    Music Department Video :
    Richland College

500 enrollments in music... in over 100 different music courses, each semester, with all-state and professional-level students, as well as students interested in all areas of the music field.
    Current solicitation online:
Strong collegiate music program with several unique course offerings and over 18 performing ensembles including Wind Symphony, Orchestra, Chamber Ensembles (Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Strings, Piano), Chamber Singers, Women’s and Men’s Choirs, Jazz Singers, Fusion Band, and Steel Bands in a department with approximately 500 music students regularly enrolled. Preparation for several major concerts and solo and ensemble festivals and auditions occurs year-round. The Richland College Music Department web site is at www.richlandcollege.edu/music where the Department’s promotional video can be viewed.

How many practice rooms are available, you ask? 4 practice rooms are specialized percussion practice rooms for all 10 or 12 of the percussion majors. All of the other 488 students plus most of the adjuncts teaching lessons share the other 11 rooms. So, students rarely practice and thus do not prepare well for their lessons (meaning they are not preparing to audition for transfer,) aren't practicing the music for the ensembles they are enrolled in adequately, and not mastering skills they will need to earn their degrees should they transfer. What are the music students doing that are trapped up there all day (as they are often in 4 ensembles each semester when they can only transfer 4 total and in few core classes as the music advisors are using the students to fill chairs) you ask? Well....... They are becoming card sharks on the choir side of the building and having video game tournaments on the band side of the building. With a laughable 11 practice rooms that are available only when adjuncts aren't using them, the students are trapped in the music building goofing off for endless hours.

So, many students are dozens of hours over what will transfer and facing out of state tuition if they transfer thanks to the advising. To add insult to injury there is an appalling lack of facilities leaving these students unable to practice. How much should they practice, you ask? Well.... They should practice piano for an hour or more a day to attain the required proficiency to graduate with a 4 year music degree and at least 3-4 hours a day on their principal instrument. Tax dollars and paying parents dollars are being flushed down the toilet in this poorly run program.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Melissa Logan is still putting piles of her students who are supposedly music majors into a class that no Freshman takes in order to keep them in her choirs for a third year. Richland music is not the first two years of a 4 year university degree. For those that survive it is a 3 year or more program where students end up with dozens of hours that put them in danger of having to pay out of state tuition while they become accomplished card sharks as there are few practice rooms and few serious students in the building. Tax payers and paying students and parents are getting a bloodbath!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

National Association of Schools of Music says:
    ADMISSION TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDY
    A. Admission Criteria. Institutions are responsible for establishing specific admission requirements for their undergraduate programs in music. Admission standards must be sufficiently high to predict the prospect of success in the program for which the student is enrolling. Diversities of previous education, background, and interests of applicants should be considered in assessments of potential as appropriate to the specific purposes of individual degree programs. B. High School Diploma. The admission policy at the undergraduate level should be clearly stated with respect to students entering from high schools. Admission standards for music degrees should compare favorably with those of the college or university as a whole.
Richland is full of students that Melissa Logan and Derrick Logozzo have brought in as majors that have no chance of successfully completing a music degree at a 4 year university. With out of state tuition and exhaustion of financial aid looming, the department should be honestly evaluating students and only those with the strong background, the requisite skills on their principal instrument, experience and work ethic to succeed should be enrolled as actual music majors. Most universities welcome students into the general choir, orchestra and band that have come out of high school actively involved in their respective music programs, but real music schools are not going to fill music major chairs with every warm body that walks through the door. Richland is causing incredible harm to students by doing this.

The building is filled with music majors who are struggling in Fundamentals of Theory (a course that no music major ever takes at a real school.) Many are struggling in Piano Class 1 and have no hope of attaining piano proficiency. These students are not told that they need to practice several hours a day for many semesters to get there. With 488 students sharing 11 practice rooms students really can't get any meaningful amount of practice in should they actually want to work.

Students are coming in that last played their principal instrument in around 9th grade and are now trying out another instrument and / or voice on top of that and fantasizing about a career in music. Students have principal instruments, but some are not playing at near the level they need to transfer and are not being informed of this. Logozzo and Logan do not send students to the Transfer Center to get degree plans and get in contact with schools they are interested in to find out what is really required to transfer there. Logozzo tells students that the Transfer Center and other advisors on campus do not know what they are talking about.

We have had people placed in ensembles that don't read music at all or barely read and think after posting their drunken creations on Souncloud that they are going to make it big. Students are told taking 4 ensembles per semester when only 4 total will transfer is going to help them as they are getting sight-reading practice and exposure to more music. This ignores the facts that the students are drowning in ensembles and classes that they don't need may not be learning scales, technical exercises and literature for their principal instrument that they do need to transfer. They are also not being put in the core classes they need in many cases. Look at the records posted in this thread and the numerous students that have been there 3 years and have in excess of 100 hours, but are lacking the 32 core class hours they need to graduate. That is totally inexcusable advising!

Others think they will be entering audio engineering as a career as Logozzo has lured them in to Richland when it offers only 2 of the courses in music technology discipline. 2 courses will not get the the certificates or 2 year Associate's degrees in audio tech and related fields. Those are available at Cedar Valley, but Logozzo doesn't tell students that. Some students might want to go transfer track, but again that requires the student to be in the Transfer Center and finding out specifically what they should be taking to transfer into a music tech program before enrolling for music classes they don't need at Richland.

Where is the oversight? The goal of the music department shouldn't be to grow in the number of students. The goal should be to attract and enroll as music majors only students that are likely to successfully complete the Associate's Degree and be at the level they can transfer and complete the 4 year degree as well. We need a much better audition and evaluation with music people who are not filling chairs in their own classes and are actually looking out for the students' best interest. A higher completion rate is a goal that must be set as the abysmal records I posted clearly demonstrate. Getting more students successfully transferred with only the credit hours that will transfer so that out of state tuition and loss of financial aid are not worries is of paramount importance.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

    Richland College Choirs

    May 9, 2018 ·

Richland Jazz Singers sang their final performance together this morning at Rowlett HS. It’s time to send our Shiori, Maritza, Steven and Jason off to their next great adventure! #nevertoofarfromhome #whatagreatyear #singingisfamily
Richland is only graduating a handful of the music students and getting them successfully transferred. A select few of Melissa Logan's choir students have auditioned for TCU and other top schools. Of the 4 that were supposed to be transferring after the spring 2018 semester, the first 3 of them ended up at Melissa Logan's old alma mater, Midwestern State University. Logan obviously doesn't know the Richland degree plan nor the degree plans for the college she graduated from and is sending her students to. Logan's students are dozens of hours over the Richland Associate's degree plan and as we can see the MSU degree plans are vastly different. The music advisors are supposed to be "constantly reviewing and staying current with collegiate music standards for music courses and degree programs across the US to help advise students for successful transfers to 4-year colleges and universities." Compare the degree plans and then take another look at the horrifically incompetent advising by Logan.

