Since these type of attacks are not going to go away and will increase, here's a word of advice to everyone:
Upgrade your malwarebytes to their best service. You need it running in the background 24/7 and it will protect you from the wannacry type of attacks. You also need to do the same thing with your virus protection software. The free versions are not going to cut it anymore. The paid versions will also stop the over 50,000 forms of the FBI virus ransom ware which totally locks up your computer. You either have to take your computer in and have it removed professionally, a computer techie come to your home to remove it, but never, ever pay the ransom. The good news is they don't encrypt your data so erasing the virus gets your system back. Otherwise you would need to buy a new computer.
This probably goes without saying to most of you, but if you use an external hard drive to backup your system, do not leave it connected to your computer. If you do, it too will be infected.
While your personal computer is not a target, you can still get it by visiting sites that have been infected. Three of our people had their software warning bells go off from several sites they visited. They contacted and warned the site owners they were infected. They had no clue they were infected as their anti-virus software had not caught it and it had not released itself yet on their system. Luckily they were able to get it off before being a victim and having to pay a ransom.
While this first wave was rather crude, as not all computers were infected immediately as some were set to be infected at a later date and time, you can bet the newer attacks won't make that mistake.

All the A/V and anti-malware in the world won't help if you do not keep your software up to date.
This Wannacry is a perfect example of this. Microsoft released a patch for the exploit Wannacry used back on 14MAR, almost two months before the outbreak; https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/.../ms17-010.aspx.
This patch was included in the automatic updates that windows routinely does, unless you've disabled that function, or if your IT department wasn't on the ball. Windows 7 users were the hardest hit by this. The patch stops Wannacry (and UIWIX) from affecting your system regardless of any A/V or anti-malware you have installed.
And in regards to Microsoft's Windows automatic updates and other updates.
Don't do something stupid like setting the updates to take place between 1am-4am and then turn your computer off every night at 11pm. Your computer will never update unless it is actually turned on during the times specified.
And, NO you will not need to go out and buy a new computer. This doesn't effect the hardware in your computer at all. A simple clean re-installation of Windows will fix it right off the bat, even if your data is encrypted. You will of course lose any data if you do this. Besides, the original wanncry is rated as a low risk problem and there are already many removal tools and instructions out there like this one from symantec.com.

See MS update dated 22MAY2017 below (Note for Windows XP users) , Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool(MSRT) will now remove this.
Also, in reference too NAS and other backup systems. You don't need to unplug them. These systems being effected or not depends on your back-up schedule. Assuming that you bought a half way decent back-up unit and not just an external drive which is meant to be used for extra storage space and not really for back-ups anyway. Any real-time or daily back-ups would of course be affected. Any weekly back-ups would only be effected if you had them set up to run over the weekend. Most people do this and that is why these things generally get released on a Thur. or Fri. Recommend you set the weekly back-up to run on Tue. Monthly and manual back-ups would of course depend on when you run the back-up program. And, as above make sure to leave your computer on during the time the back-up software is set to run. :RpS_smile:
Note that if you get a encrypted version of this, or any other ransomware, you may not be able to recover your data at all. That depends mainly on the type of encryption that is used.
