Merlin's Magic Bitcoins
Bitcoins are quite controversial right now, but here's an outright scam using them for entirely illegal purposes. Namely, a cash gifting pyramid scheme.

Thankfully, I'm not the only person this con was reported to.

And while I don't know who is behind the pyramid yet, I can point out a victim or two.
Let's start with Nigel Hulme, whose participation violates Gambling Act 2005.

Re: Merlin's Magic Bitcoins
It seems that we can add Peter Aldred of the Ethos Group as another member of this pyramid scheme. He's also been revealing himself to be a loon, on one of his own Youtube videos.
ethospete 11 minutes ago
As you state that is an 'Act' and is not 'Common Law' and 'Her Majesty' has no jurisdiction on land as all their acts, laws and statues are maritime law cover the oceans and are not laws of the land. If you check you will see that many online casinos which previously weren't allowed to operate in restricted countries, like the Philippines for one example, are now open for business as people there can now gamble perfectly legally for BitCoins as they are a digital crypto-currency not fiat. BB P
Sounds far too much like the court cases discussed at Quatloos, if you ask me.

Judging by some of the discussions in bitcoin fora, he may perhaps be the "merlin" account at the top of the pyramid.

Merlins Magical Bitcoins Gifting Scam
Here is the latest attempt to undermine the authorities. A new illegal gifting scam using bitcoins:
Merlin’s Magic BitCoins is the most Powerful Income Accelerator yet developed. Our highly experienced team has spent many months developing and analysing many different systems and algorithms. Using complex mathematical models they analysed and modified them until they were satisfied that all their stringent criteria were met. The end result is Merlin’s Magic BitCoins - a concept so simple that at first we couldn’t believe that it was so powerful. It is amazing that nobody has ever thought of it before.
Merlin has five different Circles, or ‘Round Tables’ and, as new Members join, their gifts are sent to the head of the next table due to receive a gift. Each table receives a ‘Gift’ in rotation. This means that each table receives 20% of all Gifts (1 in 5).
What is it?
Merlin’s Magic BitCoins uses and enhances a concept that has been in existence for centuries. It is not Network Marketing, not Multi-Level Marketing and is not a business or commercial activity. There are no Business Transactions, Investments or Securities involved. It is a private group of individuals who support each other by giving ‘gifts’ to one another.
What is Gifting?
Private gifting has been around for centuries and is practised in most countries around the world. Asian, Jewish and South American communities ‘gift’ on a regular basis to help people buy a home or start a business. People in the Western world ‘gift’ at weddings, on birthdays and other holiday …

So they used "complex mathematical models" and ended up with "magic" in the name? This can not bring any new converts.
On other note, I wonder how you prosecute this if Bitcoin are not accepted as currency. Did they prosecuted somebody before with pyramiding with something other than a currency or precious metals?

I always liked the Doctrine of Substance over Form as a catchall (although mostly an accounting/tax concept) in that you can't just call something whatever you want and escape the true nature of the transaction. I suspect under the law this would be analogous to exchanging people's cash for plastic chips and then running a gambling operation claiming you are only playing for "chips". Since at some point the people would expect to be able to convert their chips into either currency, goods, or services.
KSchang did a good write-up here on pyramids and ponzis, including a section on the Howey Test which also looks like it may apply.

Merlns' Magic Bitcoins now has it's own thread on the Talkgold HYIP ponzi forum

Re: Merlin's Magic Bitcoins
Where ever you find wizards you are going to find demons. Quite funny to see a collection of them all in one place spouting their nonsense. Demons hate goodness, beauty and truth. And demons are very real,. they are the controlling forces behind so many aspects of our world. Many people are totally unconscious of the fact that they carry these demons as part of their make up but they are easy to spot. Here they are hating like minded philanthropists who are gathering together to make a difference to other peoples lives and their own by sharing, giving and in this case investing in bitcoins. Take a real look at yourselves and drop the demonic - if you can and that is the challenge

Forgiveness may be well and good, cosmicangelz, but trying to paint white over harmful things by trying to rationalize them away as "like-minded" is not angelic. Perhaps you have been staring at the Sun too long and are blinded by the light?

