My ideal match is a woman who is comfortable with herself. Someone who believes in herself and someone who sees the beauty in life. My ideal match should want to be friends first. She should be sensitive, caring and loving. This sounds like a shopping list.. I guess my ideal match should just be a woman looking for a man looking for love.

Re: Sweetheart Scammer or did this really hot person pick me above all others?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Dorothy McDuffie didn’t want to tell anyone.

“My family knew something was wrong with me because I was acting so different. I wouldn't let them in to help me. I thought I could take care of myself,” she said.

But McDuffie soon realized she couldn't.

This 64-year-old grandmother and retired flight attendant from Jacksonville was alone. Her husband died a year earlier.

So like a lot of singles, she turned to the Internet for companionship but got swept up in a con instead.

“I thought I was mature enough and smart enough and not so naive to fall for something like that,” said McDuffie.

Older Americans are falling hard and fast.

Last year, according to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, women 50 and older were by far the biggest victims of online romance scams. They accounted for 61 percent of online financial losses that totaled nearly $60 million.

It’s something the Florida Department of Elder Affairs works hard to make seniors aware of.

“For every one we hear about; for every one that's reported to us; there are 24 that we don't know about that don't get reported,” said Department Secretary Charles Corley.

Corley said his department tries to educate mothers and fathers.

People are living longer and often have a little money stashed away. He recommends young adults talk with their parents about these romance scams.

“Absolutely, the other end of the spectrum of what you're describing is what doesn't happen nearly frequently enough. And that's those conversations to beware of this,” said Corley.

    McDuffie is sounding the alarm.

She was taken by a fake Romeo she met on the dating website Match.com.

The person behind the fake account said he was in the military and loved her.

    Soon they were emailing non-stop.

He got stuck in a foreign land and needed money to get out.

First, she sent several hundred dollars and then more and more. It was one money problem after another.

“Hoping and wishing that I finally found somebody that was willing to take care of me and wanted to take care of me and like me for who I was instead of me helping everybody else out,” McDuffie shared.

But instead of him taking care of her, it was McDuffie who got taken. When all was said and done, she was out more than $15,000.

Representatives from Match.com tell Action News they take steps to protect clients from falling victim to scam artists.

They have warnings posted on their website, and on every message sent or received.

Even with the warnings, they admit some scam artists do find ways to trick people.

A Match.com spokesperson said in those instances, the website quickly acts to block a false account. They also work with law enforcement to track down the scam artist.

“I wasn't mom. I wasn't grandma. I was sheltering myself from everybody. I didn't want anybody to know what happened,” McDuffie said.

If you feel that you or a loved one has been the victim of an online scam, contact your local police department.

Re: Sweetheart Scammer or did this really hot person pick me above all others?

The way this victim felt seems very typical, where people start giving money and then feel like they are committed to keep giving if they are to get their money back. Of course this is part of what a skilled conman does.

SAN DIEGO - A former San Diego man accused of wooing women only to steal their money is in custody, but not for the reason his victims hoped for.

Fadi Chaiban is being held in an Orange County jail without bail on an immigration probation violation.

But women said they want him prosecuted for fraudulently taking money from them.

Chaiban's alleged victims said he pretended to fall in love with them, stole their money and then disappeared.

It happened to one 73-year woman, who said she met Chaiban on the dating website Plenty of Fish in 2011.

"He took me to lovely restaurants and dined and wined me. It was tons of fun," said the victim, who wanted to remain anonymous.

But she said Chaiban became manipulative. She told Team 10 he used a psychic to make up stories about threats on her life if she didn't give Chaiban money.

"Two thousand here, two thousand there," the woman said. "Everything escalated in order to keep me alive."

He even faked his death, she said. By that point, the woman said she had given him more than $69,000.

"I felt like I was in this hole," the woman said. "And I had to stay in because he kept on making the promises so I could get my money back."

She's not alone. There allegedly are other victims in Southern California.

Court records show Chaiban went by several aliases, including Anthony Marino, Eddie Morretti and Vincent Paul Moretti.

A records check also found convictions in Nevada for fraud, prostitution and pimping, theft, and narcotics.

Team 10 confirmed with Orange County Sheriff’s officials that Chaiban is now sitting in jail, but on an immigration probation violation as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainee. He was arrested on October 25th and is being held with no bail.

Chaiban was being investigated not only by San Diego police, but also authorities in Orange and Riverside counties for the same type of crimes. Even though there are three identified victims, prosecuting Chaiban is harder than it seems, said a spokesperson for San Diego police.

“They’re in different jurisdictions,” said Lt. Kevin Mayer with San Diego police. “Our case is still ongoing and active, but getting more victims to come forward related to this suspect would help us build our case here to move forward with it.”

The victim says this experience has changed her life.

“Oh my god, forever… I’m on guard,” she said.

The victim Team 10 spoke to said she plans to file a civil lawsuit.

10News contacted an ICE spokesperson for more details on Chaiban’s arrest, but they would not comment.

Re: Sweetheart Scammer or did this really hot person pick me above all others?