MSU does not entertain appeals for excess hours and their degree plans are very easy to access. Any student going 30 hours over the stated degree total pays higher tuition for those excess hours period!

One of Melissa Logan's Education Majors:
Total hours= 126 of 66 that will transfer
MUEN (Music Ensemble) hours= 21 of 4 on degree plan
MUAP (Private Music Lesson) hours= 26 of 8 on degree plan
Music Theory / Aural Skills hours= 24 of 16 on degree plan (
Fundamentals of Music is beginning theory that is not on any degree plans as it is for non-music majors)
Core hours = 32 of 32 on degree plan
Recital hours (required but not on Associate's or Bachelor's degree plan) = 6
    Additional hours = 12
    Voice Master Class =5
This class is not on any music degree plan and Richland has forced its students to take this class that is not transferrable.
    (MUSI 1183 (1 Credit Hours)
Offered at BHC, CVC, EFC, ECC, MVC, NLC, RLC
    Course Title: Voice Class I
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Course Description: This course is for non-voice majors. It presents the principles of breathing, voice production, tone control, enunciation, and phrasing in two group lessons a week. This course may be repeated for credit. (2 Lab.)

Another star voice student with gobs of repeated classes and hours that will never transfer thanks to Logan. If she ends up at MSU as a Vocal Performance Major she is already past the 152 hour mark and will have to pay additional tuition due to the excess hours. At 183 hours she hits the 150% maximum and is ineleiglbe for financial aid. Logan is destroying that music prgram at Richland and doing tremendous harm to students!

    Total hours= 161
MUEN (Music Ensemble) hours= 17 of 4 on degree plan
MUAP (Private Music Lesson) hours= 20 of 8 on degree plan
Music Theory / Aural Skills hours= 16 of 16 on degree plan
(Fundamentals of Music (6 hours) is beginning theory that is not on any degree plans as it is for non-music majors.)
Core hours = 59 of 32 on degree plan
Recital hours (required but not on Associate's or Bachelor's degree plan) = 4
    Additional hours= 39
    More typical Logan students:
    Total hours= 58
MUEN (Music Ensemble) hours= 12 of 4 on degree plan
MUAP (Private Music Lesson) hours= 9 of 8 on degree plan
Music Theory / Aural Skills hours= 8 of 16 on degree plan (3
Fundamentals of Music is beginning theory that is not on any degree plans as it is for non-music majors)
Core hours = 11 of 32 on degree plan
Recital hours (required but not on Associate's or Bachelor's degree plan) = 4
    Additional hours = 14

This student needs Sophomore Theory 8 hours and 21 core hours next school year. Another student that has credit hours out the wazoo!

    Total hours= 62
MUEN (Music Ensemble) hours= 14 of 4 on degree plan

It is painfully obvious that students are going to have dozens of hours that won't transfer as the classes aren't on the degree plans and are way over any that are and they will have mountains of extra hours to take to gain proficiency, prepare for recitals and to complete the requirements at the real school.

Melissa Logan makes almost everybody in choir a freakin' music major. She does not discuss career options and earning potential or the tremendous amount of work and expertise required to actually make it in a market flooded with people running around with doctorates (DMAs.)

NOTE: A Cappella. Mixed Choir. Audition required. Contact Director Melissa Logan at 972.238.6284, melissalogan@dcccd.edu for information.

The Men's and Women's Choirs have vanished from the course offerings, so this is likely all the singers in the college. The 38 singers should comprise vocal majors and many students from other disciplines coming in to sing for enjoyment. 33 of the singers are taking 2 credit hour voice lessons, which are normally the level taken by vocal performance majors or music majors with voice as the concentration. Another 5 are taking 1 credit hour voice lessons. So, pretty much everybody fresh out of high school in the choir is taking lessons and 33 are apparently music majors. Logan ran off almost all of the community members, including me, that were the heart of the choir for years.

That makes it obvious that Melissa Logan is incompetent to be advising and does not understand the content area at all. There is no way that all those students have the background, talent, previous training, experience and work ethic to make it as vocal majors. All kinds of tire kickers wonder in and out of that department. I am talking students that are very weak academically, have little or no piano skills when they have to be pass piano proficiency and be able to accompany choirs and students and no clue the incredible amount of work involved. She doesn't tell them that they will need to earn Master's or Bachelor's Degrees in the field to do anything at all. Only those that meet the standards for music majors at a real music school should be admitted into the program and treated like majors. She is advising so many students into complete disaster.

Post re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

What kind of earning potential you ask. Well.... I know plenty of music graduates. 1 has a DMA and went back for a 4th degree in speech pathology. So, this person now works in a clinic doing speech therapy. Another DMA with years of teaching experience as a full professor at a major university left the field and now works as a tour guide of sorts. Music is not a field where most can make a decent living. These students at Richland have to eat and the advisors there are not discussing the realities with them that they should be.

Logan's voice students are likely to still be waiting tables years from now or flipping burgers.

History of the Dallas Symphony Chorus

The Dallas Symphony Chorus is the official vocal ensemble of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. This all-volunteer organization consists of members who devote their time, effort and considerable talent to regularly scheduled rehearsals and performances with the Dallas Symphony, as well as appearances in the greater Dallas metroplex, across the United States and with orchestras in venues around the world.

The chorus traces its origin to an early 1977 meeting between Dallas Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Conductor Eduardo Mata, Managing Director Lloyd Halderman and University of Texas at Dallas Chancellor Bryce Jordan. Mata asked that a large-scale permanent vocal ensemble be created to make possible regular performances of major choral works with the orchestra.

The DSC's first performance as the official chorus of the Dallas Symphony took place under Mata's direction at the Music Hall at Fair Park on September 23, 1977 with a performance of the Mozart Mass in C minor. The chorus has since performed with more than 75 internationally distinguished conductors over the years.

Since then, the chorus has grown through the tenures of chorusmasters William Graham, Stewart Clark, Frank Sargent, Ronald Shirey and David R. Davidson. In December 2010, Joshua Habermann was named the chorus' sixth permanent director. Mr. Habermann assumed his duties in August 2011. In May of 2015, the Dallas Symphony announced a significant endowment gift establishing the Jean D. Wilson Chorus Director Chair.

All of the musicians in the chorus are volunteers who attend weekly Monday evening rehearsals. The rehearsal and concert schedule spans the orchestra's Classical season and includes the occasional pops and/or summer concert. Auditions are generally held for those interested in joining the chorus during the months of May and June each year. Since 1988, the DSC's Christmastime performance schedule with the Orchestra has expanded, due to its popularity with holiday audiences, from two performances to as many as thirteen.

