    The A&M-Commerce Vocal Division mourns... - Texas A&M University-Commerce Choirs | Facebook

Real schools, like my Alma Mater Texas A & M Commerce, highly value their alumnae and community member singers. Melissa Logan has destroyed the Dallas College Richland Campus Choir program. I left Richland with a vocal scholarship to Texas A & M Commerce. I had that scholarship for 4 years while completing my B.M. and earning hours toward two Master's Degrees. She kicked me out of my own choir twice and threw me out of Opera Workshop as well. Since when were degreed sopranos not qualified to sing in Freshman and Sophomore level classes?

Logan has run off all of the community members and made it crystal clear that alumnae are not welcome in their own choir. That coupled with her predatory and totally incompetent advising should have had her canned a long time ago. The program is a complete embarrassment and disgrace. Why should we taxpayers fund a program that is harming the young students and that we cannot benefit from?

I am thrilled to announce Credo Community Choir, the group I founded 9 years ago whose mission is to unite people through song, has been invited to perform at the 2021 Texas Choral Directors Association
    Statewide Conference!

This is a huge honor and reflects the hard work and commitment of our members. #Proud
ACDA here I come. Too bad Dallas College Richland Campus does not have the choir program of the high caliber it did when I was there......

Texas A & M Commerce, my Alma Mater, is performing the music of Dede Duson. She taught piano at Richland for many years and is a highly respected choral composer. Her music is absolutely gorgeous. She is the treasured Texas composer from my generation. Her music is a choral staple. The Richland music library has dozens of her pieces.

I owe her such a huge debt of gratitude for all that she taught me. Thanks to her I not only went in with a vocal scholarship, but I passed Junior piano barriers with the piano performance majors as well my first semester at Texas A & M Commerce, which allowed me to join the piano majors and take organ.

Alliance Music Publications Inc. - Dede Duson
Dede Duson is a Texan with music degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Houston. She taught piano and theory for many years, served as a church organist, and accompanied various groups including the Houston Symphony Chorus, Texas All-state Choir, and Mesquite Civic Chorus. Her compositions and arrangements are both secular and sacred, a cappella and accompanied, with treble and bass voicings as well as SATB.
Melissa Logan has no respect for the history of the college and those that built the program. I am going to do everything in my power to see the program built back to the level of excellence that Richland was known for and see that alumnae are welcomed back to their beloved home by a director that cares for the program as I and so many others do.

    Pros
Was a great district before reorganization.
    Cons
They hired a consulting group to demolish the entire district and its 50+ years of dedicated work by faculty, staff, and administrators. This was a “take control” reorganization fueled by a negative propaganda campaign and faculty are now seen as cogs in a wheel. Full time faculty are hired hands in the new dallas college structure and treated disrespectfully.
    Advice to Management
They must have been trained to dislike faculty and to show their disdain by ignoring or placating faculty. They do not see faculty as partners.

    Cons
Since the restructuring of this organization, there has been little to NO communication regarding where current employees stand or how thw structure will work. Upper leadership pretends to know what they are planning but everything has been so piece meal that current employees are working I the dark. We are also expected to do an inordinate amount of work with no clear outlines or training of how it is supposed to be done or why. Things are made more complicated than they need to be and the students are suffering for it. People have not been told they will be fired; but, instead, told they need not apply for the new jobs if they don't meet the new qualifications. These are people with Years worth of experience and knowledge being thrown out without a significant warning that this would happen. Leadership should be ashamed of what they are doing to their employees during this time where it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find a job. They bungled this entire process and still, refuse to say thank you for the work employees continue to do despite that most will be fired in less than a month.
    Advice to Management

    Pros
My colleagues are supportive and the reason I’m still sane.
    Cons
Since becoming “one college” (on 7 distinct campuses, faculty can no longer rely on teaching extra classes (extra service) to make up for our dismally low salaries We were recently told that extra service is a “privilege,” not a “right” as the administration set us up for not being able to teach the number of sections we’d previously taught. I was hired within the past few years, and though I had 16+ years of higher education teaching experience (full-time), they said they could only compensate me for 8-10 years’ experience as the new hiring policy capped out experience. I can’t afford to pay rent on my base salary.
    Advice to Management
Morale is low. People are losing their jobs under this new one college hierarchy as a worldwide stressor, COVID-19, is sweeping the globe. Faculty are warned their schedules may be cut, and our stress and health are suffering during the culmination of these work and worldwide events.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

I have only published a sampling of the egregious advising records for students. The following, published for the first time, is an advising victim of Melissa L. Logan the Choir Director and Music Advisor for the Dallas College Richland Campus. I have been in that Music Department for the last several years taking ensembles and lessons. I am shocked at how horrifically predatory and destructive her advising has been. I am seeing the devastation first hand.

Only a handful of Logan's advising victims have graduated. Of those that graduated or gave up whilst drowning in hours of music nonsense, only a fraction of them managed to transfer. Of the handful that transfer only a fraction actually complete a music degree. The Richland Music Department is complete disaster and is not holding students to the standards of real schools.

The vast majority should never have been enrolled as music majors. After 3-5 or more years in this 2 year program, students have 100-161 hours of mostly music nonsense and their financial aid is exhausted. If they decide they want to pursue a real degree or get training for gainful employment they will have to pay out of pocket for any more classes at Richland or the equivalent. Worse, they will face out of state tuition at Texas Universities at 150 credit hours(which financial aid does not cover) and financial aid there will end at 180 credit hours. All attempted hours at Richland and elsewhere are counted. Only 60-66 hours from Richland will count toward the degree plan at the university a student transfers to. The state tracks that, so students cannot pick and choose what to transfer like they think they can. Who will be able to finish a Bachelor's Degree with no financial aid and having to pay full out of state tuition?????

