Don’t be fooled if someone claiming to be “Gen. Frank Gorenc” contacts you over Skype or social media and asks for money.

At least one online scammer is pretending to be Gorenc, who became commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe on Aug. 2.

“We are aware of phishing scams impersonating senior military officials and encourage everyone to use extreme caution and sound judgment if someone asks for personal information or financial assistance,” USAFE spokesman Lt. Col. Paul Baldwin said in an email. “I can assure you our leadership here is not using Skype or any other social media platform to solicit funds.”

One woman who contacted Air Force Times said she communicated through Skype with someone claiming to be Gorenc. The person told her a story about a sick girl in Ghana who needed 1,000 euros for medical treatment.

When the woman said she didn’t have that much money, the scammer asked for 600 euros. At that point, she told the person she didn’t believe he was Gorenc.

“He called me an ‘old heartless witch’ and some more,” said the woman, who asked not to be identified, in an email. “Then I tell him I’m to talk with the U.S. Air Force about him and than he switched off the Skype.”

She has not heard from him since, but she did some digging and found at least 20 people on Skype pretending to be Gorenc.

“I hate gangsters like this and I hope somebody can stop them one time,” the woman said.

A quick web search turned up an email address for someone claiming to be Gorenc. Contacted by Air Force Times, the person denied asking people for money.

“I’m General Frank Gorenc from u.s,” the person wrote. “im presently war zone in Afghanistan for peace keeping mission. no woman is sick that we make to need money from any one, i have money. if you hear that from any once that says, is Gen Frank Gorenc please dont believe it. i hear this before that Africans are using my name to take money from people’s please dont believe it. im doing good on my job, everything is fine.”

“General Frank Gorenc” did not appear to recognize the name of the Air Force Times reporter, who interviewed the real Gorenc a week earlier.

Air Force Times forwarded the email and the information provided by the reader to the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

“Word from our operations directorate is that we have no open investigation on this particular scam,” OSI spokeswoman Linda Card said in an email. “OSI has to be tasked by higher Air Force authority to investigate all its cases. We have received no official tasking to investigate this scam.

“All victims of these scams are encouraged to call the Internet Crime Complaint Center with their tips and complaints about Internet and Skype scams, not go directly to OSI,” she said. “If an Air Force investigation is warranted, that agency will contact Air Force leadership directly and request official investigative support if necessary.”

This is a typical ruse used by internet Romeos.

Cleveland County authorities say a local woman was recently the victim of an Internet scam where she picked up Walmart items purchased with stolen credit card numbers and shipped them across the country.

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office asked residents this week for help identifying a woman seen pushing a shopping cart in the local Walmart, in connection to an investigation involving credit card fraud cases.

“It turns out she was scammed by a man over the Internet,” said sheriff’s office Detective Jessica Woosley. “He claimed to be overseas and needed money for various things. She did, in fact, send him money after some time.”

Woosley said the man asked the woman to pick up items he purchased from Walmart.

“These items were purchased with stolen credit card numbers, and she had no knowledge of that. She sent these items to the address he provided across the country.”

The Star posted a photo of the woman on its Facebook page Tuesday, and it was shared 69 times within five hours.

Woosley said the woman will not face charges because she was unaware of the scam the man was conducting.

Do you have a package or parcel from London then place on hold in Malaysia? Then that Cargo is asking for fees or charges for you to pay, so they can deliver it to you? NOTE: SCAM
If you have the same questions, well maybe scammers were trying to fool you also.

Their MODUS is this :

1.) He will try to make you a friend or a girlfriend in any social networking or dating sites your into. (for ex: myspace)

2.) He will also try to get your trust like telling about more of themselves like living in London, saying that he has a nice job and not just looking for fun.. meaning they want someone to marry.

3.) Next is he wants to get you mobile number, email address or even your home address.

4.) If he already knows this information, later on he will send emails to you that this guy is sending a package for you saying that the package have expensive things.. like laptop, ipod, gold necklace, diamond ring and money inside. He will also give a site with a password and order number so you can trace it.

5.) After this, the Cargo/Courier will email you or call you. Informing that your package from London was place on hold to Malaysia because they found a currency on it. So they'll be asking for charges for you to pay in Malaysian Ringgit currency and pay it in Western Union.

MY STORY:



I'm just a newbie in Myspace before and really after for music.. dont even think guys can add me up there. So anyone who wants to add.. I just accept. So here's a guy telling his name Azzo Elia (note: he can use any other names) telling he's a marine engineer and too busy for work so he cant even chat and will say he likes you already. You may got wonder why he can't add you there and he cant even do chat in ym... just want to hide his real identity though.

