That one appeals to my sense of humor.

Reminds me of some of the airports I flew into in South America.

There was this one particular town with the runway built on the side of the Andes. In fact the mountain was at the end of the runway. I forget the name of the place exactly, but Maricibo or something like that rings a bell.

Anyways, we're flying in on a 727 I believe and I still remember the pilot asking everyone to take a seat and pull their seat belts tight.

And I still remember him saying over the intercom: " I've only got one chance to get this right so hang on tight to your seats."

Not sure if he was joking around or not, but his instructions left a lasting impression on me.

Doc, that must have been the old UIO (Quito) airport. An Iberian AB340 ran off the end of there a few years ago. It's happened a couple of times. There are always some aborted (go arounds) landings there.

There is a 15,000 mountain just to the left and the mountain in front goes up to about 11,000 or so from the end of the runway. Runway elevation is about 9,228 feet. Thin air and plenty of towering cumulogranitus. Elevations behind are 18,000 plus.

As the town built up over the years around the airport, which used to be in the boonies, it became even more hazzardous to land there and a new location near Tababela was built and I think it opened last year.

I knew a guy who went there for a vacation and the aircraft hit a downdraft that was so bad, coming around one side of a mountain, that all the oxygen masks deployed. You have to hit the marker pretty quickly and reduce your speed and get her down, and hit the reversers when landing there. You sure as hell don't want to be landing long there. The airport required special training and was a Captain's Only approach, much like the old Kai Tak that I flew in and out of.

    Here is old Quito:

No, I don't believe so, ALA.

    I recall being in Venezuela.

Out of curiosity I looked it up.

Mérida, in the state of Mérida, lies in the midst of two of Venezuela's Andean mountain chains.

The airport is on the meseta, right inside the city, 2km south-west of Plaza Bolívar. City busses connect the airport to the rest of the city. The runway is short, and the surrounding high mountains make landing in bad weather difficult. Planes are often rerouted to the airport at El Vigía.
    That sounds about right!

Friggin' cows grazing on both sides of the runway.

I remember some crazy ******* of a pilot flying up to Angel Falls in a 727 - right through the canyon. I swear the wing tips were scrapping the canyon walls. I have photos somewhere I took. The pilot invited folks up to the cabin for a look at Angel Falls as he was coming in. People were banging into controls and what not. Then I recall him saying he was going to fly back through the canyon the other way so people on the other side of the plane could see that side of the canyon.

Well, I was trying to guess which airport because I knew it wasn't likely MAR (Maricibo), as that venue is not what you decribed at all. MRD then.......that is a tricky approach as well. SB Airlines had a bad fatal crash there back in '08 and West Carib had one in I think it was '05. There have been others.

It is a bit shortish (not too bad) at 5,348 feet but what I notice from looking at an overview photo of it, is that any 700 series jet after landing, would have to have a turnaround in very tight apron at end of runway, a really tight turn and then taxi back along the only active. (no taxiway). lol The airport was shut down a couple of years ago due to the nature and number of accidents and difficulties there and I believe you have to fly in to VIG now.

    Ann, can you confirm this????

Here's a phot of it when it was active.