Melissa Logan continues to try to make every choir member a music major and puts them in dozens of hours that are not on any degree plan. That has left students with insane numbers of 100 up to 161 hours of almost all music nonsense that puts them right back in the dead end jobs that they were working in high school. Logan is destroying the lives of the students that come in.

When I saw this record I knew immediately that it was the son of someone I had gone to school with. I had the heartbreaking task of informing this parent that Richland College had totally defrauded them. The parent thought that their son was well on the way to a music degree and only needed a few more classes to graduate and have a fabulous future. To find out that they were not in the right classes to finish and would run out of financial aid was devastating. The fact that the dozens of ensemble hours he was put in would not lead to gainful employment but end this fine young man's college career is criminal. He was on financial aid as the majority of students are.

Thanks to Melissa Logan this former student has gone from working in the local grocery store that pays $8-$12 an hour to a seasonal job that pays $13-$17 an hour. That is not full-time, gainful employment. The years at Richland were a total waste for most of the students advised by Melissa Logan. Dallas College must be held accountable and this incompetent advisor who fills her own music class chairs must be terminated. Students need to be in Career Services, Thunderduck Hall to see the real advisors offices and the Transfer Center to prepare for jobs that pay.

Of the 60 credit hour degree plan this student has:
29 MUEN credits of 4 on degree plan and transferable
2 MUAP credits (private lessons in 1 instrument) credits of 8 on degree plan and transferable
0 Credits of Music Theory and Ear Training Credits of 16 (4 semesters) needed to transfer
1 credit of recital of 4 required
30 credits of Student Success / Developmental not on degree plan

20 Core hours attempted of 32 (Music Appreciation 3 credit hours is not for Music majors, Music Literature is)
    11 Core hours repeated
3 Intro to Computing + (3 repeated not on degree plan)
3 Film Appreciation (3 not on degree plan)
1 Voice Class (1 not on degree plan)
3 Learning Framework (3 not on degree plan)

    Total hours attempted = 106

Hours remaining for Associate’s Degree in music:

6 MUAP credits in 1 instrument
9 or more Core hours depending on whether attempted core hours were passed plus Music Literature 1307 (3 credit hours)
16 credit hours of Music Theory (2 year of Fall / Spring sequence)
3 more credits of recital (part of 4 year music degrees that is normally required but that does not show in degree plans)
4 credits of class piano (2 year of Fall / Spring) recommended to transfer as piano proficiency is a degree requirement for a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and normally taken in the Freshman and Sophomore years

Remaining hours = 41 + depending on what was passed and progress going forward for what should have been a 60 credit hour degree plus the 4 hours of piano class as recommended.

    1.0★★★★★

Current Employee, more than 10 years

Used to Love My Job; Now I Hate It

Mar 22, 2021 - Professor in Dallas, TX

    Pros
autonomy, ability to take on extra service for extra pay

    Cons
Under new organization that corporatizes higher education; Fired countless, talented, long-time administrators without warning; unorganized scheduling system; lack of clear communication channels between higher admin & faculty; ineffective text book ordering system; condescending provost; claims to have embraced a more “student centric” approach yet students now have much less technology and academic advising support; no opportunities for a pay raise once someone has acquired (or has) a PhD
Registration starts in 3 days. The schedules for Summer and Fall are totally screwed and unusable. Classes show on campus meetings, but the campus isn't listed so there is no way to tell where the class is being held. Classes that do show a campus in some cases show the wrong one. Classes that will have scheduled online meetings don't reflect that. This semester many students found themselves with 2 or more classes meeting at the same time online as those times are never published. Many long time instructors have been left off the MUAP (private leseson) and other schedules. Professors are listed in the wrong classes all over the schedules.

No doubt books will be a nightmare to get again as usual. We had to buy books ourselves even though we paid for the joke of an IncludED program that was supposed to cover all required textbooks.

Richland's dirty music advisors are still listed in an even more ridiculous mess of a schedule. Richland claims 20 ensembles. Only 8 made this semester. Usually 13 or so will make and that is with the dirty advisors putting students into 3-4 rather than the 1 ensemble on the degree plan that will transfer. Now, the new folks in charge as the wild firing and reorganizing goes on have 33 ensembles listed at Richland for the Fall.

Dallas College is total chaos. Total Fail and waste of our tax dollars!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Notice the concert attendance. I was the audience. The program has been dying for years. Carnival of Steel has collapsed to the point the only vendor at the last live event was the food caterer that Logozzo hired. No vendors will come out, only a handful of groups came in and played during that day (with half of them from Richland at Logozzo's request) and then all left before the evening concert. That last evening concert might have had 80 in the audience. That was parents, students who worked the show and the families of the guest artists and a number of Logozzo's relatives. There was almost no public interest whatsoever.

Derrick Logozzo has completely destroyed this program with his dirty advising. The guitar class didn't make, but the few students left were forced to go up and perform so Logozzo could get something on stage.

Trying to make everyone a music major despite the fact few are qualified to do so and putting every student that walks through the door in dozens of hours that apply to nothing and don't transfer is having catastrophic results. Students are exhausting their financial aid and going right back to the dead end jobs they had in high school. Of the handful that manage to transfer only a fraction ever finish a degree thanks to the horrific advising by Logozzo to fill his chairs.

