Upon further review, this looks like a fairly old scam making its re-debut. Not sure if this is the same "Patrick Harris" promoting it.

Doogie Houser? I think he is on Broadway these days, see if Patrick Shaw works.

By can you make it for lunch I mean are you available for a lunch where I draw a bunch of scribbles on a napkin telling you how much money you can make if you can get six of you friends to come to the same greasy lunch next week. Of course each of them needs to get six and so on. The part of the video where he offers to pick up part of the cost of lunches for his associates is an interesting tell of the kind of money they are probably not making.

    Do I need pre-paid legal?

    Dear Dave,

Do you have an opinion on whether or not pre-paid legal is a product worth purchasing?

    – Anika

    Dear Anika,

I’m not mad about pre-paid legal. But a lot of folks who recommend and advocate it don’t like me very much, because I tell people it’s a bad idea. Here’s why: Pre-paid legal will cost you about $300 a year. If you take $300 a year, and multiply that out over 10 years, you’re looking at $3,000. The truth is that the average American consumer doesn’t spend $3,000 on legal bills in this amount of time.

Lots of people will tell you that you miss out on tons of opportunities by not having a lawyer ready to jump into things. That’s a bunch of garbage! Once in a great while you may need the services of an attorney, but think about this: If the average person spent $3,000 or more over the course of 10 years on legal bills, while pre-paid legal took $3,000 from each of these people, pre-paid legal would go broke, wouldn’t it? They’d be handing out more in legal services than they receive in fees!

On average, you’ll come out better if you self-insure by having a good emergency fund in place. That way, you’ll have the money to pay for legal services should the need arise. And part of the reason you’ll have the money in place is because you didn’t give it to someone else—like pre-paid legal!

    – Dave

OZ always has some good stuff.

It is noted that the company currently does not provide a publicly viewable compensation plan on the Legal Shield website. As far as MLM companies go this is a huge red flag as a compensation plan is a pretty big deciding factor when considering a MLM opportunity.

Why did Prepaid Legal become Legal Shield?

Thanks, Ribshaw. I meant "Patrick Shaw." It's that early onset dementia striking again. The "lunch video" is awesome. So I can invite 10 people and he'll pick up HALF THE TAB!??? I'm in!

As an "opportunity" I would take a pass. But did want to add one item based on the last comment of Prepaid Legal - Legal insurance that sells itself?

I'll let Consumer Reports explain why this might not be the protection that it seems.

There's also a major built-in "gotcha" that will "getcha" if you need serious legal services, Consumer Reports Money Adviser warns. After four years, Facinelli's contract has built up what seems to be a generous 240 hours of civil trial defense representation. But he gets only 4.5 hours for pre-trial work, with the rest reserved for once the case goes to court. Problem is, an estimated 97 percent of civil cases never go to trial, according to a 2006 study published in The Journal of the American Judges Association.

NOLO has a pretty good book and software for basic wills which I have used. I use an attorney for some more complicated stuff, but that would be an add on with any Legal Shield type product.

Two articles on Umbrella Policies which can be added on top of Auto/Home coverage to protect against lawsuits. Someone concerned about being sued in my opinion should consult with a licensed professional.
