PHOENIX -- Robbers often cover their faces with nylons to hide their identities. Some wear ball caps and sunglasses, even ski masks.
But in Phoenix, a man's attempt to retain his anonymity during a robbery was a suffocating experience when he nearly choked on a plastic grocery bag he placed over his head, police said.
"What we have is a 20- to 25-year-old Hispanic male, about 5 feet, 10 inches, 180 pounds, wearing khaki pants, dark shirt and a plastic bag covering his face," said Phoenix Police Silent Witness Sgt. Darren Burch.
The man walked into a Circle K store at 75th Avenue and Thomas last week, where he told the clerk he had a gun, police said.
"He has difficulty breathing, he rips the bag open, we see his face very clearly," Burch said, referring to images captured on the store's video camera.
The man nearly suffocated himself with his own disguise, police said, but even after ripping the bag from his face, he maintained he had a gun, continued with the robbery and got away with the cash.
"You would think he would learn, but it's pretty stupid in the first place, so maybe not," Burch said.

TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa Police arrested a 41-year-old Tulsa man on drug and destruction of evidence complaints after he stuck a glass crack pipe in his mouth and started eating it.
Police officers were called to the QuikTrip in the 500 block of North Sheridan Sunday afternoon on a report of a man selling drugs in the parking lot.
Officers arrested Eljuan Heath inside the store after he was spotted trying to conceal a can of beer.
After he was arrested, Tulsa Police found he was wearing an ankle monitor from a previous drug charge.
He was also booked into the Tulsa County jail for petty larceny and resisting arrest.