Dallas College needs to terminate the dirty advisors and start running an honest program. Students that come in should be welcomed into an ensemble while they pursue a degree that will lead to gainful employment. The select few capable of earning a degree in music should be in a rigorous program that exactly matches the degree plans and not used to fill ensemble, Fundamentals of Theory and lesson chairs to artificially increase the numbers for Logozzo.

Ensemble sizes need to fit the type of group. Guitar ensemble should cap at 15 and make with 5 as should the Jazz Combos, Fusion, Chamber Brass, Chamber Strings, Chamber Woodwinds and Jazz Improvisation etc.

Dallas College Richland Campus has the best adjuncts available, but the dirty advising by Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan, unmotivated and unqualified students retained in the program by Logan and Logozzo, and large class sizes have sunk the program like the Titanic. The program is a complete disaster at this juncture. Dallas College needs new leadership on all levels for this program and huge changes to make it trustworthy, viable and able to once again attract the top students in the area.

Richland is only a two-year program. This group and the Big Band Jazz need to be removed from the schedules. Logozzo can no longer put students into excess hours (meaning only the 4 ensemble hours total that will transfer with 1 each semester for 4 semesters total,) so loading students into this as their 3rd or 4th ensemble has to end. The few percussion students can play steel pans in one of their 4 percussion ensemble credit hours. For the students serious about transferring in Jazz we need the Jazz Combos, Jazz Improvisation and Fusion Band to be offered every semester.

"A premiere DFW world music event." This event has been dying for years. Tickets were only $10 and there was almost no audience but family and music student workers. The online free event this year had a whopping audience of 8 including me taking screenshots. A total waste of tax dollars.

    Chamber Strings format.
10 ensembles at Brookhaven are in session. Richland has only 1. Derrick Logozzo and his dirty advising has run the Richland program totally into the ground.

Notice that Brookhaven gets students on the degree plan and out in 2 years. Logozzo's 3-5 year full-time 100-161 credit hour nightmare should have gotten him fired years ago. Brookhaven's students are brought into a legitimate program and will not have to worry about exhausting financial aid and having to pay thousands in out of state tuition out of their own pockets.

It’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know
Jul 11, 2021 - Accountant in Mesquite, TX

    Pros
Relaxed work environment unless your boss has taken credit for your work and something went wrong, then it’s a toxic work environment until you make your boss look good again… Hours are set in stone and the workflow is predictable which makes planning around work easy. As long as the work is good and there are no issues you are not bothered by anyone. No clock watching.

    Cons
One of the biggest negatives working here is that you can easily be more skilled, qualified, suited for your bosses position than they are. This means you end up doing their job and yours because they can’t do it themselves properly and force it upon you under the “other duties as assigned” caveat in the job descriptions. Zero opportunities for upward advancement, even if you have Graduate degrees. Politics here are insane. The only way to get ahead/move up is entirely based on who you are “friends” with. Your skill set, education, certifications, licensure, etc… mean absolutely nothing. HUGE disconnect between upper management and staff. Almost no communication, unless something is wrong and then you will have more communication than you care for and it won’t be in a respectful or professional manner. Too many “cliques,” and if you aren’t a part of the clique then you will not have a good work experience.

    Advice to Management
Practice what you preach. Hypocrisy is not a good look for you. Promote people based on skill, merit, and education, not on who you went to camp gladiator with or who attends church with you.

      Cons
Things seem to fall apart, loyalty loss, unsecured place to work when it become one college. Many positions are going away. You must have to apply for a new job internally if you still hope to stay. This can’t guarantee you will be re-hired. If you get hired, good luck! Who knows they are going to change again or trying to re-organize this structure again in the future. Going through all these again is really stressful. Overall, “the family” is about to collapse.

      Advice to Management
Leaders need to improve their communication, need to gain employee, loyalty, employees need to feel like “home” as before and secured, or put themselves in the employee shoes. You need to increase the quality you serve the students before you increase the “quantity” or the number of your students you wish to serve. If many positions are gone, some people are desperated for a job to support their family, there will be no guarantee that they would be placed into the right place or to have a good quality performance on their new jobs. Let the way it was before becoming “One College”. Some people might have to overesee many campuses, the quality of performance might not be guaranteed.

      Toxic Environment
May 26, 2021 - Administrative Assistant in Irving, TX

      Pros
Part-time + full time I've worked here over 20 years, and most of those years were good. We had a very family-like environment, but that changed about 7 or 8 years ago. There are many good people still here that I love, but they'll all probably be gone soon as well.

      Cons
People are leaving here in droves. Management is awful. It is very clear that the people now in charge don't care about their employees at all. A LOT of age and racial discrimination. They're getting rid of anyone who has been here long enough to be good at their job and hiring people who look "right" but don't have a clue. Low pay. More and more work load. No concern for how decisions will effect workers. Cold, and very impersonal orders coming down from above - no information about why, or what to expect in the future. No security at all.

      Advice to Management
Consider your employees needs. Tell them what the plan is, don't just leave them hanging. You are doing everything well IF your goal is multiple law suits. NO one likes the environment here - including the students. You took a great college and are working very hard at completely destroying it.

Advertised pay range is a hoax

Jun 12, 2021 - Research Analyst in Dallas, TX

        Pros
A pension if you work there for at least 10 years but it is a based on 80/20 rule.

        Cons
No work from home policy. No merit based raises. What you are hired at is what you will remain at with the exception of 2-3% cost of living increases every 2 or 3 years.. No opportunity to move up in a pay band as you gain more responsibility and experience. And look to reorganization to take that pay increase away.