The chorus has performed at New York's Carnegie Hall ten times, performed in Israel (1996) and South America (2003) and made its fourth European tour in 2018 with performances in Sweden, Finland and Estonia.

The Dallas Symphony Chorus can be heard on more than two dozen commercial recordings, produced by Naxos, Dorian, Delos, Sony, RCA, BMG, ProArte, Hyperion, Intersound, and DSO Live. Recording highlights of the Dallas Symphony Chorus include the critically acclaimed Daphinis et Chloë by Ravel (RCA), Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection (ProArte), Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky (Dorian), and Mahler’s Symphony #3 (DSO Live). The 2012 recording of Steven Stucky’s August 4, 1964 garnered a GRAMMY® nomination for the composer.

To financially supplement tours and activities outside of subscription series and other performances with the Dallas Symphony and Pops Orchestras, the Chorus has also performed occasionally for public and private functions throughout the metroplex and beyond.

I have sung under the baton of the DSO chorus director as he guest conducted a choir I sing with. The auditions are extremely competitive and the caliber of the singers extraordinarily high. The rehearsals are long grueling weekly rehearsals. No one walks in late or misses a rehearsal or performance.

    Our Vision
The Southwestern Master Chorale continues its tradition as one of the premier choruses in America, presenting beautiful, inspirational, expressive and exciting choral music.

    Our Core Values
The Southwestern Master Chorale is committed to upholding the following core values:

Purpose: Committing to excellence with the goal of advancing the Christian faith through music. Dedication: Sharing the joy of choral music through our community of dedicated singers, educators and leaders. Artistic Excellence: Achieving the highest standards in performance and practice through enthusiastic participation in diverse musical styles.Collaboration: Fostering rewarding partnerships between the seminary, the community, local churches, and artistic/educational organizations.
Integrity: Maintaining a professional level organization that serves as steward of the God-given gifts and talents of its members.

In 1915 the School of Sacred Music at Southwestern Seminary was founded under three governing principles: Spiritual and Evangelistic Fervor, Scholarly and Efficient Musicianship, and Practicality in Application. Beginning in 1921, a group named the Seminary Choral Club was formed under the leadership of I.E. Reynolds. Reynolds began conducting the chorus in annual performances of Handel's Messiah, a tradition which continues uninterrupted to the present.

In the early 1950s the choral club was renamed the Southwestern Seminary Oratorio Chorus because of its association with the Messiah performance. The orchestra that accompanied the Chorus in the early days was the Fort Worth Little Symphony Orchestra, the forerunner of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra (FWSO) of today.
In 1988/89 Dean McKinney and Dr. David Keith made the decision to begin auditioning community singers to augment the choir, enabling the students to perform works of a larger scale. The relationship with the now bigger Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra grew through the 1990s and included numerous concerts sponsored by the FWSO and Southwestern, as well as several joint recordings. The chorus has also been a source of experiential education for student assistants to the Director of the Chorus, a rare opportunity which helps to prepare them for ministry and professional music careers.
In 2008, in recognition of the great history of the choir and the change in focus from the singular presentation of Handel's most famous oratorio to a much wider breadth of literature and venues, the chorus was renamed the Southwestern Seminary Master Chorale.

The Master Chorale delivers a minimum of four major choral concerts each year, highlighted by a tradition of performing Handel's Messiah annually since 1921. The Chorale has also performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra (FWCO), and other fine ensembles. The Chorale has recorded 12 critically acclaimed compact discs and presented two American premieres (Jonathan Willcocks's A Great and Glorious Victory and Alexander Grechaninov's Kvalite Boga) as well as a world premiere of Willcocks's From Darkness to Light.

In May 2011, the Southwestern Master Chorale, in conjuntion with the Southwestern Singers, premiered two works at the Avery Fisher Hall, part of New York City's famed Lincoln Center. The two works, Peace Ascends and Excursion were composed by Southwestern Seminary's own Dr. Stephen Johnson and Dr. William "Mac" Davis, respectively. As well as the premiere pieces, the chorale also had the honor of performing W.A. Mozart's Requiem in the heart of America's premiere musical city. The Chorale was under the directon of Dr. David Thye from 2007-2016. Dr. Mark A. Taylor directed the Chorale from 2016 to 2019, when Dr. Ian Yeung Became The Chorale's director.

    Dr. Ian Yeung:

Dr. Ian Yeung, a church musician since the age of 16, has been a choir director and church musician for over twenty years. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees (MM, DMA) in choral conducting at the University of North Texas, where he held teaching fellowships in undergraduate conducting, and directed the men’s chorus. He studied under Jerry McCoy and Henry Gibbons, and also studied orchestral conducting with Anshel Brusilow. Dr. Yeung also holds a master’s degree in music ministry from Southwestern Baptist Seminary, where he is pursuing his second doctorate--a Ph.D--in Aesthetics and Christian Worship.

Dr. Yeung is an Associate Professor of music at Tarrant County College, and is the Artistic Director of The Dallas Chinese Choral Society. He is also the Artistic Director of Singing Girls of Texasat the Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts. In 2015, this prestigious, auditioned choir was chosen to perform at the American Choral Director’s Association conference in Salt Lake City. He has also held faculty positions at the University of Texas in Dallas, at North Lake College and Vernon College. Dr. Yeung is the founding director ofThe Vox Decorus Children’s Choirof Coppell, and in 2008, founded The Vernon Choral Society, comprised of students, college faculty and local professional musicians.

Dr. Yeung has been honored as a conducting fellow in The Dennis Keene Festival, and has studied and conducted under Helmuth Rilling at The Oregon Bach Festival. An early music advocate, Dr. Yeung regularly performs as a basso continuo organist and harpsichordist.

Dr. Yeung has served, and continues to serve, as a church organist, pianist and worship leader in Chinese churches in Hong Kong and Texas. Since 2016, he has served as an advisory board member for The Center of Christian Music Studiesat Baylor University, and is actively involved in academic research, publishing and Christian translation projects.

Dr. Yeung met his wife Michelle while in college at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. They live in Dallas, TX, with two lovely cats: Mango and Milo.
This is all the church music ministry, section and soloist jobs in all of Texas on Church Staffing. Many churches will go to the local colleges and hire students for $50-125 a week to be section leaders and soloist, but the jobs for professionals that need to make real money are as the listing shows far and few between and the paltry salaries or weekly pay are MacDonald's money when the hours of preparation and travel time are figured in. $125 is the pay for the substitute organists. Considering the hours and hours of practice and travel time that is starvation wages with no benefits, so fun for my retired friend who loves visiting churches all around the Metroplex, but not a way to even eek out a living.