This is anecdotal on my part, but the fake profiles I get the best hits on are where I pretend to be older 50+ with money. I have had some 20-30 somethings set up, and everyone who contacted me was a scammer, but the volume is nowhere near as much.

Casanova Cons' target wealthy widows online
    Posted: Nov 12, 2013 11:10 PM EST Updated: Nov 13, 2013 10:56 AM EST
    By Lynn Kawano

    HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

It's sometimes called the Romance Scheme or the Sweetheart Scam.

Casanova cons use singles sites to find their victims, often lonely, wealthy women.

"These guys make promises," says Honolulu Police Lieutenant John McCarthy. "They assume identities, steal photographs of others and say, this is me."

"I always had a feeling that something wasn't right," says a victim of the Sweetheart Scam who didn't want to be identified.

"This guy contacted me on Match.com," she says.

The man soon asked her to go 'offline', meaning he wanted to email her directly. Then they started talking on the phone.

"We (were) forming a really good relationship." She says the man gained her trust.

"They make promises," says Lt. McCarthy, "Whisper sweet nothings into the victim's ear, and then say, I need money."

Sometimes the con says he's in Africa and has diamonds he wants to bring to her, but he has to first pay a hefty tax.

In our victim's case, the man said he had a construction site in England and couldn't return to Hawaii until the job was complete. But, he needed money to buy materials to complete the work.

She gave him hundreds of thousands of dollars, wired the money to a bank account. The last transaction of $150,000 was stopped by an alert teller at First Hawaiian Bank, who noticed all the money being moved and called police.

Only then, did the victim realize, she was being played.

"I started crying because I feel really stupid now," she says.

The widow was able to get her money back but police never caught the con.

"It's difficult for us to identify this person," says Lt. McCarthy, who says the person is often in another country that won't cooperate with the United States.

Lt. McCarthy says they frequently use Match.com, but they have had cases from other sites like ChristianMingle.com.

The victim still uses several dating sites, but she's much more careful now. Anytime she is asked to go 'offline' she notifies police.

Re: Sweetheart Scammer or did this really hot person pick me above all others?

Lakecity woman taken in by Internet lothario
By Monica Lamb-Yorski - Williams Lake Tribune
    Published: November 13, 2013 8:00 AM
    Updated: November 13, 2013 8:53 AM

A Williams Lake woman who was victim to a Facebook scam this fall is anxious to share her story.

While she wants to remain anonymous, she asked the Tribune/Weekend Advisor to warn locals to be wary of meeting people on the Internet.

While she escaped handing over any of her savings, she’s decided to call her scammer the Internet Snake.

She was first approached by her scammer on Facebook in August.

“He said he’d learnt of me through another friend of a friend on Facebook,” she said. “He said his name was Larry Alberto from Clifton, New Jersey.”

Alberto told the woman he liked her picture and profile and wanted to get to know her better.

The romance moved along pretty quickly, she admitted.

“Within a week he was telling me he wanted to meet me, get married and the whole bit. I was thinking, ‘slow down buster.’”

Initially some sort of instinct compelled her to be evasive and not tell him too much.

But eventually Alberto said he worked independently for a company called Petronas and that he had been awarded a $3.7 million dollar contract for work in Malaysia.

He even sent her a copy of the contract, along with his phone number.

Soon after receiving a copy of the contract, she called him up to congratulate him.

“After that he phoned me twice a day,” she said. “Early in the morning and then later at night.”

It went from there to him arriving in Malaysia and the next thing she knew, Alberto’s grandfather, James Alberto, was sick.

“His grandfather lived in Clifton, New Jersey as well, and Larry said he didn’t trust the nursing home his grandfather was in so he was bringing him over on the plane to Malaysia.”

Allegedly, Alberto brought his grandfather to Malaysia, and once he arrived his grandfather’s heart condition worsened.

He told her the surgery was going to cost $5,000 U.S. and he wanted to borrow the money from her.

“I told him I didn’t have that type of money, although I did have $2,500 saved because I was going on a trip.”

Alberto then had someone pose as his grandfather, come on the phone, and talk to her.

His voice was raspy and weak, so after that it tugged on her heart strings, she said, and she considered sending the money.

“This happened on a Friday and he said his grandfather only had 72 hours to live type of thing.”

She asked Alberto if he couldn’t borrow money from the contract he was getting in advance, but he told her “no.”

When she asked about family, he told her all of his family died in a car accident in Italy.

Responding she encouraged him to call the Canadian Embassy or try other options, like getting a loan.

Instead, he told her she was the only family and friend he had and he didn’t know who to turn to.

“I go to church and on the Sunday I went to church and the sermon that day was on doing good things for others.”

She returned home from church, called Alberto, and told him she would help him out.

“He gave me all the information through Western Union to wire it to an account in Singapore, and the name of this doctor to send it to.”

Luckily she decided to google the doctor’s name and several sites came up about him.

The name she was given was Mashita Binte Jamal, but the sites suggested he had used many different aliases and it was a romance scam.