        Advice to Management
I’ve worked for you for longer than 5 years. I have on my own developed my skills year over year AND have added value to my team and organization each year. I have never been rewarded with a merit based raise. In your wisdom, you take a third parties assessment, which was a very limited review of your staffs position and responsibilities, and redefine positions with only a name change. You then lower the pay band so you can potentially rehire the same staff at lower base. Ultimately, you simply want to take back the cost of living increases that we received through the years. I’m already underpaid. I hope you rehire new people who swindle you in the interview process and that have absolutely no ability to do what they say they can do. You will have wiped out a very talented department and team that actually gave you so much more than what you actually paid for. All you have accomplished is making more job opportunities for people who were in previous high positions, and reposted jobs with higher pay for the same individuals. These same people are the ones that are exceptional talkers but whom never accomplished a single thing over the years, yet, you rehired them. The ones who actually do the work will be leaving to seek employment that is actual in line with their experience. And in case you didn’t know, that’s about 40% higher than what you actually pay. Good luck; you’re gonna need it.

Stay away! DCCCD was a good place to work. Dallas College is not.
May 20, 2021 - Staff in Dallas, TX

        Pros
Faculty, staff, students, benefits. Chancellor Joe May is retiring early.

        Cons
Low pay is now even lower. No work life balance. Staff are being forced to reapply for their jobs. We are then offered lower ranking positions with lower pay. This is not due to poor job performance. Not everyone is rehired. Many good hard working people have lost their jobs for no reason. The survivors are left with more work and lower pay. Meanwhile, the administration is bloated and the College is handing millions of taxpayer dollars to Boston Consulting Group.

        Advice to Management
Cut half of the administration. Fire BCG. Stop congratulating yourselves on what a great job you are doing with the reorganization. Stop running the College like a for-profit.

Pros Used to be a great place but now like hell.

        Cons
Upper management are clueless and don't care. The restructuring has left morale low and no signs of improvement. The Chancellor who is retiring and the senior leadership are totally incompetent and have abdicated leadership to a consulting group that knows nothing. Millions of dollars of tax-payer dollars are being wasted and building a top-heavy administration with demoralized employees so reduced in number to make it unworkable.

        Advice to Management
Do the right thing and step-down. The board are asleep at the wheel too and should be voted out for letting this happen.

        Terrible place to work
May 15, 2021 - Senior Administrative Assistant in Dallas, TX

        Pros
Time off, the faculty and staff who work there.

        Cons
This used to be a great place to work until the district merged into one college. They have gotten rid if most lower level positions while at the same time elevating their own salaries. The institution is so top heavy now it’s unreal. The way they are cutting people is just sad. They are cutting people who have worked there for 20+ years who only had a few years left before they could retire. It’s so terrible to watch people being escorted out of the building by armed policemen. They have no heart. They keep saying how they understand how hard it is for those who lost their jobs but they are sitting there with their huge salaries. The provost actually got a huge raise while othe positions were being cut. The faculty are completely up in arms too. Some are being forced to go to multiple campus just to teach their load. Many other employees had to take large pay cuts just to keep a position. They have made everyone reapply for positions and then if you are lucky enough to get one you will most likely be relocated to a campus that is extremely long commute. The sad thing is, there was no need for them to eliminate so many positions because our positions were already budgeted for, as our salaries are paid for through state funding.

        Advice to Management
He needs to stop saying how he understands how we are feeling because he doesn’t. He has a job and he doesn’t have to lay his head down at night and wonder if he will have a job next week. Plus he is going around telling the press how all the employees are behind him because that is a lie. I haven’t spoken to a single person who is happy about the changes he making.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Dallas College Richland Campus has 24 ensembles listed. The enrollment is basically non-existent and drastically lower that it has ever been before. Many of these ensembles have never been offered before and the descriptions don't list what they actually are and who the instructor is. Only a fraction of these will make now that the top administrators have investigated the predatory advising, Melissa Logan has retired and Derrick Logozzo is no longer flying under the radar. If Logozzo has to follow degree plans and students are taking only 1 ensemble each fall spring semester for a total of the 4 that will transfer this program will completely collapse.

As Melissa Logan is now gone, the position should be eliminated and the vocal program disbanded. All vocal students should be sent to Brookhaven or Eastfield where they will have the finest choir directors and voice teachers available and they will get honest advising that will actually prepare them to transfer. Eastfield and Brokkhaven follow degree plans to the letter and the first two years of a real college program is completed in 2 years.... not the 3-5 year Logozzo special where one uses up their financial aid and has to pay out of state tuition upon transfer con that Richland has been running. Richland's choir room was gutted in the remodel and there are not near the practice rooms for the Richland Campus to host more than a few select programs.

The Richland string program and the real jazz under the adjuncts are incredible and the finest in the district. They should be retained. The wind symphony should be kept alive for the instrumental students that want to transfer with new leadership that will advise honestly and run a program that mirrors that of a 4 year college. Pre-college Music Theory that will not transfer (and uses up financial aid and leads to out of state tuition) should be eliminated. Freshman Theory (Theory I) serves the purpose of getting rid of the tire kickers who should not be majoring in music to begin with.

It is high time that this program get new leadership and built back up the right way!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

UTD's superb Dr. Jonathan Palant (formerly of Richland College) brings us a Grand Night for Singing at the Meyerson. The incredible Melinda Imthurn of Eastfield Campus and the Women's Chorus of Dallas will also be conducting.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

So, Fall registration started in April and the schedule is still a chaotic mess.
    Registration Dates

Summer and Fall term registration is underway now:

    • Monday, April 26: Regular registration began. Regular registration is open to all students.
    • Wednesday, Aug. 18: Last day to register for Fall (for 16-week classes and the first eight-week session)
      • Note: Registration for the second eight-week session continues until the class has met once.

