What Are Your Hobbies and Passions

I am always interested in what people do to relax, what they enjoy and what hobbies they have and how they spend their leisure time.

For me, I have several. Model building is one of my main enjoyments and building airport dioramas complete with planes and equipment in the 1:400 scale. I also have a garden with a misting system that I built in our sunroom, of tillandsias and bromelias that I have been nurturing for many years and doing a bit of cross breeding on. I also like to fly kites and build and fly radio controlled planes when I have the time, fish (salt and fresh water) and read. I usually have 4 or 5 books going at the same time and I read just about every day. We also enjoy music and dancing very much (do as much of that as possible). I like playing cards with friends and pool and enjoy a golf game and wish I had more time for that. I surf when I can (old school long board) and I swim almost daily.

I cook. I love to cook. Of course in my household it's almost a matter of survival as my wife is somewhat limited in what she can do in the kitchen. lol The only shopping that I enjoy is actually at the grocery store. Food gets me excited. lmao I watch Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations and Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods faithfully. Two of my fave shows.

I enjoy mechanical tasks and working on planes and cars. I am not so great on anything electrical however, but I have a brother who is fortunately. We also enjoy riding our beach cruisers around town.

I also really love animals. We have a small zoo here, a large salt water aquarium, two dogs and a cat and my sister has a dog and cat and her BF brings his cat over. (She lives in the guest house) I really like taking the dogs to the park and the beach and playing and bonding with them. The cat is a major cuddler. I would like to built a large tropical terrarium out on the sunroom with some chameleons, tree frogs and a small lizard and a water feature at some point.

And I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my kids and the grandkids and friends. I am lucky that we are all very close. I have always liked to travel and see other countries, experience the food (I always say that I have eaten my way around the world a few times) and the culture and meet the people and get a sense of them and their history. I like word games very much and crossword puzzles, Boggle etc. Once in a blue I still get in a game of beach volley ball (but my knees are crap so that's limited now. I enjoy walking on the beach, sitting on the pier or the sand and just watching the waves. Never get tired of that.

So what does everyone else here do/enjoy?

Well, I spent on the order of 20 years building models for a living so I don't do it much as a hobby. My Dad was an avid model builder (free flight) and designed all his models, including several flying wing designs.
I am actually one of those redneck conservative types that like to shoot and reload. I especially like black powder weapons.
I used to really enjoy hiking, swimming, walks in the woods and biking prior to my lung problems.
I like working with computers, but would not classify myself as a geek.
For entertainment, I am all over the map, action, western, comedy and The Food Network.

I think that building design and prototype and mock-up models must have been just wonderful. I would have loved that. I can understand the burn out factor though. I am not talented enough to design much of anything, so I work from kits. I always try and find the much older out of production and better quality type kits on Ebay from long ago though and from Europe if I can. I am just about to start a Connie as I am taking a few days off next weekend and then I have Grumman Albatross lined up next and a small stack of a few others. I have built models since I was a kid and my Dad and I often did them together when he was home. I just have them all over the place. I enjoy building them with my grandson now as well and my wife's sister's two boys that I got into model building a few years back. But I do sort of design my airport lay outs and enjoy that.

I have a few weapons and used to skeet shoot quite a bit a number of years ago and now rarely even go target shooting, but I always enjoyed that. I like researching subjects on the net and can maintain my puter but I just know the basics really and what I have learned or been taught. Most of it is beyond me. lol I sometimes listen to Leo Laporte on Tech Talk when working on Saturadys when I can and I am clueless to much of what he is talking about. I envy those who are so up on all the high tech gadgets and stuff. I really only know the applications that I use for work.

I really understand the physical limitations though of certain activities as I have had a few orthopedic surgeries and have some bad arthritis issues in my knees, hips, left wrist and right shoulder from decades of flying and playing sports and one injury while at work. My knees are just crap especially the right one. Sometimes I wear a knee brace and sometimes walk with a slight limp, especially after a long day at work. I limp home like an old tired doggy, which I am. lmao PITA isn't it? My kitchen counter resembles a small pharmacy now. lol But we make use of what we have and can do and plug along anyways. That is what matters.

As for Politics I consider myself (if I had to pick a label- which I hate because I think politicians on both side of the fence have issues) to be a conservative Libertarian if that makes sense. I miss the Republic we were supposed to have here and don't. But I don't want/need to get into all of that.

