The first thing is for sites that have a presence in the USA to be required to police themselves more effectively. I reported that profile on Facebook from my real profile. Nothing was done and there is no way on Facebook to explain why a profile is fake or a business is a scam, so the reporting options are practically worthless.
Once he asked for money I was able to report that conversation with my alias and finally the profile was removed and then his replacement profile zapped as well. That is three weeks of scamming time and I had to waste hours engaging the scammer when it was so obviously a fake profile. The internet is something of the wild west and I do believe owners need to be held accountable for doing what is reasonable to monitor content that allows obvious scammers to hurt victims.
A fake twitter account was set up under my name and I had to send in a copy of my driver's license etc., but they took my complaint seriously the first time and got the fake page down. Facebook can easily access conversations for reported profiles and see what these low life creeps are doing. Scammer boy was probably stringing long at least a dozen or possibly several dozen women simultaneously and could have been stopped before much money changed hands. The scammer had comments on his page accusing him of being a scammer. That should flag in the software immediately.
Education is also a key. Everyone needs to know to check their own names online. More than a few military men have spent considerable time getting sites to remove fake profiles fraudulently using their names and likenesses. The Army's CID has been on this problem as well:

Liked that comment. "well, star fleet hasn't done anything." and actually was my first thought when heard the name. that captain has to put up with some ribbing.
Wonder if he can sue for identity theft?
Anyway when read last SBM's post thouht was how can we do that and not have censorship .
Agree with - education- think it should start in grade school. Aren't we trying to educate children to function safely in society.
Actually, just lied, that was second thought , 1st thought was : all we need is another agency getting involved domestically and having police powers with all that entails.
Been looking at things ever since learned ICE has extra police powers withing 100 miles of a border.
How much of the US population is that?
Thoughts for a different thread that probably doesn't belong here

Listening to the consumers of Ponzi SCAMS debate whether "2% a day is riskier than 1% a day" boggles my mind as much as listening to lonely old ladies explain that their new deployed military internet lover can't talk on the phone or Skype because of "security reasons".
I can only conclude that the titillating urge to believe makes their lives much more exciting than recalling what they were taught about the world by their parents or in primary school.

That line is a tough one. I am just furious that some sites like Facebook don't have an adequate reporting system to make getting rid of fake profiles easier. Facebook is making a lot of money and yet takes very little responsibility for their pages in weird ways. They treat the link to this thread as spam and the comments don't always go up, but numerous fake profiles that are asking victims for money never get removed and there is no reasonable way to report them. I couldn't get scammer boy zapped without going through tremendous hoops and finally linking the chat messages where he asked for money. Infuriating.

Absolutely about the lack of Facebook tools for reporting and follow-up on their part. We got all this press a week or two ago about cryptocurrency and related promotions being disallowed, yet go through the steps to actually "report" one of the SCAM group pages through their "report" tab and there is no choice for "violates Facebook's TOS". We get to choose from:
- I just don't like it
- It's harassing me or someone I know
- I think it shouldn't be on Facebook
- It's a scam
- I think it's an unauthorized use of my intellectual property
Choosing "It's a scam" produces the following two great options:
- Block xxxxx
- Hide all from xxxxx
Choosing "I think it shouldn't be on Facebook" produces FOUR great options!
- It's threatening, violent or suicidal
- It's hate speech
- It's sexually explicit
- It describes buying or selling drugs, guns or adult products
Where is "violates Facebook's terms of service?"
It's a joke. They have a welcome mat out for crooks because there are so many of them and they generate so much traffic. Youtube does the same thing:
"Want to post 100s of videos proclaiming the great financial benefits of your SCAM?
Welcome!
Want to collect and preserve scammer's videos to warn people that they are criminals?
One DMCA complaint via email and we will take them right down".

CID has done a pretty good job of educating people about these scams. Online romance scams
And people should know members of the service have a (.mil) email account they can use. "National Security" is horseshit if they're using Hotmail and asking for cash.

Education IMO is the biggest bang for the taxpayer buck. A simple Cease and Desist from the SEC is often all that is needed to bring Ponzi scams to a screeching halt, they can't even seem to get that right until hundreds of millions in damage has been done.
I love to see these pieces of garbage get prison time, but almost never happens if they aren't in the states.

Exactly, there's only so many things law enforcement can do.
Flying to Nigeria to find one romance fraudster in one internet cafe isn't one of those things, unfortunately, ESPECIALLY when the fraudsters' target refuses to co operate.

James Kirk | Facebook
Gee, why would James Kirk, the famous commander of the most technologically advanced ship in the Navy use Soliu Mumini 92 as his page link??? Facebook employees can't identify a fake profile to save their lives! How many times is this same goon going to be allowed to create pages and scam crazy old ladies???