We always exchange messages there and so he will ask you for you mobile number, home address and email. He always telling that he wants to give some gifts to me and wants to marry me already. I really don't believe that he wants me to marry.. knowing me in just 2 months... i'ts sounds weird.

His telling me that he'll be going to Wales for a project for about 2 to 3 months and after that he will meet me after. When he tells me that he's on his way to Wales. He told me that he sent a package for me with expensive things, diamond ring and 5000 Pounds inserted on the laptop. He said that there's no scanner there so that's why he still put money on it. The weird thing is that, we know that money is prohibited in package, we can use money transfer instead of it.

Then I receive a text message from the Courier/Cargo telling me that I have a package from London and place on hold by the Malaysian Customs because they found a currency inside the package and wants me to pay for charges. The parcel went from London then to Amsterdam and now in Malaysia.. y it was not scanned first to that places and found out just in Malaysia.

I talked to the guy who sent it and said that he can't work now because of that, he didnt know that I got problem because of this and requesting me to pay for the charges 'coz he can't do anything at this time and besides he is not in the city. He also says that signal is poor in there, so he can't reply often. From that point, if he's rich why he can't do anything.. he can pay for that and not ask for you to do it. The signal is poor? but sometimes he can actually reply almost everyday.

I called up the number registed in my phone which has the country code of +60 (Country code of Malaysia) and that supposed to be from Cargo, don't know how to speak english clearly. I also asked on how to pay for it, and he gives me a name of Michael Pius from Kuala Lumpur on where to send the money. It should be in Western Union. From that voice, you can already sense that he's a scammer. And if that's an Intl. Courier, why you can't pay using credit cards?

This is an interesting one for a reload scammer. Claims to work for both the US Postal Service and EFCC, which last I checked are on two separate continents. Plus a whole bunch of other secret spy stuff. At any rate if you lose in a scam, these jokers show up and scam again by telling you that they will get your money back. Some sort of fee will be asked for and poof, they are gone.

Online romance scams, a new form of fraud, is under-reported and increasing, and has victimized 230,000 people in Great Britain, costing them nearly $60 billion a year, according to a new study.

Monica Whitty, University of Leicester, and Tom Buchanan, University of Westminster, document the rapid growth in these serious crimes and how cybercriminals pursue and steal from their victims. They describe the devastating financial and emotional losses the victims suffer.

The scammers contact the victim pretending to initiate a romantic relationship and establish a strong bond with them that can last from 6 to 8 months. Next they request money from victims by creating a story of a tragic or desperate circumstance such as theft of personal documents during travel, unexpected hospital funds, or travel expenses. Heavy costs may be incurred before the scam is exposed.

For the study researchers of the study obtained a representative sample of adults in Great Britain. The sample comprised 2028 British adults aged 18 years and older. The sample included 902 men and 1126 women.

All participants were asked the following question: ''In the'online romance scam' criminals set up fake identities using stolen photographs (often of models or army officers) and pretend to develop a romance relationship with their victim. This is often done using online dating sites and social networking sites. At some point during the relationship they pretend to be in urgent need of money and ask for help. Many individuals have been persuaded to part with large sums of money before their suspicions are aroused. Had you heard of the 'online romance scam' before taking this survey?'' Participants could respond either: ''Yes, I had'' or ''No, I hadn't''.

After this, participants who had heard about the online romance scam were further asked: ''Before taking this survey, where had you previously heard about the online romance scam?'' They were asked to select as many options as they like and were given the following options: a friend, the television, a newspaper, a magazine, the internet, online dating site, radio, other, or can't recall.

Finally, all participants were asked: ''Have you or anyone you know ever been a victim of the 'online romance scam' (i.e., scammed out of any amount of money)?'

The questions were administered as part of an omnibus survey, together with other questions on multiple unrelated topics.
The data were collected from the 6th-8th July, 2011. The response rate to the survey was approximately 33.3 percent.

Overall it was found that 0.65 percent of the sample had been scammed. This equates to almost 230,000 people. Moreover, 2.28 percent of the sample claimed they personally knew someone who had been scammed. This equates to approaching 1,100,000 people.

This study revealed that 51.66 percent of British people had heard of the online romance scam. Overall, 1051 participants stated that they had heard of the online romance scam prior to answering the survey. These individuals were then asked where they had previously heard about the online romance scam, and to select as many options as applied.

