About a year ago it looked like the US DOJ was going to step up on prosecuting scammers. What are your thoughts? Have they done so? It looks like they have went after scams like Profitable Sunrise and others. Is this more than average or the same?
Are we doing enough as scambusters to let them know about online scams?
What more can we do? I'm asking to gain some thoughts that could help our cause.
Thanks!
There has been a small but noticeable difference in the way the authorities have been dealing with online fraud since the inception of theFinancial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, not so much in the volume, but in the investigation and eventual prosecution of offenders and, most obviously, in the penalties delivered.
Unfortunately, the reality is, while the rate of internet crime is growing, the relevant US agencies are having their budgets cut and manpower re-directed, particularly since the inception of the so called war on terror and renewed focus on internal security since 9/11.
IM(very)HO, it will take a change in focus and an act of political will for things to change, which seems unlikely in the current political climate, where rhetoric seems to trump action.