Fusion Band. See course description and syllabus for more information.

Enrollment in this dishonestly run, predatory program has plummeted. Derrick Logozzo should not be advising and filling his own class chairs. Students that are majoring in jazz studies should be in one of the two 1123 ensembles listed below Logozzo's Jazz Ensemble. Those are the real jazz professors who can prepare jazz students to transfer. Those 1123 ensembles are still not listed as the jazz combos that they are. They should cap at 10 and make with 5 students. Those are the the classes where soloing and improvisation can really happen.

Steel Band will likely only transfer for percussion majors and they too are limited to 4 ensembles total, so they should be rotating through ensembles as their degree plans from the university dictate.

The multiple string sections should separate out community members from performance majors and education majors etc. according to skill level. Students should be taking only the 4 credits total (1 per semester) that will transfer and not be put into numerous excess credit hours that will use up their financial aid and put them in out of state tuition at Texas Universities. The course descriptions should specify what each section is designed for.

Education majors can transfer only 4 ensembles total and instrumentalists should likely be in the Wind Symphony unless the school they are transferring to will accept other ensemble credits.

The 1151 Vocal Ensemble has no instructor. Why is the retired Melissa Logan listed? She retired after running off the community members, alienating the alumnae and advising all her students into compete disaster. Vocal / choral students should be sent Eastfield and Brookhaven where there are well established programs with the finest faculty available and superb advising that follows the degree plans and gets students transferred seamlessly.

1152 with Logan says it is Jazz Singers and then erroneously requires students to sign up for pre-college level Music Theory 1303 that will not transfer, uses up financial aid and rockets students toward out of state tuition. That is not in fact Jazz Singers but yet another class that doesn't exist in the real world. That section is apparently the ear training portion for the Music Theory 1303 that is not college level and that no music major should ever be placed in. Why are students being lured in as music majors and put in dozens of classes that are not on any degree plan? With this criminal advising students use up their financial aid and end up in out of state tuition. Most alleged music majors never even manage to earn the Associate's in music.

1152 Brass Choir should not require any co-enrollments. Students should check the degree plan(s) of the college(s) they will be transferring to and take the 4 credits of ensemble (MUEN) based on that. Any additional ensembles must be taken with careful consideration.

1152 Audio Recording & Live Sound Seminar should not require pre-college level Music Theory as a co-requisite either. The instructor is fabulous and it would be a great intro class for anyone interested in music tech.

1152 Chamber Woodwinds/Chamber Percussion Ensemble formats is not just Deuby's class. Derrick Logozzo puts his percussion students in that section as well to meet separately in the band hall and it is often their 4th ensemble in a single semester. Percussion students as all other instruments and vocalists should have masterclasses for their instrument as part of their private lessons (MUAP) and not be paying or registering for a separate credit. This predatory advising into excess hours must stop. The woodwind ensembles are wonderful, but again students may only be able to transfer 4 large ensemble credits. Degree plans need to be followed and careful consideration given to any excess credit hours in light of financial aid and out of state tuition issues, not to mention many students change majors.

1153 Madrigal Singers is actually the jazz singers. Once again the course listing does not list jazz singers, so students self-registering and real advisors helping students register would have no way of knowing what the class really is. Music education majors normally can transfer only 4 credits of large ensembles. The Richland campus has no qualified vocal jazz professors that I am aware of, so any actual vocal jazz students really should be sent Brookhaven. Logan is long gone and the practice of putting students into excess hours will be ending so this class is not needed.

As usual the schedules are a complete mess and barely usable months after registration started in April. Why has the Dallas College administration not brought in qualified people who have the authority to combine the programs successfully and clarify the class listings so that they are usable? This mess is not acceptable on the taxpayers dime!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Dallas College can hardly be called one college. It is one huge disorganized mess. Look at the following class sections. 0-4 registrants means many of these classes will not make. Why are numerous sections of the same course offered at numerous campuses? Other programs are hosted at a single campus or just a few of the seven campuses.

Often students don't find out until classes have started that the class has in fact been cancelled. Classes being cancelled close to or after the semester has started leaves students with no chance to change their class schedules. Is it any wonder students can't finish degree programs and give up and leave? The now 1 music department needs serious attention.

Dallas College can hardly be called one college. It is one huge disorganized mess. Look at the following class sections. 0-4 registrants? Why are numerous sections of the same course offered at numerous campuses? Other specialized programs are hosted at a single campus or just a few of the seven campuses.

Richland College's Music Department was the feeder school into UNT and a vibrant program for years. Now, thanks to Derrick Logozzo's advising scandal, the program is completely DOA and the choir director has retired (bailed the Richland Titanic.)

Dozens of professors that will have no students in their lessons = ensembles that will not make. The students and taxpayers are getting a bloodbath with this poorly run chaotic mess of a program that is spread out all over the college campuses. Dallas College still has no organizational chart and there is no way to know who is in charge of anything.

