    Help Save The Rhinos

The Northern White Rhino is on the verge of extinction . . . there's only one male left in the world and he has armed guards surrounding him 24 hours a day.

There's currently a GoFundMe fundraiser to help the Rhino Rangers who are protecting him. (They also protect other rhinos, too.)

The goal is to raise $75,000, and 2903 people (including me) have donated money to help them protect these rhinos.

I just hope it's not too late to save this wonderful animal from going extinct.

I am delighted to hear this. There was a fantastic programme on BBC2 about this creature. Most huge land animals are slow and ungainly when they move but the rhino can move at over 30 mph when it charges. Researchers are just beginning to understand the reasons why its very unusual bone structure can take the stress of such weights.

Also they are amazingly affectionate and form very strong bonds with their keepers who can ride them but they sit on the hindquatres rather than on the back like a horse rider.

It would be tragic to see these magnificent feats of engineering become extinct.

    I like this guy . . .

Prince Harry ends decade in UK army; now to target poachers

The move was no surprise — the fifth in line to the British throne had revealed in March that he intended to end his service to take a more vigorous role in his charitable endeavors, particularly those in Africa. The 30-year-old Harry now will spend the summer working with animal conservation groups there, fulfilling what he has called a long-held dream.

Harry will work with the Zoological Society of London and with experts in wildlife protection in Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania and Botswana, sometimes helping rangers respond to reports of poaching attacks on elephants and rhinos, Kensington Palace said.

"Prince Harry will be one of the best-informed ambassadors for the conservation community on what is really happening on the ground in Africa," said Jonathan Baillie, the director of conservation programs at the society. "His experience will be of great value."

F the rhinos and all ACPSA efforts. They were more concerned about the freaking animals than Jewish children in Nazi Germany. Take care of your own before venturing in our kingdom.

    More news about Prince Harry:

Last week, the Prince was secretly flown into a military camp in the game reserve of Kruger Park, where he has been going on night patrols with an army unit as part of the government's anti-poaching campaign, called Operation Corona.

The South African force consists of several hundred infantry, 400 armed rangers and 150 others, including special forces and police – and they have already killed more than 300 poachers.

Last Wednesday, after the Prince had joined the unit, forces confronted three poachers along the Crocodile River. In a shootout, one poacher was injured and the rangers recovered a high-powered rifle and silencer.

I like this approach maybe as much as shooting and killing the poachers. Problem being there will always be someone standing in line to take their place if the money is right.

Sniff some bad horn not only do you still have a useless willy, but a permanent case of the shakes???

But since rhino poaching isn’t slowing, horn “unmarketing” must become more aggressive. A cunning approach has been devised by a South African firm, Rhino Rescue Project (RRP). For about $600 per beast, RRP drills two holes into a sedated rhino’s horn and pumps in a secret cocktail of toxins into its fibres. Consume powder from that horn and expect a migraine, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or, after a big serving, permanent twitching due to nerve damage, says RRP’s co-founder, Lorinda Hern. Signs warn of the dangers of illegal horn. RRP has treated more than 300 rhinos in South Africa since 2010. Since the horn is dead material, the firm says there is no danger to the animal

Sad news . . . a northern white rhino died at the San Diego Zoo, which means there's only 3 of them left in the world.

One of only four northern white rhinos believed left in the world has died at the San Diego zoo safari park.

Nola, a 41-year-old female who has been at the park since 1989, was put down on Sunday after her health worsened, a statement from the zoo said.

She had arthritis and other ailments and was being treated for a bacterial infection linked to an abscess in her hip.

Nola had surgery on 13 November to drain the abscess but her health began to deteriorate about a week ago; her appetite faltered and she became listless. Her condition got worse over the past 24 hours and vets decided they had to put her down, according to the zoo.

“Nola was an iconic animal, not only at the San Diego zoo safari park, but worldwide,” the statement said.

Very pleased to read that the zoo is developing embryos to be transplanted into six new white rinos from Southh Africa to act as surrogate mothers. It seems possible that the species might be preserved and live in your parks again. Many thanks to dedicated conservationists.