    Summary:
The Saint Boniface Episcopal Church Choir strives to further authentic, liturgical worship through the singing of sacred music from a wide variety of periods and styles. To this end, the professional chorister will provide vocal leadership in the adult choir at rehearsals and during church services under the direction of the choirmaster, all the while exemplifying appropriate rehearsal etiquette.
    Qualifications:

    • Strong vocal and music reading skills.
    • Knowledge and appreciation of classical and traditional church music.
    • Willingness to learn new music (early through contemporary) and grow as a musician.

    Responsibilities:

    • Participate in all rehearsals scheduled by the choirmaster, currently Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM. Choristers should arrive no later than 6:55 PM.

    • Participate in special feast day services (including, but not limited to Christmas, Holy Week, Easter and Ascension Day).
    • Be willing to sing occasional solos (either short solos or solos which are a part of choral compositions) during above-mentioned services.
    • Take time outside of rehearsal to learn more challenging music so that appropriate vocal leadership will be clearly demonstrated in rehearsals. Notes should be learned no later than two weeks after a piece has been introduced for all choral music.
    • Because the paid chorister’s voice is so necessary to the success of the choir, absences should be limited to four Sundays per year. Please provide one-month notice to the choirmaster if possible. Absences beyond four Sundays may result in termination of employment.
    • Provide adequate substitutes when absences are required, especially when they fall on a feast day.
    • Verbal participation is encouraged. However, address all feedback to the choirmaster. For example, "We're missing the rhythm in measure 8. Could we try that again?"
    • Refrain from correcting other choristers in rehearsal. Present specific concerns to the choirmaster outside of rehearsal time.
    • Work cooperatively with all staff members. Maintain collegial relationships with all choristers, paid or unpaid.
    • Strive to maintain a Christ-like attitude at all times, showing respect and support for the community of St. Boniface Episcopal Church.

A Richland VP and the administration/leadership have been working very hard to address the numerous issues I have raised. The voice masterclass, which doesn't exist on any music degree plan, won't transfer and that is actually integrated into the voice lessons and voice studios at every other college is now no longer required. The students should contact Melissa Logan to inquire as to why she has put them in hours (some of them dozens of hours) that are classes that don't exist, will put them over hours, will not transfer, could cause them to lose financial aid and/or pay out of state tuition.

Melissa Logan and Derrick Logozzo are not supposed to be registering students any longer due to the current situtaion, so all the students enrolled should immediately drop this masterclass and expect the college to integrate that into the voice lessons / studios immediately. These students should all see Career Services to discuss job and career options. If students are absolutely certain that they wish to continue as voice / music majors, they should then go to the Transfer Center immediately and meet with the incredible advisor there. The Transfer Center will get students information for and in contact with colleges they wish to transfer to so that they will know exactly what classes to take.

Edited to add the voice masterclass was not integrated into lessons and is once again being required for spring 2020. Logan and Logozzo are still registering students for dozens of hours beyond degree plans, so the administration flat out lied. Richland is a chaotic mess and the DCCCD board is not providing any oversight as things continue to collapse.

None of those classes are offered for this fall. That means thanks to Melissa Logan that 3 of the 5 choral ensembles available last srping are now gone. Opera Workshop was not available again after the spring semester. The Men's Chorale: Richmen and the Women's Chorus: La Vox Femina were pulled from the schedules last week in early August as the VP is charge of this complete disaster and the leadership are trying to rectify what the rogue Music Advisor and Choir Director has done since she took over the program.

I signed up for the Continuing Education section of the Opera Workship in spring 2018 as I had not yet re-enrolled as a credit student. I never had the opportunity to speak with the instructor of the Opera Workshop who would in the real world be an esteemed colleague of mine as we are both degreed musicians, as Melissa Logan dropped me from the class almost instantly. The class was not full. As a degreed professional who left Richland with a vocal scholarship that I held for 4 years at E.T.S.U. where I graduated from with a Bachelor's of Music with voice (classically trained soprano with graduate voice hours) as my principal instrument, I clearly have the qualifications and background to perform in the Opera Workshop at my alma mater which is a two year college.

The problem is the incompetent Music Advisor and Choir Director, Melissa Logan, who refuses to put alumnae into their own choirs and music classes. She has run off most of the community members and is destroying the college's relationship with the choral alumnae who have been made aware how this clown of a director treats us.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Texas Choral Directors Association - TCDA 2018! | Facebook

Melissa Logan does not show up as a member on the TCDA (Texas Choral Directors Association) site. Many of her students at Richland College claim that they are music education majors. Logan's students do not seem to be aware of what it takes to succeed in music. Logan obviously does not follow degree plans for music degrees at Richland or anywhere else. She puts students in so many excess hours that they may lose financial aid at Richland and end up in out of state tuition when they transfer.

TCDA has tremendous resources she and her students should be taking advantage of. TCDA has student memberships. When is Richland going to get a choir director that can lead the program forward and prepare students to transfer successfully? 3 of the 5 choral ensembles are no longer on the schedule at Richland. UTD, Texas A & M Commerce and so many more of the colleges in the area have professors that are active members of TCDA and turning out excellent choral educators. Logan is an embarrassment to the profession.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan have registered students for mountains of excess hours that have caused some students to lose financial aid at Richland. Students that transfer to a 4 year state university are in danger of having to pay out of state tuition due to these advisors. The Richland administration promised to take measures to rectify this horrific advising nightmare, but most of the classes promised have not been listed.

    The administration issued this statement:
Response: The Guided Pathway indicates that students are not required to enroll in more than 4 semester credit hours MUEN and 8 semester credit hours MUAP to complete that component of the Field of Study in Music. Should students choose to take additional courses, they have the option to enroll in continuing education sections of MUEN and MUAP and not accrue credit hours.
Students have been informed that CE sections of music are an option if students wish to pay CE tuition as opposed to accruing credit hours. CE will set up notifications in the course schedule that concurrent sections of music classes are available on demand for student registration for fall 2019.

Since Melissa Logan's disastrous incumbency here at Richland it has gone from 5 choirs to 2 and the Opera Workshop is no longer offered either. There are less than half the singers in the department now and it is not attracting the number of transfer capable students that it used to. She has made a career of turning everyone into a music major regardless of their background, previous training, musical aptitude or work ethic and putting them into piles of hours that won't transfer and that will put them into out of state tuition territory at a 4 year university. Richland used to have a thriving music department that was the feeder school to the University of North Texas and filled with lots of very talented and hard working participants pursuing other majors who just came in for 1 ensemble.