Just to be clear on a few things Quasit, we are not playing Dungeons and Dragons, we here are evaluating scams. Not for ourselves, not to sell other programs, but for complete strangers 400+ of them on this thread alone. Hardly the work of demons, in fact more to the point, there are BILLIONS lost each year to online fraud, that is the work of demons.
Now enough with the silly talk. This "PHILANTHROPIST" is hiding his location. Scamadviser.com | check a website for risk | check if dodgey | check is a website s |check website is fake or a scam
CG1.JPG
And their identity, notice the part where the site is only expected to be around for a year? What do you suppose that means in scam world?
CG.jpg
You are either promoting this program, or comfortable with stealing from others to line your own pockets, to that end.

Re: Merlin's Magic Bitcoins
Obviously not a site then which encourages people to make up their own minds. More akin to a bunch of ignorant demonic bullies who are going to browbeat anyone who thinks differently. Still stuck in your views of the world needs a middle class to sustain a capitalistic system? But the first sentence says it all. A bunch of closed minded and ignorant buffoons...there are plenty of them around. .. :)

That Hitchin Herts address rings bells with me "prof." Was it the address of the payment processor pimped by "Dr Mara" of VLane notoriety? I think that was called Hatfield Oak.
Other bells sounding in my head are the names TCoughlin and Oxford Credit Union. There are pages and pages of posts about Oxford Credit Union on WLD and it is one of the few threads in WLD that is still active. I believe somebody made a post yesterday. I will look it up later but Hitchin is a small town just out of London and I would be prepared to go over there some time to see what I can find out.

Re: Merlin's Magic Bitcoins
You still sound very ugly and come across like the thing in the picture. The question does come up is although there online scams, how manycompanies and individuals and organisations are you spreading malicious untruths about. Put two bitcoins into Merlins Magic Bitcoins :) into the system and give us an honest update in a months time.. but still lets keep looking at the question of just how many innocent people, organisations or like minded people are you spreading demonic nonsense about on your site? Just look at the selection of smiley's you offer and might help you get some insight into yourselves. I wonder what kind of karmic payback you are creating for yourselves. Certainly if the can identify some real scams good for you,, but what about the other side of the pernicious nonsense you spread or would you just say that is collatoral damage to every other organisation, individual etc.

Re: Merlin's Magic Bitcoins
Little round fat man is the administrator, I suppose you move posts around to confuse which reply goes where , delete posts that is too powerful for you to deal with, block ip addresses so people cannot reply to your vitrole? A little round fat man...and you call yourself a good man? Sorry but perhaps you started out good but you have become that which you hated. A demon

Re: Merlin's Magic Bitcoins

Re: Merlin's Magic Bitcoins
And I would add, that you really should, for the sake of your own future welfare, be very careful of using the power of the internet to spread malicious lies about people and organisations. You have not done your homework at all, you are grossly misinformed by your own preconditioned prejudices and you cannot see outside of your narrow delusions. I would be careful if I was you, because you will pick up the tab later on down the road. The letter will be addressed to you. Good luck

It's just incredible how you can call it a pyramid scheme.. there is no pyramid. there are no permanent positions.. everybody goes around the table and drops off - and ! gets back on :) very quickly... :) It's not good what you are doing... I am warning you... the lies but i love all the links you provide :)

It really does sound like you guys are jealous of Peter, especially those remarks about his recommendations for cancer... there are loads of recommendations for alternative cancer treatments and they are welcomed by people who have cancer as many people recover from using these alternatives. Anyway sort out this cosmic karmic spat. Forgive them Peter, is the only advice I can give you. To people who know what Merlins Magic Bitcoins is really about . You look really stupid and you didn't do your homework and you don't know what you are talking about. That might not worry you right now coz the membership is not very big.. But it might worry you more and more and more as the membership grows?
