"You can make signatures by coating individual cotton fibers [with nanoparticles of metal], like a barcode," the University of Florida's Dr. Ken Kuno told Popsci.com.
Hinestroza hinted that the U.S. government has also expressed interest in his technology, possibly for use in money. The code could also potentially take the place of the large - and very annoying - anti-theft plastic tags that have to be removed at the register.
