This is great news that CID is involved and beginning to warn people of these crimes!!! I am not connected to any news channels right now so I have not seen anything for our national media concerning the romance scams but you guys are making some waves and it is being felt by the general population. This has got to be hitting them where it hurts - the money flow.

Thanks Scratchy, I did change a few things up with some news feeds just to see what else is out there. I cut my fake dating profile down to 1 account and still have a few suitors to get back to, but other things pop up, am like a monkey with a shiny coin with all this scam stuff.

Classy I know, but I got spammed by another dating site on a dating site. Like sharks. At any rate I asked Niksam and another scambuster I know as a few things jump out on the site.

Here the response I got from the friend who follows scammers in this area of the world.

Treat any Russian bride or dating sites with caution. It's well known that even the so called "legitimate" sites are rarely what they would have you believe. It's been established that most of these sites are just another front for making money.

It kind of works like this: The site owner fills the site full of false profiles, and unsuspecting punters join the site for a nominal fee. The "girls" then make conversation with the Russian bride seeking gentlemen to hold their interest in the site. At some point your chats with these "plants" will cut off with the site then telling you that you need to upgrade to the premium service to continue chatting with your Russian beauties, who then suddenly loses interest once you have parted with your premium fee. The hapless punter is then left bewildered as to why these women's interest have waned. Eventually the customer will of course eventually give up and look elsewhere with little or no complaint. This is particularly rife in the Ukraine. The cycle then continues with every new member to the site. It's a money making machine, or in layman's terms.... just another scam. Working under cover of a dating site means that they will always have a multitude of reasons as to why so many men were left disappointed, such as incompatibility, lady changed her mind, lady left the site and deleted her profile, etc etc.

The line that gave it all away:...... On the member application page is the following:

This of course means that you will end up receiving dozens of scam e-mails for many months on the strength of this particular clause, and the site may even be just a front for an established e-mail romance scam organisation.....

This is the actual site, and sure enough some of the pictures are being used multiple places on the web. I opted to join and was not even to my profile, when I was prompted to upgrade to a paid membership. That's not going to happen, but will see if I get any emails.

Introduction

A bride scam is not just a bride scam, it consist of other different scams such as dating scams, sex scams, and bride order scams over the internet. Many men are victims of a Bride Scam before they even realized it. Most of these men are looking for cheap sex but they end up falling in love with these beautiful women.[1] Most of these women think marrying a tourist can be seen as hitting the jackpot.[2] They think that these men will have money and solve all their problems.[3] Many men have sent over a hundred letters to these women but they never heard back from them. Some men sent them money for a plane ticket and never heard from them again.[4] Scammers contact their victims directly through their email.[5] This contact is unsolicited, meaning this person will contact a person without previous contact.[6] Scammers will send emails of photos of pretty young women. These photos will be revealing and sexy as the correspondence goes.[7] Usually to enable a personal meeting they need a visa to travel and purchase ticket money is needed.[8]
History

Men seem to look for love in all the wrong places. Many men turn to mail-order bride services.[9] These services have been around for centuries today you can receive these services through websites.[10] Before the internet, men traveled overseas to meet woman in the sex trade.[11] The sex trade is one of the few opportunities available to poor, uneducated women who make every effort for financial progression.[12] These women look for a profitable sexual transaction so they can gain a long-term relationship, marriage, migration, and escape poverty.[13] The men believes that love will last forever which leads to marriage, a family, and happiness.[14]
Law Enforcement

The U.S. State Department often refers to bride scams as "Boris and Natasha" scams, when a lonely American man believes he has found a beautiful woman to marry except Natasha ends up being a Boris. [15] Bride scams are a part of the rapidly growing criminal activity known as Cybercrime, which in 2007 and 2008 cost approximately 8 billion USD worldwide.[16] Currently laws are unable to properly deal with the various forms of Cybercrime that are facing contemporary law enforcement agencies.[17] The Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as Interpol are currently working to establish working relationships with other global organizations to help combat this recent trend.[18][16]

Most of the current legislation in the United States surrounding international marriage brokers (IMBs) or Mail-order brides began in 1990 and was superseded multiple times, most recently in the 2005 International Marriage Broker Regulation Act (IMBRA). This legislation was focused on protecting the women involved who are made vulnerable due to the multitude of circumstances surrounding their move to the United States.[19] Furthermore, some parts of the current legislation in the U.S. may hurt the ability of men to protect themselves against fraud. IMBRA stipulates that, "IMBs may not disclose a recruit's personal information to a U.S. client until the recruit has reviewed any records retrieved and has returned a signed document in her primary language (no exceptions) consenting to the release of her information."[20] The premise of this law may be to protect the women from domestic violence and exploitation and it probably does, the law does not provide inquiring men with enough protection. Currently, the only laws available to protect the rights of the men being targeted by bride scams are those concerning Cybercrime. The IMBRA did required the Attorney General to conduct a study on international marriage brokers, which sheds light on the women who use fraud to manipulate men with the promise of marriage before disappearing upon entry to the United States.[21]

There are laws concerning computer fraud and they can be "separated into two categories: 1) crimes facilitated by a computer and 2) crimes where a computer or network is the target." [22] Bride scam refers to the first category, "crimes facilitated by a computer," and is punishable according to U.S. law. U.S code number 18 U.S.C. § 1030. refers to Fraud and Related Activity in Connection with Computers, and explicitly states, "Whoever with intent to extort from any person any money or other thing of value..." is punishable by law. [23]
Nations and Organizations of Interest

Russia is where many of the contemporary fraud experts claim the prospective brides come from, and many of the anti-scam sites look to combat this particular form of bride scam.[24] Additionally, many IMBs offer opportunities to marry women from impoverished regions all over the world including Russians, Asians, and Latinas.[25]

With the lack of governmental involvement concerning bride scams, many unaffiliated websites have started to provide people with the "How to" when it comes to avoiding being scammed. Most of these sites include a list of "known scammers" as well as any photos which are known to have been used by scammers in the past.[26][27] Some people have even turned to private investigators to help them determine whether or not the woman they are courting actually exist.[28]

Russian bride industry is a total scam!