The now 1 music department needs serious attention. This is not the one college we were promised.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

    From: Logozzo, Derrick <derricklogozzo@dcccd.edu>
    Date: 7/9/2021 1:36:31 PM
Subject: RLC Music Updates: July 9, 2021
    To: Logozzo, Derrick <derricklogozzo@dcccd.edu>
    RLC Music Students:

I hope that you are enjoying your summer. Here are some reminders:

    1. Retirement of Professor Melissa Logan: We are sad to lose her but happy for Professor, Melissa Logan, our outgoing Director of Choral Music who is retiring this summer. We hope the best for her and her family as she has been absolutely tremendous here at Richland in her work teaching and directing choirs, music theory, and music appreciation courses, and advising choral students. Her choirs always sounded terrific and her work was extremely energetic and positive for all around her. She is leaving a lasting legacy and will be missed incredibly. Congratulations to her on her retirement.

    1. Fall Term Semester Planning appointments: *** Fall music registration is open.

Courses are corrected in the online schedule.
Instrumentalists and Vocalists: contact Derrick Logozzo for semester discussion appointments:
    derricklogozzo@dcccd.edu, 972.238.6254
Returning students will notice that course times have been altered somewhat because many courses are now offered on a 4-day week basis with only select courses having any outside Friday or Saturday meetings.
See the following for the Fall schedule: eConnect - Credit Class Schedule

    1. Choral Students: At this time, we are active in pursuit of the individual(s) teaching choral music at Richland in the Fall. Discussions and developments will continue. Commitment to excellence will remain. Updates to come.

    Sincerely,
Derrick Logozzo, MM. Perf., BM. Mus. Ed.

Melissa Logan gone sounds like retired in lieu of getting fired. Her student and their parents in this record posted below thought they were well on their way to a music degree. But, Logan and Logozzo just used their trusting students as chair fillers for their total mess of a program. This is unforgivable! Financial aid totally wasted and out of state tuition at Texas Universities has ended so many academic careers and left students in the same dead end, entry level jobs they have worked since high school.

Melissa Logan also ran off the community members, totally alienated and offended the alumnae (once a Thunderduck always a Thunderduck was a lie!) This email is dated July 9th with Logozzo going on about Logan takes the cake. Two weeks later the choral director job for Dallas College Richland Campus is not listed anywhere.

Faculty and Teaching – Jobs – Dallas College

Why is a public college funded by tax dollars secretly hiring? Why is this job not posted publicly as all the other Dallas College jobs are so that all qualified candidates may apply? This is more good old boy, dirty under the table dealing.

The position of choral director at the Richland Campus should be eliminated and the vocal program disbanded. Richland's choir room was gutted in the remodel and there are not near the practice rooms for the Richland Campus to host more than a few select programs.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

    https://reportcenter.highered.texas.gov/agency-publication/miscellaneous/standards-for-academic-associate-degree-programs/

Standards for Academic Associate Degree Programs

A community college, technical school, or state college (“institution”) shall adhere to the following standards and to Coordinating Board rules, Section 9.184, “Criteria for New Academic Associate Degree Programs and Steps for Implementation,” in developing new academic associate degree
programs. An institution is expected to incorporate these standards into its new and existing programs unless it provides information that justifies deviation from the standards. (For criteria applicable to Applied Associate Degree programs, see the Guidelines for Instructional Programs in Workforce
    Education.)

    I. Need

    Academic Need
The institution has identified specific baccalaureate degree programs that the associate degree would lead into. Institutions should rely on data from four-year schools showing demand for particular programs and/or information demonstrating the emergence of a new discipline to support the transfer of programs.

    Potential Student Demand
The institution has researched and documented recent and reliable data reflecting short- and long- term evidence of student interest.
(Types of data to be used are: (a) increased enrollments in related programs at the institution, (b) high enrollment in similar programs at other institutions, and (c) student surveys.)

    Enrollment Projections
The institution has calculated enrollment projections that reflect student demand estimates sufficient to ensure financial stability of the program by the end of the program’s fifth year. In calculating yearly FTSE, 30 SCH equals one FTSE for associate degree programs. New programs will be developed in accordance with the institution’s Uniform Recruitment and Retention Strategy.

    II. Quality

    Types of Degrees

An academic associate degree is an Associate of Arts (AA) degree, an Associate of Science (AS) degree, or an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degree. The academic associate degree forms the foundation of and prerequisites for transfer into a baccalaureate program and, to the extent possible, is aligned with the upper-division requirements of the baccalaureate program at specific four-year institutions to facilitate a seamless transition with minimal loss of credit earned.

Number of Semester Credit Hours in a Degree Program
The institution shall take into account Texas Education Code § 61.0515 regarding limitations on the number of semester credit hours (SCH) required for a baccalaureate degree and shall not require an excessive number of lower-division SCH for the completion of an associate’s degree. Currently the limit for baccalaureate degrees is a maximum of 120 SCH unless the institution of higher education approved to offer the degree program has determined that there is a compelling
academic need to require a larger number of SCH for completion of the degree requirements. An academic associate degree program is limited to 60
SCH. If the number of SCH required to
complete a proposed associate degree program exceeds 60, the institution must provide
detailed written documentation describing the compelling academic reason(s) for exceeding
the 60 SCH limit. Acceptable reasons may include, but are not limited to, programmatic
accreditation requirements, statutory requirements, or licensure/certification requirements.
The number of SCH for the degree shall be comparable to the number of SCH required for
    similar degrees in the state

    Curriculum
    Required Courses
Required courses are those taken by all students in the program. These courses shall reflect the
lower-division prerequisite courses required for a student to enroll in upper-division courses
upon transfer to a baccalaureate program, if the student has completed the appropriate
associate degree. Required prerequisite courses should provide the framework for an academic
associate degree and should align precisely with lower-division requirements within a specific bachelor’s degree program. Required courses should meet all lower-division requirements for accreditation, licensure, or certification and shall be consistent with similar programs in the state
    and nation.

