What's happened to the 'like' function on the forum posts then?

Have management got rid of it? Is it a bug?

I just went to 'like' a post and nada - nuffin' there?

:RpS_confused:

I hope y'all are having a good weekend

We've had to disable then re enable all of the plugins in an effort to track down the reason for some members IP ranges being banned.

For some strange reason, when the plugin which handles the "like" function was restarted, the "likes" disappeared.

As in: disappeared entirely, not just switched off in the plugin control panel.

So the guys are checking into why it happened, when they are able.

HOWEVER

That particular plugin has reached the end of its' useful life anyway, which will require us to purchase a new plugin from a new company, the old supplier having ceased updating the software

The new plugin, while it allows a seamless conversion, doesn't have the "like" function as an option

So, no matter the outcome of resolving the current problem, "like" will eventually disappear, sooner, rather than later.

I am pouting too as that means no easy share feature. Now, to pass posts along we must cut and paste to tweet them. :pulling_hair_out:

Several shut downs, repairing the database and restarting the vBSEO plugins again got the like / share button back.... But, as LRM said, when we replace that old software we may not get a like / share button in the new software. :crying_2:

As long as they don't take my wiggle pictures we'll be fine.

The story that goes with the particular plugin needing to be replaced is worthy of being the subplot of a TV soap opera

Shell out for forum software and plugins and live happily ever after.

Yeah, right

Woohoo, the like function is back again!

But for how long........?

How much does said software / plug-ins cost anyway, Roundy? If it's not too extortionate, I'm sure a few of us regs wouldn't mind chipping in a lil' sum' sumthin' to help keep **** running?

I'd happily donate a few dollars a month. ****, the entertainment value ALONE is worth it

HeHe, it's not the cost that's the problem.

It's the loss of functions such as the "like" and "share" features (among others) we're trying to avoid as long as possible.

Seeing what happened when "like" wasn't working for a few hours, I shudder to think what would happen if it was lost permanently :-)

Members would likely vote us out and put stacy in charge or something equally spiteful.

Now how can one not LIKE this post, eh?

Not least because you smiled and that's a rare thing to see indeed :RpS_wink:

And I wouldn't put stacey in charge of sweeping the virtual washroom floors of this place.

I sincerely hope that priority is given to the approximately 100 members including myself who are IP banned and have to use an annoying, slow free surf proxy in order to even view the site over saving the like button....

The other 100 or so banned members have been stuck in the "too hard basket" for way too long.....On the upside at least I have company on the scrap heap...

Please understand that when we unbanned IPs to try and solve that problem, that allowed a flood of spammers. Some posters go through more than 1 IP. We will get with anyone having issues and do some trace routes to get to the bottom of this. Remember, I have worked with law enforcement and IPs is an issue we have dealt with, so I know what a nightmare this is and will not say more as I don't want to give the spammers any info.

Any idea when this process will begin??.....This year??.....The other 100 or so banned members have been sitting in the too hard basket for weeks/months waiting for something to be done.....

Come on, okosh, there's no need to get snarky, you're better than that.

Whatever has happened is not "supposed" to have happened and none of us can find the problem to solve it, despite spending an inordinate amount of time on the problem, just because its' happening to a long term valued members.

Believe me, it would be a lot simpler to simply delete your name and not have to put up with sly digs here and elsewhere, but that is simply not what's happening.

Before anyone jumps down our (my) throat, we first became aware of this problem several weeks ago.

How did we become aware ???

It happened to me.

I was excluded from the forum in the same way and with the same message as others have been receiving.

Not once, not twice, but four times over a period of several days.

The problem righted itself, then happened again, and again and again.

So, there's no question what's happening is due to negligence or deliberately targeting certain members.

I second the whole 'no need for snarkiness' motive.

We're a forum that's run by volunteers - we do not receive any compensation for our time/effort put into this site.

I once spent a whole week fighting off DDoS attack (date in below image) for RealScam - building servers with vanilla proxy, redirects and IPTables; utilising and configuring numerous CDNs and security systems.

I can't speak for anyone else here but I'm out at work for 12 hours out of my day. Then I get home and spend what time I have with my young family.

When I do get chance to try and deal with the more complex issues with the forum the whole admin team seems to be unappreciated and accused of being 'in on it'.

Hey I'm not asking for a salary to help the site keep running - Hell, if I were there're more deserving admins than myself - I'm asking for a little patience and support.

Thanks

part of the misinderstanding seems to be that unless it happened to a person, no one knew of this issue. I know I didn't have the slightest clue what was going on with okosh or LRM - not that I needed to know.

I had no clue, unless it was that thing a while back where when we went to log in we got notices that it was a malicious site, but I think that was a different issue.
Oh, well, hope you can solve it and keep the like functionality, but if not thanks anyway.

I wondered if there was a problem with the friends button. I sent some invites and got no reply, then I noticed that "ribshaw" was no longer on my friends list so I sent him a new invite and got no reply.

If you could send me a new invite "ribshaw" I will see if I get it and we can determine if the fault is my end or your end. I tried sending some others so iif anybosy else would like to try and send me one, I will see if it can be sorted.

Snarky was IMHO a controlled and reasonable response considering how this has been handled since I first sent message of my home IP being banned end of September.....

Last night Jason changed something and hopefully my problem will remain fixed....

I got that a week or so back and said yes.