I often like the "old" movies the best, several genres, and watch Turner Classics, AMC and TMC and Fox movie channel to catch those. I was happy that Fate Is The Hunter was finally on again recently.

Same here laidback. I have spent a lifetime reloading everything from shotgun shells to center fires. I bag of buckshot now a days is like owning gold. Last I bought was 14 dollars a bag and I think its up to like 35 dollars now. Its not cost effective like it used to be.

Re: What Are Your Hobbies and Passions

Due to being out on the road constantly, I am somewhat limited in what hobbies I can pursue. When I was a kid I used to love putting together model kits, like those sold by Revel. One thing I would not mind taking up as a hobby would be model trains. I think I would really enjoy laying the tracks and creating a landscape for the trains to run through. I have always loved trains, the old steam engine trains were always a favorite of mine.

I do love to snowboard, though again it is so hard for me to do it regularly.

While out on the road, I do enjoy reading from time to time. I am completely hooked to books on CD. The books on CD really help to make a long and boring drive a bit more fun. That being said book on CD's have introduced to me some authors I probably would have never heard of otherwise, and now I buy their books.

I don't get to the big book stores very often, but when I do I spend a good chunk of change while there. I will be buying one those book readers soon, the kind where you can download books into it. I really look forward to getting one of those.

I certainly would like to learn more about cooking, I really like some of the cooking shows I see on TV. Cooking is necessary yes, but it is also a way one can express themselves and be creative. I have managed to cook some good meals, and some not so good meals, LOL.

I have a thing with wind-chimes, the few times I get home, oh how I enjoy sitting outside and listening to the wind-chimes. Puts me in a great mood and I reflect about things.

Re: What Are Your Hobbies and Passions

For some reason everything I really enjoy is so expensive that I cant pursue it but so long. I have champagne taste on a beer pocket book.

I used to shoot trap years ago and dabbled a bit in shooting skeet and sporting clays. My first love is trap though and I always liked it the best. It took me years and years to understand that the game was mostly mental. I tried to buy a better scores with expensive shotguns and that didnt work out. I shoot a Remington 1100 trap grade for skeet and sporting clays and a Browning Bt99 for Trap. Both are considered entry level guns but they both fit me and I have confidence in both of them after` years of screwing around and wasting money trying to buy a score with a high dollar gun. Its not the gun nor the load its the man behind it. It cost me a lot of money to tell you all this. Not to toot my own horn but I was the state champion once in my class shooting a 400 dollar Remington 1100 trap gun I bought used after I realized it was about me instead of the gun or load. I got mentally tough that day.

I own all kinds of guns. Im not into assault weapons and such. I like high quality pieces or time proven designs. IM into high accuracy centerfires. I have two different 220 swift rifles and I doubt most of you have ever even heard of that caliber. Its the hottest .22 caliber you can buy. It runs 4000 feet per second at the muzzle and has an effective range of about 400 yards. I have a little of everything but I never got into the whole assault weapon thing. Its just not me. Im not a hunter either. I just like to shoot for the fun of it.

I love muscle cars particularly Mustangs. I want to burn gas and rubber. I hate tree huggers and want to make sure I get my moneys worth before I die. Here again, there is no limit on what you can spend to go fast. Thank God, in my older age, I have slowed down a whole bunch and its not as important to beat the other guy as it was in my juvenile days. I still own one and I still get that feeling like a 16 year old when I fire it up. Chances are at this point Im not going to grow up completely.

Im into old lawn mowers. Im particularly interested in the Simplicty brand. I have a 1966 Simplicity 707 I want to restore. I also have a Cub 106 from 1969 that needs work. These are never ending projects for me. If its got a motor Im interested.

What else am I into? I want to fly and hell its just money right? I damn sure have blown a bunch on other stuff. Will I ever grow up? I swear to God I dont think I will.

    I want a strait answer.

How old do you have to be to grow up?

Know them quite well, dynamite caliber. I have a 17 Remington that runs just slightly hotter,(I'm getting chronos of 4350fps). On the other end of the scale I have a Marlin 45-70 that shoves a 500 grain slug out at 1150 and penetrates 26" of solid pine.

Well, the trade off is that the Swift uses a 50 grain bullet and produces about 1777 ft lbs, whereas the 17 has a 25 grain bullet and gives about 1050 ft lbs. contrast that with the light 305 grain load in the 45-70 that gives 2987 ft lbs.

Maybe we need a shooting thread before we hijack this one any more...?