This was the first site I hit under Russian Bride Scam, they have some interesting stuff in this area.

HOW DOES THE SCAM WORKS?

A brief summary.

Basically, it is a scam where a lonely foreign man gets acquainted over the Internet with an attractive supposedly single female from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, etc.


Quickly, the " female" (the bait) falls in love with her Internet acquaintance, and shortly after " she" begins to plan her travel to see her Mr. Right in person. Money issues arise, and, reluctantly, the bait asks the gentleman to help "her" with money for her visa and tickets. Very often, the bait tells the guy that she has a work offer in his country, and she would be able to pay off the loaned money to him quickly.

If the guy agrees, the "lady" pretends to put all effort into making "her" travel arrangements. But the meeting continues to be delayed. " She" acts surprised to find out that there are various expensive requirements that " she" has to comply with before she can fly out of the country. Those supposed requirements usually include proof of financial independence and requirement to pay off all loans that "she" has in her name. And so " she" will reluctantly ask for financial help again.

If the guy is determined to make her supposed trip happen regardless of the expenses, he sends the money again and again. In the money keep coming, the "lady" will continue to experience difficulties. "She" will get robbed or attacked, may become injured or sick, may suddenly get arrested, or her apartment may get flooded or burned.

The scam will go on for as long as the guy is willing to continue sending money to help his "Russian princess" to get through her never-ending travel misadventure. The bait will keep the "flames of his love" alive by periodically chatting with him on the phone or sending him descriptions of "her" erotic fantasies.

In the end, he will be left financially exhausted, and " she" will continue to pretend like she is just one Western Union money transfer away for finally being able to meet her beloved.

The same scam works with single Western gay man. An adorable and lonely gay guy from Russia will be the main character of the same travel story, with very minor changes.




Most scammers ask money for one or more of the following:

- passport, visa, tickets

- travel insurance

- fines for failing to officially register their stay in Moscow

- financial solvency money ("pocket money," "travel money," "money to show to the customs," "money to show to the Embassy")

- money to pay off a loan or a mortgage

- sale taxes on the her apartment

- emergency medical expenses for the girl or her relatives (illness, car accident, death in the family)

- bail money / to pay fines for minor "accidental" violations of the law

- taxes supposedly owed on the previous money transfers

- money to replace stolen funds

- ransom money / financial debt to mafia

- presents for herself and her family at holiday times

- luxury items (cell phones, clothes, etc)



What the victim of the scam never realizes, however, is that behind all the seductive pictures and behind all the warm and passionate letters hides a cynical, manipulative, and sleek mastermind of the crime - a cyber thief of hearts and wallets. And this mastermind is not at all who you think (s)he is...

From above link I set up a dating profile. The site you set it up with is CuteOnly - Only Cute Russian and Ukrainian Girls which has somewhat of a mixed bag of reviews. Since I have one rule about fake dating and that is spend no money, am afraid I will not get any Russian beauties telling me how much they love me. But a site review is warranted as it is obviously a question of whether or not someone wants to spend money.

So I set up a profile with no picture and almost immediately had one private message. Actually before I had even shut down yesterday, but when you click the message you get:

That profile only links back to the site via google image search, but if I had to guess it is a plant to get excited men to join. Just a guess. I logged in today, my profile had 1 view, just the girl who sent me the message. I looked for an option to delete my account, but nothing jumped out. I had shut down other free sites and had an option of deleting the profile entirely with little or no effort. This makes me wonder if there are numerous "abandoned" profiles that puff the numbers. Again no idea, but changes will cost you.

Gullible West Australians have reported being conned out of more than $2 million in just one week, including an elderly man who lost $1 million in a romance scam.

Despite repeated warnings, WA's Consumer Protection department said between August 5 and 9, 24 people reported losing money in various scams.

That included a man in his late 70s from WA's Great Southern region who admitted he handed over $1 million during a complex romance fraud, which started more than three years ago and has left him destitute.

The fraud was only discovered after the man sent a large sum of cash to Ghana.

Two others victims said they had lost $180,000 and $91,000 each in separate romance frauds.

Another victim has reported losing half a million dollars in an investment scam.

And yet another reported losing $18,000 in a 'help me' scam, after being duped into believing a Croatian relative needed the money to come to Australia for urgent health reasons.

Anne Driscoll, WA's Commissioner for Consumer Protection, said the financial losses suffered by scam victims were enormous.

"People who have fallen victim to the clever tactics of professional and well-organised criminals not only suffer huge financial losses, but their confidence, trust and self-esteem are seriously eroded as well," Ms Driscoll said.

"It's heart-breaking to hear the stories of victims who, in many cases, have lost their life savings and also suffer the emotional and psychological effects of their traumatic experience."

Late last year, 67-year-old WA woman Jette Jacobs was found dead in a rented villa after travelling to South Africa to visit a Nigerian love interest authorities believe was scamming her.

I got this from a friend, it is a bit jumbled but good enough for poking fun at scammers purposes. Very simply he is targeting victims and claiming to recover money. In this case it looks like he gets you to hire a "lawyer" in Nigeria, what could go wrong there? At any rate your money will dissappear.