    Standards of Academic Associate Degrees

    Core curriculum
Academic associate degrees shall include the institution’s approved core curriculum. Exceptions will
be made where a portion of the college's approved core curriculum may be included if the coursework for both the completed core curriculum and a Board-approved field of study curriculum, a statewide
voluntary transfer compact, or an institution-to-institution articulation agreement would cause the
total requirements for the associate degree to exceed 60 SCH.

Prescribed and/or Free Electives Electives, if available, are consistent with those of similar programs and are selected by the student, subject to advisor approval.

Music department gets NASM accreditation — Richland Student Media

Ultimately, Logozzo said that Richland College “will have a bigger voice at the state level with our degree plans and going down to Austin and talking with any kind of congressional representatives because we have an accreditation that backs up what we are doing here on a daily basis.
Derrick Logozzo is completely delusional. He never had and never will have any voice in degree plans while at a 2 year college that offers only a transfer preparatory program. The music degree from Richland (now Dallas College) is only a means of acquiring credits to transfer for students that are seeking a Bachelor's Degree in Education or Music Performance. The only thing to be considered is the degree requirements of schools that accept Richland students in transfer. The universities set the degree plans period.

The Dallas College FOS (Field of Study) in music degree is 60 credit hours and should be followed to the letter. The four credits of recital should be 0 credit and required as part of full-time study. 4 credits of piano class as advisable. Everything else that is not on the degree plan is excess hours that eat up financial aid and exhaust the 150 hours of in state tuition (a degree 120 hours + 30 credit hours = students being charged out of state tuition at Texas Universities which financial aid doesn't cover.)

Cedar Valley is the only campus with terminating degrees that lead directly to employment.

Melissa Logan is retiring. Derrick Logozzo should have been terminated years ago. His 100-161 credit hour chair filling bonanza where everyone who walks in the door gets pushed into majoring in music has been disastrous. Armies of students have exhausted their financial aid with music nonsense and are years later stuck in the entry-level, dead end jobs they started in high school.

And, I have it on good authority that despite what the incompetent Richland Media (that writes little more than lie-filled fluff stories to advertise for the college) says, the Richland Campus has not gone through the process again to be NASM accredited again. That is pure fantasy. Time to disband the media at this campus as well. And, the administration told me they did not plan seek NASM accreditation again. Why isn't Richland Student Media covering the advising scandal and loss of accreditation?
    Feb 5, 2021, 9:56 AM

Richland Student Media sent February 5

Not true. They had to go through the process again due to the Dallas College transition. All is well.
Seeing approximately 5 students per year that transferred from Richland go on to complete a Bachelor's while hundreds walk away with no degree of any kind tells the whole story. The program is not getting students marketable job skills either.

The Richland Campus has the most incredible professors with the credentials and experience to equal that of those teaching at the most prestigious universities in the state, but the predatory advising and gross mismanagement has sunk this program like the Titanic and harmed the students who have been lured in.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

More proof that the story of Pinocchio is not true. The Dallas College Richland Campus Spring Finale Concert, like all the rest, had virtually no audience. Now, months later this concert that featured all the instrumental groups and soloists from Melissa Logan's collapsing choral program has garnered only 83 views including my numerous views to take detailed notes.

Derrick Logozzo bragged about his students' various awards. Alex McConville was awarded the Alice Jones Berding Award in Music, a one-time $500 award. Juan Botero received a $30,000 renewable scholarship to the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston. "Reni Acosta, Paola Godinez, several other vocalists and over 10 other instrumentalists" were said to have been "offered similar awards for the next year to multiple universities all over the nation through a strenuous audition process."

The facts are that 3 other students also got the $500 dollar one-time award. Of the 400-600 music enrollments that Derrick Logozzo claims, usually about a dozen graduate each spring and a few more give up and transfer loaded down with dozens of excess hours. Of those that transfer many never complete a Bachelor's Degree. Around 5 or so per year have earned a Bachelor's Degree in recent years.

I highly doubt that all these mysteriously unnamed students received "similar awards" to that $30,000 renewable Berklee scholarsip. Some years a standout student will get a full-ride or nice package like Juan Botero got. We actually have the 4 students total that got the Berding award (a one-time $500 award) and then a few more got likely small scholarships at places like UTA and Midwestern State.

I demand Derrick substantiate these wild claims in writing! Scholarship amounts and their recipients are not usually secret. Let's have the facts! Enough of the gross exaggerations and outright lies! Suggesting that numerous students got renewable scholarships to the tune of $30,000 is fraud and luring students in like this is actionable!

He also bragged of the 20 performing groups folks will get to hear this fall. Only 8 groups made in the spring of 2021 and some those groups are in jeopardy of not making at this fall. Some of the 18 MUEN listed are not even performing ensembles.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Registration ends in 3 weeks. So, any returning student who hasn't registered by now is flirting with disaster.
Derrick Logozzo emailed out in desperation during the summer
    Friday May 21st:
We have just been notified that any music courses for Summer 1 (June 3 start) with zero enrollments will get cancelled from the system on this coming Monday, May 24.

Please get enrolled as soon as possible before Monday to avoid being closed out of any needed Summer 1 music courses such as lessons.
    June 21st:
Be sure to have your Summer 2 enrollments in place by this Friday, June 25 in Econnect as courses with zero enrollments in the current Summer 2 schedule will begin to be deleted.
Summer and Fall term registration is underway now:Monday, April 26: Regular registration began. Regular registration is open to all students.

