Herbalife, Nu Skin Fall As FTC Eyes Weight-Loss Ads
Not sure what to think about this. The cynical side of me thinks it's just being done because the FTC is to understaffed, too lazy, or too afraid of losing to go after these for being pyramids.
"Herbalife (HLF) and Nu Skin (NUS) shares tumbled Friday after the Federal Trade Commission announced it would launch a new initiative to crack down on deceptive claims made by providers of fad weight-loss products.
The FTC said it would hold a press conference on the initiative Tuesday.
Herbalife shares fell 4.9% to 75.93 in the stock market today. Nu Skin shares plunged 5.2% to 130.90."

I don't have as much of an opinion of the FTC as I do the SEC, but in the case of the latter it is a revolving door with industry. Work for the SEC, get a cushy job, go back to SEC write a few laws with no teeth, go to a lobby shop. It is a stupid ineffective system. Then throw in politicians and their pals that don't even respect the law or citizens enough to outlaw insider trading...
Can only to venture a guess a very similar story could be told about the FTC.

I'm still trying to figure out how those garbage stocks got that high to begin with.

They might sound as garbage to people who realize what it is, i remember HLF IPO, it was excitement on wall street, logos and flags all over.
It is always a hype, and any "brand" name doing IPO will skyrocket, even now a market sentiment is on HLF side,
analysts analyze the financial reports which always "turn in the profit" (being a scam /pyramid and faked reports just does not fit into their valuation models) and they keep upgrading the stock,
most people just do not believe anything can happen to this giant. Perhaps they are right.