I studied Music Theory under the esteemed Dr. Wallace and breezed through graduate theory classes thanks to his fine tutelage. Passing theory placement tests was a breeze for anyone who survived Dr. Wallace's very rigorous classes. Richland had a keyboard ensemble for years which I performed in as well. No one took Fundamentals of Theory or a Voice Masterclass etc. that doesn't exist on any degree plan and won't transfer. We sang major choral works right on campus. I and any one else who had sung through high school were encouraged to join the top choir as were many older community members whose hard work and dedication made Richland an outstanding music department. No one who was willing to work was turned away.

I assume with the horrifically bad advising, refusal to adhere to degree plans and her running off degreed alumnae, that Melissa Logan's position is going to be terminated. Who would want full time faculty that has had such a deleterious effect on the program? Turning the alumnae away from the program and harming their relationship with the college cannot be excused. At this point as the choirs are history and the Fundamentals of Theory should not be offered, so very qualified adjuncts could handle the 2 choirs left and teach the real music theory classes that are supposed to be offered to music majors. It is time to clean up this program and start fresh with faculty that truly care about this program and will build a strong relationship with the alumnae of the program who were the ones to build it. Boriana Savova is incredibly talented and proven choir director in this program and could easily step in an do fine work rebuilding the mixed choir with a diet of real music that is the bread and butter of university choirs. It is time for positive change. I want to come back and sing with my own choir.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Richland's music department has been filling classrooms beyond the maximum capactiy in vioation of the City of Dallas codes for quite some time. The Fire Marshall was out there and still classes are scheduled in rooms that cannot safely accomodate them. Melissa Logan is the one handling recital putting our students in danger even after the authorities have stepped in. Logan and the music department head, Derrick Logozzo need to be held accountable for this.

Richland does not have the facilities for the numerous music classes they offer. The band Hall F170 is a jam packed oversized storage closet that is used to store so much equipment, instruments, risers and more that it is very unsafe and simply not usable in the condition it is in. It is an excellent obstacle course for those that like that sort of thing. The students with their equipment are forced to climb all over it and each other. The Steel Drum rehearsal picture shows this clearly. Reducing Melissa Logan down to 2 choirs was a step in the right direction. With the lack of storage and only two large ensemble rooms, groups like the Steel Band may also need to be on the chopping block. Students can no longer be forced into 4 ensembles a semester by Logozzo and should now be taking only 1 as the degree plans specify and can be transferred, so enrollment in Steel Drums is going to shrink drastically. Steel drums is only transferable for percussionist and they need to take Wind Symphony, jazz and other groups to get experience in those as well, so they should only rotate through that group.

Richland must make many more painful cuts and streamline the program if it is to have a viable program. For example, Brookhaven is the only college of the 7 in DCCCD to have hand bells and harp. El Centro was the only college with organ for many years. Brookhaven also has a real jazz singers group and lessons to go with that. Brookhaven has several different choir directors that teach only in the areas they are truly qualified to teach. Logan has no business teaching jazz anything as she has no jazz related degree and there are no voice teachers available at Richland that can teach the jazz students.

Richland has got to pick areas to compliment what the other colleges are doing, combine programs with other colleges where needed and be much more careful who gets admitted as a music major. The music majors need to meet high standards to stay in the program as happens at every real music school. Music majors need to start out in Freshman Music Theory and taking the required core classes so that they can leave with just the 66 credits they need to successfully transfer in two years.

The pianos were moved back into Fannin hall after the renovation and once again there are 488 or so students and numerous adjuncts fighting over 11 practice
rooms. As this shows the classes are being scheduled in rooms that are not safe. Drastic changes have to be made as there simply are not adequate facilities to run the program. That is why armies of students congregate in the halls playing cards and video games for hours on end. Many of them should not be music majors to begin with and there are not nearly enough practice rooms for those students who are serious about the program.

NOTE: Big Band Jazz Ensemble. Audition required. Contact Coordinator Derrick Logozzo at 972.238.6254, derricklogozzo@dcccd.edu for information.

During this class the door that opens towards the parking lot (the top of the pictures 1 and 3) is always blocked by 3 bass players, a drummer on a complete drum set, other percussionists and their instruments, amplifiers and equipment. No one can enter or exit the room from that door (1 of 3.) On some class days the door that is in the center of the classroom and opens to the hallway for the choir room and instrument storage room is blocked as several vibraphones, marimbas and/or xylophones are set up. That room is so full of equipment and storage that it is difficult or impossible to walk in and through that room. We spend our class time climbing over everything in that room. It is filled to the brim. When bands set up in there we are trapped by piles of equipment we need to use to play and it is an exceedingly dangerous set up. Many large groups use the room and pull out piles of equipment to set up in a very crowded formation. The large Town North Band has expressed concern about the safety and extreme difficulty of their members navigating that room.

Some outlets are very loose and do not appear safe to use and numerous amplifiers, keyboards and more are daisy chained and plugged in strips plugged into other strips and extension cords and so on. The room is not set up for safe set up of electronic equipment. The 25 member Big Band Jazz Ensemble also goes into F289 to record.

F170 Band Hall These pictures were taken as the room was emptied for the renovation. On the large circular platform there were chairs and two rows of chairs in the front of it. The smaller platform was used for the Big Band Jazz and had chairs on the floor in front as well. The room was so full you could barely walk through it and open cabinet doors would completely block people. Attachment 24211Attachment 24209Attachment 24210Attachment 24212

Melissa Logan's college where she completed a little 18 month graduate program.
    Emory Concert Choir

The Concert Choir is Emory University's select chamber choir. The singers in the choir come from across the country and around the world. The Concert Choir has been selected to sing at both the Southern and National conventions of the American Choral Directors Association. It has given performances throughout the world, including Avery Fisher Hall in New York City, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, the Berlinerdom in Berlin, Karmelitow Boysch Church in Krakow, St. Nicholas Church in Prague, and in Bobby Dodd Stadium at the Georgia Institute of Technology with the Rolling Stones. The choir sings a wide variety of sacred and secular repertoire from the Middle Ages to the present, from chant to folk song. Recent performances have included the Vivaldi Gloria, the Bach Magnificat, Dove's Seek Him Who Maketh the Seven Stars, and Whitacre's Cloudburst.
The Concert Choir is between 40 and 50 voices, and is open by audition to all students in the university. Undergraduates and graduate students from all disciplines are welcome - you need not be a music major. Interested members should have a good choral background, i.e. High School choir, Honors Choirs, All-State Chorus, and the ability to read music is essential. The ensemble rehearses Monday and Wednesday 4:00-5:30pm and Friday 4:00-5:00pm in Emerson Concert Hall, Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts.
Audition information can be seen on the Auditions page.