      • Note: For Summer classes, you can register until the day before the class starts.

    • Wednesday, Aug. 18: Last day to register for Fall (for 16-week classes and the first eight-week session)
So, about ten days before registration ended Dallas College dumped classes with zero or few enrollments right off of their total mess of a schedule. The disastrous end is coming. As of today in the MUAP (private lessons) here are the numbers of students registered:
    1000 level (half hour / 1 credit) 2000 level (hour / 2 credit)

    Violin 1 1

    Viola 1 1

    Cello 0 2

The catastrophic collapse continues. Enrollment in this predatory program has plummeted. When are we going to get honest advising that follows degree plans? When are we going to have the great ensembles set up as the combos and small bands they should be so that they will make and the jazz and fusion students can get the instruction they need?

Derrick Logozzo and his sidekick Melissa Logan were only able to get 4 students into the pre-college level theory (not on a music degree, but does eat up financial aid hours and rocket students toward out of state tuition at Texas Universities.) Music Theory 1 has a whopping 7 students. The program is completely imploding.

If Logozzo is forced to do what the administration ordered semesters ago and follow degree plans putting students in a single ensemble (MUEN) and a single private lesson (MUAP) for 4 regular (fall/spring) semesters only, no ensemble is going to have enough musicians to do anything. Not to mention civilized community members have been run out of the choir and aren't comfortable in instrumental ensembles with students that constantly skip and walk in late. Predatory advising has sunk this Titanic!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

So much for Derrick Logozzo's claims of 400-600 music enrollments. He has always claimed that when trying to hire unsuspecting adjuncts. Then they found out that in reality they would have few. Now, many professors will find that they have few if any students at all!

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

    Recording Arts/Music Technology

The Recording Arts and Music Technology area of Richland's Music program is an intensive program of study designed to teach the developing musician various technological and business skills that prepare transfer-track students for upper-level bachelor’s degree work.
Interested students also become prepared quickly to begin entry-level work in the music industry right after associate degree training at Richland. Using various software platforms in recording and audio engineering, developing press kits and websites, learning about music careers and becoming a live sound engineer are all skills acquired in our program.
Richland’s approach to Recording Arts involves a student becoming a solid musician first and using music technology in an artistic manner to provide the most career options in one’s future. Recording Arts courses are taken through the Continuing Education Music Industry Series, which allows the Richland student musician to complete the associate degree in Music and these certificate-style courses simultaneously without abbreviation to essential musical training.

The Richland Recording Arts equipment collection includes:

    • A Solid State Logic AWS 924 Delta recording console
    • Full variety of recording microphones
    • Four Live Sound rigs
    • Recording Lab with three synthesizer workstations and full rhythm section instrumentation
    • Recording Arts classroom with 16 workstations, including Apple iMac computers and Pro Tools software
Derrick Logozzo's fraudulent, lie-filled solicitation continues. Students will not get courses as there hasn't been a series for years. Students will not be able to become a live sound engineer. Students will not get any kind of certificate. There is no transfer track for recording arts and music technology at Richland. There are no music business classes. Those careers have certificates and degrees available only at the Cedar Valley Campus.

Students in MUEN 1152 must be co-enrolled in MUSI 1303 at Richland. Audio Recording & Live Sound Seminar for various levels of experience.

This is the only class that has been offered in years. It will never make. But, if it did it is nothing more than an introductory class for those like me that are just wanting an overview. Derrick Logozzo's stories to students about double majors and getting fantastic jobs in music are mostly fantasy and the administrators I am talking to don't sound amused by the ongoing problems that are only in the Richland Music Department.

I just got a very interesting phone call from a new administrator over Logozzo in this new structure. Richland (with predatory advisors Derrick Logozzo and Melissa Logan filling their own chairs) is the only campus that hasn't been following degree plans. There have been no such issues at the other campuses. And, he assured me that Logozzo was no longer an administrator and has no authority.

re: Kilgore College Hires Derrick Logozzo (Dallas College / DCCCD Richland Music Advisor Out of State Tuition Scam)

Derrick Logozzo is plastering the walls of the deserted Dallas College Richland Campus with the following:

Derrick Logozzo who is no longer an administrator and that has no authority to do much of anything is now the Richland Campus Lone Ranger. Melissa Logan bailed this predatory Titanic.

Voice masterclasses are supposed to be built in the voice studio lessons and are not a separate credit class and are not billed as an extra credit at real schools. The voice classes are actually for non-music majors. All that voice classes do is eat up financial aid and rocket students toward out of state tuition with no financial aid.

    MUSI 1183 (1 Credit Hours)

    Voice Class I

This is a Texas Common Course Number.

Course Description: This course is for non-voice majors. It presents the principles of breathing, voice production, tone control, enunciation, and phrasing in two group lessons a week. This course may be repeated for credit. (2 Lab.)

Coordinating Board Academic Approval Number 5009085126

Derrick Logozzo continually brags of 20 ensembles. We have seen that nowhere near that many are offered and only about half of those offered will even make. The numbers in that previous post are virtually unchanged.

Many of those ensembles have 0 / zero enrolled so why is Logozzo putting all of these ensembles on the schedule? The groups are not going to make as Derrick loads his ensembles and does not put the jazz students into Fusion, Improv and the combos that they should be in.

The concerts have had almost no attendance as I have noted on this thread for several years. Online viewership is also abysmal. Why is Dallas College not combining programs and bringing in leadership that will advise honestly, encourage community participation and build the program the right way?
