I was going to post a clip of Nicko McBrain - one of the most highly regarded drummers around. Unfortunately I got sidetracked rewatching the full 1.5 hour documentary on Iron Maidens formative years, which is quite interesting if you're into that sort of thing. I'm extremely biased, but there is no other band that compares to them for professionalism and dedication to their fans! Sit back and watch, its a great story of a band making it big through persistence and hard work... The bit about Nicko starts at the 1:17 mark (he's a funny bugger too).

Oh..Nicko..the nitro top drummer..who has not heard for this fenomenal musician...the only reason I did not mention him and some others is that I have left this heavy duty rock scene for a while. This state-of.the-art drummer can do with his right leg what others do only with double bas...I would dear to compare Nicko with John Bonham - Bonzo - a true King of ALL drummers (my opinion).Led Zeppelin was and still is the band I always listen with joy...no need to say how sad I was hearing that Bonzo died and was only 32...Led Zeppelin was never the same band after he was gone..really sad story...but here Nicko and his outrageous drumming.

I've been out of that scene for a long time too Mundorf, but made sure I got tickets to Maiden on the Australian leg of the Flight 666 tour in '09 and it was well worth it.
Steve Harris is a musical genius, their music just does not age. The most successful band in the world never to be played on radio!!

Nicko is well deserving of the nickname 'Octopus'. His predecessor Clive Burr was no slouch either, sad to hear he passed away a couple of months ago from MS.
John Bonham will always be at the top of the Great Drummers pyramid. Crazy man Keith Moon could have been way up there too, if the drugs and alcohol hadn't killed him.

so true..and..when speaking about rock...the brilliant Ian Paice - one of a very few hard rock drummer using jazz elements in his drumming..personally I started to practice drums 1974 under the influence of this great performer..oh yes..and Ginger Baker, mentioned by LRM - went in Africa and lived there just to learn some very authentical rhytms...amazing..in fact there are so many great guys like Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich..you could list them for ages....after that I was more dedicated to samba, rumba, bosa nova with rock-jazz elements

I have been playing for some 20 years in many bands and different places and countries but then had car crash after which was unable to move hands like before...with few surgical implants this was just not possible any more but from time to time I do play with my friends slow blues or similar staff just for fun...you know...is nice feeling to be present on the stage in a way..however organized advents I do not dare to perform

Sorry about your accident Mundorf but glad you can still play some. One of my sons has been playing drums since he was a child. I think he started on an toy Indian drum, which he took apart to see what made it work! lol I got him a children's set of drums when he was 11 and then a full set of Roger's when he was in highschool. He & my other son (who plays any instrument) had a band from their teenage years through college when they all went separate ways. They both still play and now my granddaughter can play most all instruments and she also sings. I am blessed with talented children but never got the training myself.

That's great..sure you are...it's not only the music that matters but you learn tremendous important thing...you get work habits, even more important you learn discipline and to choose the priorities,to sacrifice something for something...and this beautiful feeling of being able to implement the knowledge for both - joy and benefit...and you see..you wrote the essence...to start with toy - Indian drum and to develope the whole thing in something big...big...big..no metter how big..it's always big - pure joy and peace. Thanks for your kind words,Scratchycat.

And now some real soul music with brilliant Joss Stone and brilliant song THE HIGH ROAD

http://youtu.be/K0SnOpT6R8g

Go down to wait all night, she's bound to run amok
Invested enough in it anyhow to each his own
The garden is so dim now, she curls her lips on a bar
I don't know if you're dead or not, if you're anyone

Come on and get the minimum before you open up your eyes

This army has so many hands to analyze

Come on and get your overdose collected at the borderlines

They want to get up in your hair

'Cause they know and so do I

The high road is hard to find

A detour in your new life

Tell all of your friends goodbye

The dawn to end all nights, that's all we hoped it was

A break from the warfare in your house, to each his own

The soldier is bailing out and curled his lips on a bar

And I don't know if the dead can talk to anyone

Come on and get the minimum before you open up your eyes

This army has so many hands, are you one of us?

Come on and get your overdose collected at the borderlines

They want to get up in your hair

'Cause they know and so do I

The high road is hard to find

A detour in your new life

Tell all of your friends goodbye

She has a lot of good stuff on Utbue and tours worldwide in a lot of smaller venues. Just a short plane, train, or auto from you just last month. That's me, always too late with the details.