    University Chorus

Open to all Emory University students as well as to members of the Emory community, the University Chorus holds a unique place in Emory life. Music majors and nonmajors, undergraduates and graduate students, faculty and staff, parents and their children, workers and retirees, alumni and neighbors, all come together to rehearse each Monday night, united by their common love of singing. The chorus participates in the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, and regularly collaborates with the Department of Music's instrumental ensembles, including the Emory Wind Ensemble and the Emory University Symphony Orchestra. Recently performed works include Orff's Carmina Burana, the Brahms Requiem, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, and the Haydn oratorio, The Creation.
Audition information can be seen on the Auditions page.
    Education
    Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, 1992-1993
     M.M. in choral conducting
Gee golly whiz. I sang Carmina Burana and Brahm's Requiem while on scholarship at E.T.S.U. and Beethoven's Symphony at Richland plus many more major choral works in my years of study through graduate level classes. Yet, I was not qualified to return to my own seat in Richland's choir. Funny how welcoming her old college choir is. Some master's program she completed. An 18 month Master's???

Not hard to see why her choirs have been cancelled and the choral program at Richland is imploding.

So, even though Dr. Crawford had 100+ singers and a thriving program and required only 4 voice teachers, the incompetent clown, Melissa Logan, comes in and the choirs are reduced from 5 to 2 and opera workshop is cancelled, but she has gone from 4 voice teachers there her first semester in fall 2016 to a whopping 7 this fall of 2019 with that paltry 2 choirs left. The incompetent clown makes pretty much everyone who is clueless enough to walk into her mess of a choir into a voice/music major, yet alumnae, degreed professionals and valued community members are not welcome in her mess of a choir. And, if any of her students that have well over 100 hours actually make it to a 4 year university, they have out of state tuition to look forward to thanks to Logan!

Logan can quit her big production of doing auditions for all of her choirs. With only 1 choir and the jazz singers (which should still be audition only and run by someone with a degree in jazz,) the competent advisors will place everyone in the Chamber Singers that wants to take a choir. Its about time folks be welcomed in. I will join the minute they get a real director in there!

the financial aid office at richland could disappear for a week and no one would notice bc they don’t be doin ****

yeah sex is great but has your city ever fixed a pot hole that’s bothered you forever ??

do y’all even be knowing what y’all talking about
The foul language reads $hit. Direct quote from Melissa Logan's loser and party crew. Why should the taxpayers have to fund this? Clearly this is not a serious student and this student has zero business in a music program on the taxpayers' dime. The music students that get in at real 4 year universities are in a totally different class. Richland needs a qualified music advisor and the department needs to start actually mirroring what the 4 year colleges do. If this student had been put in Music Theory 1 and held to the high standards of a music student in a legitimate program, they wouldn't still be wasting the taxpayers' money. Richland's Music Program is totally the Twilight Zone!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Melissa Logan's Richland College Choir student tweeted:
send me tweets i’m high n wanna laugh

disney world in 26 days. that’s all

if it’s bad for me i want it
Melissa Logan recruits illicit drug users, but degreed professionals that wish to sing in their own choir and take voice lessons for professional development are blocked by Melissa Logan. They are both in Disney World all of the time. This kid does not have the talent (she admitted in writing on Twitter that she is "mediocre,") background, training or work ethic to finish a music degree. Melissa Logan making every young person that walks in the door into a music major has been disastrous. This kid has wasted many of the limited credit hours eligible for financial aid and in state tuition on a degree that she will never complete thanks to a dishonest advisor that lures in everyone that walks through the choir doors. Melissa Logan then proceeds to put them in dozens of hours that will not transfer to fill her music chairs, may cause them to exhaust their financial aid and will put them in danger of having to pay out of state tuition at a 4 year university in Texas. It is high time that the Music Department takes out ALL of the trash.

Edited to add this student never graduated from Richland or transferred as of summer 2021. Another washout like the vast majority that Logan brought in and coddled.

from a community college may be applied to a degree program (excluding RN/BSN, BSRS, and BSRC) at Midwestern State University.

Any Richland student that is not core complete (all 42 hours done at Richland that by state law transfers as is) needs to know what will transfer before taking any core courses at Richland. Melissa Logan certainly doesn't know. She pops out of her office door to ask students in the hall what the easiest science class is. That kind of incompetence leaves students taking courses in the core area that will not tranfer.

The degree Bachelor of Music/Teacher Certification is 123-125 hours, not including
remedial coursework. The student should understand that dropping, failing, or
having to retake any coursework will make it difficult to graduate in four years.
Students should attempt to pass the piano proficiency by the end of the fourth
semester. To be admitted to the Education Program in the fourth or fifth semester,
the student must have a 2.5 grade-point average for six hours of English, have
completed 60 hours with no grade below a C in the major area, and have an
overall (all coursework) gpa of at least 2.75.
Melissa Logan, the advisor from hell, should read this from her own Alma Mater:
The Texas Legislature established that universities will not receive funding for students entering higher education in Fall 1999 or later or who exceed 45 semester hours above the degree requirements. For students entering Fall 2006, this limit is 30 hours above the degree requirements. Effective Spring 2013, the Board of Regents has determined that MSU will assess an additional tuition charge of $150 per semester credit hour for excess semester credit hours in which students enroll above these limits. To avoid being charged extra tuition, students should be aware of the number of credit hours required for their degree programs and avoid taking excess hours. Numerous drops, withdrawals, and changes of degree programs can also affect this status.
This student already has 126 hours for a degree that is only 123-125 credit hours. MSU accepts an unusually high 69 credit hours in transfer (the norm is 60-66 hours.) That means at 155 hours (125 + 30) this student will be forced to pay the out of state tuition rate. MSU does not entertain appeals. At 188 hours (150% of 125) this student will have exhausted their financial aid. With student teaching this student will be lucky to finish in 5 full semesters. Notice how different the hours are from Richland's courses. Most students really go through the ringer transferring hours. So, this student will be paying the higher tuition for at least 3 long semesters. This student should send the incompetent Melissa Logan and Derrick Logozzo the bill for the out of state tuition!!!!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Please see the attached Music Department Student Handbook excerpts. I assume that for obvious reasons this handout from the 2018-19 school year will never be handed out again.

Richland College Music Students Handbook of Misinformation.pdf

I could write something that would rival Gone With the Wind in length, but will stick to a few numbered comments to correspond with the pages shown in the Music Department Student Handbook:

    1. Richland has never been a two year 60 hour Associate's Degree + 6 hours up to the normal transfer maximum of 66 hours program. Students are put into numerous hours that will never transfer, cause them to exhaust financial aid and to possibly land in out of state tuition at a 4 year university (degree + 30 hours.) This is some really clever marketing, that is not in the least realistic.

