Cyber crime costs NZ $488m
AAP,
The West Australian June 11, 2012

Cyber crime is estimated to have cost New Zealand about $NZ625 million ($A488.30 million) last year and has the potential to impact on critical infrastructure and the economy, the government says.

Communications Minister Amy Adams on Monday launched Cyber Security Awareness Week designed to raise awareness about the risks and ways to protect personal, financial and business information online.

The launch coincides with Australia's Cyber Security Awareness Week.

"More than 2000 New Zealanders are affected by cyber crime every day in the form of computer viruses and malware, credit card fraud, online scams, phishing and identity theft," Ms Adams said.

"It's important we make sure New Zealanders are aware of what the dangers are and that they take the right precautions."

She says basic things people can do include having a good anti-virus program; using proper password protection; ensuring important data is backed up and using secure wireless connections.
