
(Choir singing) Richland has a music scholarship program that awards ensemble participation scholarships, as well as awards for music majors that can cover from ten to fifty percent of one's tuition for a semester. Richland is usually less than one-quarter of the cost per semester, or year, than the cost for most four-year colleges, and saves students a tremendous amount of funds for their future schooling.
Students who end up with gobs of excess hours and give up after 3 or 4 years and don't finish an Associate's Degree or transfer haven't saved any money. Students that end up in out of state tuition at a 4 year State university are not saving any money as financial aid will not cover that. Some are so overloaded with hours that they may lose financial aid at the 4 year state university due to exceeding the 150% maximum.

(Jazz music playing with piano, percussion, bass, and guitar)
Richland College has four full-time faculty -- two of which are administrators, and over 20 adjunct professors, who are well-known performers, clinicians, and authors in various fields of music.
The adjuncts absolutely are the finest in the country. The problems in the department are the department head and choral director as the documents and student records posted here clearly demonstrate.
Throughout the years, we have developed a very effective parallel to the university experience, with more breaths, since we send our students all over the U.S. and even Europe. Most of us have taught in both, universities, and community colleges, so we realize the effectiveness of continuity and preparation for upper-level studies.
We have an outstanding program in every area, from music theory, to technology, with an exceptional faculty support for all studies. It is our intent that each student will have an indelible experience that will go with them through the remainder of their college education.
    (Jazz choir singing)
Richland music advisors do not put students in classes that Freshman and Sophomores at real schools would take. The advisors load the students with dozens of hours that are not on any degree plan, won't transfer and may put them in out of state tuition and exhaust their financial aid. The department head and choral director need to go!
The Richland Music Department provides advising and registration for music majors, minors, and any student enrolling in a music class, within the Music Department. This provides the most accurate guidance for the music students, regarding their courses, and of course their careers.
(Percussion jazz band playing music, with a bass player)
Richland College Administration wrote on July 11th:
Music faculty will not register students for music or core classes. Guided Pathway advisors will be available for students to be advised for core classes prior to enrolling in music classes. Students and Guided Pathway advisors will register students for music and core classes.
And, for the record almost all the students that come in to take a music class end up becoming music majors. Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan are not talking career opportunites and how these students are going to eat, but just piling them with music classes and cheering them on with no thought to the welfare of the students in question. Piano proficiency is required of all music majors and is a tremendous commitment. Students must attain a very high level of expertise on their principal instruments which requires 3 hours minimum a day of practice and a very strong background coming in. These students should be in Career Services and the Transfer Center getting information from colleges they are considering before they ever register for a single music class so that they know what they are getting into before Logozzo and Logan sign them up for piles of music classes that may lead absolutely nowhere.
Richland College provides special events for student advancement, beyond the regular curriculum, with national and regional clinicians, commissioning of new works, music festivals and competitions, run by our students to learn leadership, as well as guest performers and conductors being featured in concerts with our students.
An example of this, is our Carnival of Steel, with guest-artists: Annie Nirelle, David Rudder, and Ray Holman. Richland also provides opportunities to music students in performing groups -- to travel nationally and internationally -- to perform in major concert and clinic events. Examples would include the Texas Music Educators Convention in San Antonio, as well as the Carnival Cruise lines in Cozumel, Mexico.
    (Music playing out)
We invite you, as students, parents, and directors, to become a part of the Richland College Music experience -- one of excellence that leads to the four-year degree. Come to Richland: learn and perform.
I came back to Richland with a music degree and got kicked out of my own choir. I see only a handful of students make it out and transferring to 4 year universities even thought the department boasts 500 students. It is time for serious evaluation of the department and positive well thought out changes to the program!