    2. Students are not put into core classes as they should be. Numerous students have well over 100 hours and not anywhere near the core hours (32) needed to graduate with the Associate's Degree. With students in numerous hours that they do not need and that will not transfer and not able to get time in practice rooms (with only 11 rooms shared by 488 or so students and adjuncts teaching lessons,) most students are not prepared in 2 years to do successful transfer auditions. Ask the adjuncts!

    4. The department head, Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan are the ones responsible for the horrific mess this department is in. The adjuncts listed are the top in the nation and could not possibly be any higher caliber.

    5. The ensemble list is shrinking. 3 of the 5 choral offerings are no longer offered. Melissa Logan apparently had to be stopped from putting students in piles of excess ensemble (MUEN) hours that will not transfer. The instrumental ensembles will also reduce in number and size as Logozzo can no longer stick his students in 4 ensembles per semester. Painful decisions will have to be made going forward to make this program workable, no longer violating the fire code and able to keep its accreditations.

    6. There should not be 6 semesters of sequential Music Theory courses. Music Fundamentals 1 & 2 are not college level courses, are not on any music degree plan, are not offered at real music schools, will not transfer, put students closer to out of state tuition and exhausting financial aid and can add an extra year needlessly to students' studies when they clearly aren't music major material to begin with.

There is no audio, tech, recording or the like worth mentioning. Students should be sent to Cedar Valley and not tricked into coming to Richland. DCCCD Richland College Music Advising Derrick Logozzo / Melissa Logan Out of State Tuition Nightmare

    13. Students absolutely should not follow the degree plan presented in this lie-filled tripe. A degree plan should be filed immediately and students should be in Career Services and the Transfer Center before or during their very first semester. Students should follow the Richland degree plan (Guided Pathways) and anything required by the school(s) they are considering transferring to. Logozzo and Logan cannot register students any longer and should not be advising them in any way from what the records I have posted clearly show.

The Richland Associate's Degree in music is only a "protective shell" if one actually takes the necessary classes and earns it. The Associate's Degree does transfer as a block, though as the students are not core complete (32 at Richland vs. 42-44 at a 4 year university) and may have to fulfill very different core requirements, retake theory if they don't do well on the placement test, have to repeat MUAP and much more. That shell is only good if students stick closely to it and do not rack up excess hours that will exhaust their financial aid and put them in out of state tuition. Logan and Logozzo have routinely kept students at Richland for 3 or more years and well beyond 100 hours. The Associate's should always be finished so at least the students have a piece of paper in their hands.

    15. Logozzo's "Elevated Standard" is pure bull. Music majors at real music schools are only admitted to the prgrams if they have the background, skills, experience, training and work ethic to succeed. The Richland Math Department does not take students that are struggling in developmental math and sign them up as math majors and hold them hostage in a program that they will never be able to complete. Richland has got to stop filling chairs with any warm body that walks into the music building and start mirroring what is done at 4 year universities. This is exceedingly dishonest and students are wasting credit hours eligible for financial aid and at the in state tuition rate due to this egregious advising.

The "current trend" talk is also completely fictional. The music advisors are supposed to be "constantly reviewing and staying current with collegiate music standards for music courses and degree programs across the US to help advise students for successful transfers to 4-year colleges and universities." The current trend at all universities is to follow the degree plans to the letter. Excess hours are only required to taken when absolutely necessary. If students don't do well in their classes, don't pass junior barriers, can't perform at the requisite level then they are quickly removed from the program and not strung along like the students at Richland are. The current trend should be to follow the Richland Degree plan to the letter and not take one additional hour without good cause. That means 1 ensemble (MUEN) and 2 private lesson hours (MUAP) per semester for 4 semesters (fall & spring) only. 4 ensemble hours (MUEN) and 8 (MUAP) are on the degree plan at Richland and is the most that will transfer. No summer music program should be available. Summers are for core classes so that students can finish their 60 hour degree in two years. The current trend at most universities for Music Education majors is a total of 7 ensembles or 1 each semester and only the limited hours of lessons on the many degree plans that I have posted in this thread. This "current trend" is utter nonsense and fodder for lawsuits!

    16. Students should completely ignore all of that flowery nothingness and go to the Guided Pathways advisor at Richland followed by the Transfer Center to get specific course recommendations directly from the colleges one is considering transferring to. Enough nonsense!!!!

    17. Again, the degree plan from Richland with 1 ensemble per semester and 1 lesson (2 MUAP) hours should be followed for 4 semesters only and any instructions by the school one is transferring to as well. Music Lit is now 1 course, MUSI 1307 and only that should be taken. Anything else taken should be at the request of the 4 year university.

    18. Same story. One can ignore all of that and see the Guided Pathways advisor and Transfer Center. And, for the love of mud, if someone doesn't read music they should take piano class 1 as non-credit for fun and definitely not major in music. Richland has got to quit recruiting every warm body that steps foot on campus into the music program as a major. This is totally unethical. Piano proficiency is a requirement for any music degree and students need to come in with good keyboard skills and be willing to practice a minimum of an hour a day or much more to pass the exam and graduate with a 4 year music degree.

It has been mentioned ad nauseum here that the voice master class is supposed to be integrated into the lesson studio as master classes are for every instrument. One does not pay for a separate class that will never transfer as it does not exist and is not on any degree plan.

19-20. Proof in writing that Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan have routinely been placing students in dozens of hours that are not on the degree plan and will not transfer.

Richland College Administration wrote on July 11th:
Music faculty will not register students for music or core classes. Guided Pathway advisors will be available for students to be advised for core classes prior to enrolling in music classes. Students and Guided Pathway advisors will register students for music and core classes.

The Richland College Administration also wrote in response to my concern of students going over hours:
    Number of Ensembles

    • Concern: Eastfield enrolls students in 1 MUAP, 1 MUEN, and recital as MUAP co-requisites and that should be standard practice

Response: This has also been the practice at Richland College
The administration is clearly not providing any oversight. The records posted on the pages of this threasd and color coded show that is not correct as does the Music Department Student Handbook attached above where Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan have put in writing the practices they have been following that have put students in dozens of hours that will not transfer, caused them to exhaust financial aid and left them in danger of paying out of state tuition at a 4 year university in Texas. The misinformation and the woeful lack of communication must be corrected!

    21. Lessons for credit students that are music majors on transfer track can never be developmental level. That means that student should never have been admitted as a music major. A student that already has a 4 year degree or that is sure that they will never transfer can take a lesson for the purpose of participating meaningfully in an ensemble. Derrick and Melissa have put a number of students in private lessons and ensembles that should have been non-credit and started in piano classes, guitar classes and voice classes until they completed those sequences. Again, they have been filling chairs.

    25. Music funding is why as Logozzo admits he wants to put students in dozens of credit hours that won't transfer. He wants more dollars in his department and wants it to appear to be growing. The department due to facilities (ongoing fire code violations) and only 11 practice rooms needs to be very small.