"The present results suggest warnings about the fraud are reaching about half the British population. This provides us with a marker for future research into preventive measures. It may well be, of course, that knowledge of the crime does not prevent it. However, it is important to compare knowledge of the crime and number of victims in future studies," said authors of the study.

"This study revealed that prevalence rates are much higher than previous estimates, which were mainly based on the reporting of the crime to the police. This large discrepancy indicates that the crime is under-reported, and further suggests that the law enforcement community needs to make it easier for victims to report the crime," they added.

The study was published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

QUANTICO, Va. – In light of recent national news coverage, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, commonly known as CID, is again pleading with internet users worldwide to not fall prey to the ongoing online “Romance Scams” that the Army has been combating since 2009. Army CID is hopeful that the recent coverage can potentially help warn victims of the cyber-crime that ends in both undue heartache and financial hardship.

CID special agents continue to receive hundreds of reports from victims located around the world regarding various scams of persons impersonating U.S. Soldiers online. Victims are usually unsuspecting women, 30 to 55 years old, who believe they are romantically involved with an American Soldier, yet are being exploited and ultimately robbed by perpetrators that strike from thousands of miles away.

“We cannot stress enough that people need to stop sending money to persons they meet on the internet and claim to be in the U.S. military,” said Chris Grey, Army CID’s spokesman. “It is heartbreaking to hear these stories over and over again of people who have sent thousands of dollars to someone they have never met and sometimes have never even spoken to on the phone.”

The majority of the “romance scams,” as they have been dubbed, are being perpetrated on social media, dating-type websites where unsuspecting females are the main target.

The criminals are pretending to be U.S. servicemen, routinely serving in a combat zone. The perpetrators will often take the true rank and name of a U.S. Soldier who is honorably serving his country somewhere in the world, marry that up with some photographs of a Soldier off the internet, and then build a false identity to begin prowling the internet for victims.

“We have even seen instances where the Soldier was killed in action and the crooks have used that hero’s identity to perpetrate their twisted scam,” said CID Special Agent Matthew Ivanjack, who has fielded hundreds of calls and emails from victims.

The scams often involve carefully worded romantic requests for money from the victim to purchase special laptop computers, international telephones, military leave papers, and transportation fees to be used by the fictitious “deployed Soldier” so their false relationship can continue. The scams include asking the victim to send money, often thousands of dollars at a time, to a third party address.

Once victims are hooked, the criminals continue their ruse.

“We’ve even seen instances where the perpetrators are asking the victims for money to purchase “leave papers” from the Army, help pay for medical expenses from combat wounds or help pay for their flight home so they can leave the war zone,” said Grey.

These scams are outright theft and are a grave misrepresentation of the U.S. Army and the tremendous amount of support programs and mechanisms that exist for Soldiers today, especially those serving overseas, said Grey.

Along with the romance type scams, CID has been receiving complaints from citizens worldwide that they have been the victims of other types of scams – once again where a cyber crook is impersonating a U.S. servicemember. One version usually involves the sale of a vehicle; where the servicemember claims to be living overseas and has to quickly sell their vehicle because they are being sent to another duty station. After sending bogus information regarding the vehicle, the seller requests the buyer do a wire transfer to a third party to complete the purchase. When in reality, the entire exchange is a ruse for the crook to get the wire transfer and leave the buyer high and dry, with no vehicle.

Army CID is warning people once again to be very suspicious if they begin a relationship on the internet with someone claiming to be an American Soldier and within a matter of weeks, the alleged Soldier is asking for money, as well as their hand in marriage.

Many of these cases have a distinct pattern to them, explained Grey.

What to look for

• Be extremely suspicious if you are asked for money for transportation costs, communication fees or marriage processing and medical fees.

• If you do start an internet-based relationship with someone, check them out, research what they are telling you with someone who would know, such as a current or former service member.

• Be very suspicious if you never get to actually speak with the person on the phone or are told you cannot write or receive letters in the mail. Servicemen and women serving overseas will often have an APO or FPO mailing address. Internet or not, service members always appreciate a letter in the mail.

• Many of the negative claims made about the military and the supposed lack of support and services provided to troops overseas are far from reality – check the facts.

• Be very suspicious if you are asked to send money or ship property to a third party or company. Often times the company exists, but has no idea or is not a part of the scam.

• Be aware of common spelling, grammatical or language errors in the emails.