“So I phoned the Canadian Fraud Centre and the lady who answered said he’s taken up to $500,000 off of people preying on them.”

She wrote Alberto an e-mail, told him he was busted, that she knew who he was, and that he wasn’t getting any money from her.

“I told him what a jerk he was for doing this to me, that I had trust issues, and he’d used them against me.”

Looking back at her gullibility she can laugh, but says at the time she didn’t laugh.

“I put all the information in an envelope and wrote Internet Snake across the top,” she said. “People are always telling me I should try Internet dating, but no thanks

Re: Sweetheart Scammer or did this really hot person pick me above all others?

Facebook romance scams a heartbreaking danger

Internet romance scams are taking in millions of dollars a month in Canada alone, said Dan Williams, senior call taker at the Canadian Fraud Centre.

“It’s big business by people who know what they are doing and have the resources and experience to defraud people. Each one of the gangs is defrauding hundreds of people at the same time,” Williams said.

In some cases, fraudsters can afford to string people along for nine months before getting $2,000 or $3,000 out of them, he warned.

“To a victim that would seem there’s no way this could be phoney. This guy was at my beck and call for nine months, how could he be a scammer if he was going to be living off that money?”

Since 2009 the Canadian Fraud Centre has received 791 romance scam complaints where there is mention of Facebook.

Williams said there are two main types of mass marketing frauds using organized crime to rip off people with the same mode of operation by the thousands.

“Those two types are lines of communication and how they get the money from you.”

Scammers will make it as convenient as possible for the victim by using whatever modes of communication they use. Scammers are very experienced in whatever methods they are using to contact people and get their money.

“There is no part of what they are doing they haven’t done a thousand times,” Williams said. “They can locate a Western Union outfit near you with the click of mouse. And they might make it sound like they know this because they’ve been in your area, but the information is freely available on the internet.”

In most cases, if victims wire money to a location, it is actually going to that location, Williams said.

“Western Union and MoneyGram are the two common ways of sending money. They will either pin it down to a country or to surrounding countries.”

Williams said scammers can use cell phones from anywhere in the world in other parts of the world and on top of that, most of these types of gangs are multi-national.

Fraud criminals are extremely comfortable using fake passports, phoney credit cards, and will have runners who can pick up wired money.

“They have quite the network,” Wiliams said.

And it works to their advantage because should the Spanish police, for example, start clamping down on scammers picking up money at Western Union outlets, the scammers will quickly move to operating out of the Netherlands or the United Kingdom.

Whenever the pressure is applied, they will pop up elsewhere, Williams said.

Williams has been on the job since 1999 and said romance scams have increased immensely with the Internet.

“It has made their method of contacting people virtually free,” he said. “Not that in the old days they really spent that much, because even if they were sending out mail it was usually either stolen stamps or hijacked courier accounts.”

Part of the scammer’s credo is spend as little of their money as possible, always have someone else foot the bill, whether it’s through theft or compromised credit card numbers, he said.

“They will make use of all the updated technology. Whatever people are using, scammers will be very quick to pick up the cutting edge.”

Re: Sweetheart Scammer or did this really hot person pick me above all others?

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - I sometimes play a wealthy widow, its true.

A Victoria resident has lost $88,000 in an online romance scam after wiring cash to a somebody posing as an overseas love interest, according to investigators with the Victoria Police Department's Financial Crimes unit.

Police said the scam had been going on for months as the scammer developed an online relationship with the victim using internet messenger services and an online dating site.

On at least one occasion bank staff attempted to persuade the victim not to send the cash, but in the end it was sent, and later tracked to Malaysia and then to Nigeria.

"The victim in this case, they went to the bank to transfer the money and didn't take the advice of the bank staff who were very helpful in trying to get them not to send this money. Unfortunately they did and that money is now gone," said Cst. Mike Russell with the Victoria Police.

Police say the victim became suspicious after losing contact with the person after wiring tens of thousands of dollars overseas.

Det. Mike Johnston said it was not the first time that Victoria residents had fallen victim to the online romance scam.

“It’s a sad reality that frauds like this are prevalent even here in Victoria,” he said.

In two cases earlier this year, romance scams took victims for over $50,000, he said.

“We’ve seen time and time again that tens of thousands of dollars are being taken from victims here in our communities. We’re hoping that people will think twice before sending any cash or agreeing to any payment options that may seem even a bit suspicious.

"When in doubt, talk to someone you trust.”
    A growing scam

According to police, cash losses due to online dating scams have reached about $15 million annually and that number seems to be increasing.

Daniel Williams with the Canadian Anti-Fraud centre says these kinds of scams often result in a disproportionately high amount of money changing hands.

"Within the last three years, it's been the number one dollar loss amongst Canadian victims, even though the numbers of actual victims are barely in the top 10. The dollar loss puts it right up at the top," said Williams.

There are a number of red flags online love seekers can watch out for, however, according to Williams.

If the other person prefers instant messaging over talking on the website, their profile disappears as soon as a conversation starts, and they claim to love you within days of making contact, there is a good chance they are attempting internet fraud.