    27. Practice rooms should be unlocked from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. I should not have to frequently call the Richland police at 9 a.m. to get into the room that I signed up for.

rlly need someone to go with me to the financial aid office so i don’t end my **** and everyone else’s in that hoe tbh
Trust me! The serious students in the building are hoping the aid fell through. This silly kid that thinks she is a music major should come back to college when she's grown up. Melissa Logan is not anyone's mother and she has proven to be an incompetent advisor, so the last thing anyone needs to do is stay in her little everyone is a music major program.

Richland's Music Department is imploding. There is only 1 bassoon student registered and 0 oboe students registered. Registration ends today. These dishonest solicitations for those instrument teachers talk of a department with 500 students.

There are only 93 students in recital and some are not music majors. Though Logozzo is still putting students in excess lessons and thrice or quadruple the ensembles on degree plans I don't think we can count a student in multiple ensembles as more than 1 warm body. I am counting 1 lesson as a full hour lesson per week that pays $48 dollars to a brilliant musician with a Master's Degree. The saxophone professor has 1.5 students. The clarinet, French horn and flute professors have 2 students each.

What gets me is "Where are the parents in all of this?" Aren't they aware of what is going on, or they just blindly accepting whatever they are told by the music department?

As the students are legally adults, the parents aren't informed of anything unless they ask their child questions or as paying parents require their child to sign a paper with the college that gives them access to records like we did. When we now paying parents went to college there was no out of state tuition for excess hours, so most parents don't have any clue what a mess junior is really in. The students trust their advisors and depend on them for letters of recommendation, so they never question the hours they are registered for either. The few that graduate and transfer get a letter at the 4 year school telling them they have to pay the out of state tuition and those that I talked to that got it were totally blindsided. This is going to get really ugly as the former students are hitting those 150+ hour marks at their universities.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Private lessons at 4 year colleges are reserved for music majors only who have auditioned in and are taking recital, an ensemble, music theory and the full complement of music courses as part of a music degree. The other DCCCD two-year / junior colleges only allow transfer track and seasoned musicians to take lessons and participate in ensembles. Students that were involved in their high school band, choir and orchestra programs are welcomed to ensembles, but the lessons are reserved for those that are transfer track or serious musicians.

Richland's instrumental music advisor put a student into 2 credit hour private lessons (MUAP) for piano and guitar for Summer 2 (July 2019.) This student had apparently never played before and cannot read music. Now, I am stuck in an ensemble with this beginner who can't even name notes on a page or count. Taxpayers are paying for horrendously expensive private lessons for a student that can't contribute meaningfully to any ensemble. The other DCCCD colleges would direct all beginners to Class Piano 1, Voice Class or Guitar Class. These college level performing groups are there to prepare students to perform professionally, for community enrichment and to prepare students to transfer to 4 year music programs. Beginners have no place in these groups.

To add insult to injury, this student is a recovering cocaine addict that was hospitalized outside the country for cocaine induced psychosis just two months ago. This student is many semesters away from being able to meaningfully participate in an ensemble. This student is also clearly not doing well. Adjuncts should not have to hand-hold troubled and beginner students in a college level class. There are many students who have been turned into music majors to their detriment and many who have issues that they need to deal with before trying to further their educations.

I am tired of being in a department filled with people who should not be in the program, as they don't have the skills and background to succeed and may in fact be dangerous. The department is a complete mess and we can't feel safe. The music department is not a rehab center, support group, or hangout for troubled students. It is supposed to be a real music department that serves students that qualify for and can benefit from the program.

    Name that note game:
    http://musicteachersgames.com/trebleClefOne

Recovering cocaine addicts have serious issues and need to be getting ongoing psychiatric help, group therapy and medical treatment:
    Cocaine and Psychiatric Symptoms

Can Drug-Induced Psychosis Cause Schizophrenia? - BrightQuest Treatment Centers

Cocaine-induced psychosis can become permanent. It is time to audition and carefully screen students that are admitted into the program. Those who are troubled need to be directed to the Counseling Center and beginners need to be directed to the classes for beginners.

That high school student that was placed in 30 credit hours in the spring including 7 MUAP (private lesson) hours on 4 different instruments, 4 ensembles and gobs more hours than any student should be registered for started this semester, but is now off of the recital rolls and apparently has left Richland. Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan advised that student into total disaster. No college on the planet would allow any student to register for a ridiculous class load like that. The normal limit is 18 or 19 credit hours for full-time students. it is no surprise that incredibly gifted student is gone.

    Total hours= 66
MUEN (Music Ensemble) hours= 15 of 4 on degree plan
MUAP (Private Music Lesson) hours= 28 of 8 on degree plan
Music Theory / Aural Skills hours= 8 of 16 on degree plan (
Fundamentals of Music (6 hours) is beginning theory that is not on any degree plans as it is for non-music majors.)
Core hours = 9 of 32 on degree plan
Recital hours (required but not on Associate's or Bachelor's degree plan) = 4
    Additional hours = 2
    Developmental hours= 9
That student who is so far over hours that they will face out of state tuition when they transfer is still taking excess hours. That student is said to be in 5 ensembles this semester. 4 ensemble hours are all that will transfer to most state universities in total. This student in their third year is also way over on MUAP hours. Only 8 MUAP hours will transfer and before they started this semester they were already 20 hours over what will transfer. They have pre-college theory hours that Logozzo forced them into and are clearly dangerously short on core hours. They need 21 core hours to transfer and complete the Associate's Degree. With 5 ensembles this student is drowning and cannot focus on the classes they actually need.

This student is apparently again in 4 ensembles and multiple private lessons even though they are far over hours and still lack core hours. This student will graduate Richland with over 150 hours. That means that they will almost instantly be in out of state tuition at a 4 year university in Texas. Logozzo's advising is absolutely criminal.

Another student that reported that they wished to major in music education is still being put in classes that will not transfer for them by Logozzo. 8 MUAP hours in 1 instrument will transfer. Hours in second instruments are not likely to transfer and should only be taken if the school accepting the student in required it. This student was pushed into private lessons that they do not want or need and can't practice for as they are only in class 2 days a week.

This student, one of Logozzo's star percussionist, after 3 years and 136 hours has no Associate's Degree and is not at Logozzo's Alma Mater, Capital University in Ohio on a full ride or scholarship. This student is not at any 4 year university, but rather this poor dear is back taking yet another ensemble at Richland and teaching private lessons at his old private high school. The public schools around here hire folks with the minimum of a Bachelor's Degree to teach lessons I believe. Edited to add that student is now at 138 hours and has apparently not transferred. That student has not graduated either.

So much for the administration handling the problems in the department.
